The best cat dewormer depends on which parasite needs treatment: no single product in this U.S.-focused comparison covers every worm in the same way. For direct treatment across several named worm types, Drontal Feline Tablets and Profender are the broad-coverage options here; Revolution and Revolution Plus pair selected worm indications with monthly parasite control, while Droncit is a narrower tapeworm option. A veterinarian can help identify the parasite and match it to a cat-labeled product.
How to choose among cat dewormers
Compare products by the parasites named in their labeling, whether the claim is treatment or prevention, route, and access requirements. “Dewormer” is not a blanket promise to treat all worms. The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) lists parasite-specific products and guidance for feline roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms in its product guide, ascarid guidance, and hookworm guidance.
The five options below are not interchangeable. Some are intended to treat existing infections; monthly parasite-control products have specific labeled worm indications, and Revolution Plus’s tapeworm claim is prevention through killing flea vectors, not direct treatment of an existing tapeworm infection.
Five cat dewormer options
| Product | Form and role | Worm coverage supported by cited source | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drontal Feline Tablets | Oral tablets; direct treatment option | CAPC lists activity against *Ancylostoma tubaeforme* hookworm, *Toxocara cati* roundworm, and *Dipylidium caninum* and *Taenia taeniaeformis* tapeworms. | Use the cat-labeled product; do not substitute a similarly named dog product. Source: CAPC product guide. |
| Profender topical solution for cats | Topical solution; veterinarian-directed treatment option | FDA’s approval summary supports specified feline hookworm, roundworm, and tapeworm infections when used according to the label. | Restricted to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. Source: FDA approval summary. |
| Revolution (selamectin) | Monthly topical parasite-control product | FDA labeling supports treatment and control of feline roundworm and intestinal hookworm infections. | The cited label does not support a tapeworm-treatment claim. Source: FDA label. |
| Revolution Plus | Monthly parasite-control product | FDA’s November 13, 2024 supplemental approval summary includes roundworm and intestinal hookworm treatment/control, plus prevention of *Dipylidium caninum* infection as a direct result of killing flea vectors. | Tapeworm prevention through flea-vector control is not direct treatment of an existing infestation. The cited summary specifies cats and kittens at least 8 weeks old and weighing at least 2.8 pounds. Source: FDA supplemental approval summary. |
| Droncit feline tablets | Oral praziquantel tablets; parasite-specific option | CAPC identifies it as a tapeworm product. | A narrower option than the products listed for multiple worm groups; confirm the current label and veterinary advice. Source: CAPC product guide. |
Best fit by situation
- Several worm types need consideration: Drontal Feline Tablets offer the clearest oral comparison across the named hookworm, roundworm, and tapeworm species in CAPC’s guide. Profender is a topical, veterinarian-directed option whose FDA approval summary supports specified infections across those groups.
- Monthly topical control is also a goal: Revolution has labeled roundworm and intestinal hookworm indications. Revolution Plus adds prevention of *Dipylidium caninum* through flea-vector killing, not treatment of an established tapeworm infection.
- Tapeworm-specific choice: Droncit is listed by CAPC for tapeworms. A veterinarian can determine whether a narrower product or broader parasite control is appropriate.
Why diagnosis matters before treatment
Worms do not all respond to the same product, and symptoms alone may not identify the parasite. CAPC recommends testing cats for hookworms with fecal flotation using centrifugation. It notes that antigen or PCR testing can help identify infections in some circumstances, including low egg counts or infections involving young or single-sex worms. If infection is suspected, ask a veterinarian about testing and a cat-labeled treatment rather than selecting a product from symptoms alone. CAPC also recommends year-round broad-spectrum control with efficacy against hookworms.

Choosing a dewormer for a kitten
Kitten treatment depends on age, weight, parasite risk, and the exact product label. CAPC’s ascarid guidance says kittens should routinely be treated with pyrantel pamoate beginning at 2 weeks because of hookworm concerns, followed by an appropriate monthly preventive with efficacy against *Toxocara cati*. This is population-level guidance, not an individual product or dosing instruction. Ask a veterinarian which product and schedule fit the kitten; do not assume that a minimum age or weight for one product applies to another.
Safety and product-label checks
- Confirm that the package is specifically labeled for cats and covers the suspected parasite. Similar product names do not make dog and cat formulations interchangeable.
- Check the current label for the cat’s age and weight, directions, and any restrictions; use the product only as directed by its label and veterinarian.
- Distinguish direct treatment of an existing infection from ongoing prevention. In particular, Revolution Plus’s *Dipylidium* claim follows flea-vector killing and should not be presented as direct tapeworm treatment.
- Ask a veterinarian about diagnosis and an appropriate product when infection is suspected, when the cat is a kitten, or when the product is veterinarian-restricted.
The FDA notes that approved praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate formulations are available for cats and dogs and discusses veterinarian-directed extralabel use in its compounding information. That is not a recommendation to compound a dewormer or use a product off-label yourself; follow veterinary direction.
