These five stories, published by Best Friends Animal Society in 2021, show different ways animals found safety and a place to belong: rescue groups transported cats across state lines, a community cat recovered into an indoor home, and an adopted cat took on a welcoming role at a library. They are individual stories, not a measure of network-wide outcomes.
How five animals found a fresh start
North Carolina cats traveled to new homes
Burke County Animal Services in Morganton, North Carolina, had more cats needing homes than the community could accommodate. A Best Friends transport volunteer and Bissell Pet Foundation helped coordinate placements with organizations in New York, Michigan, and Kentucky. Best Friends reported that more than 150 cats were transferred. The effort also began a collaboration involving Burke County Animal Services and other agencies. Best Friends Animal Society’s 2021 story presents the transfer as one example of groups working together to move animals where they could be placed.

Corona recovered from a serious injury
Corona was a friendly, ear-tipped cat living outdoors in California when she suffered a life-threatening injury. A good Samaritan named David brought her to Stanislaus Animal Services Agency. After veterinarians amputated her injured leg, David took her home to live indoors. Her story is a reminder that an outdoor cat’s circumstances can change when someone steps in and offers a safe home.
Brownie’s shelter stay ended with a celebration
Staff at Gwinnett County Animal Shelter realized that Brownie, a Lab mix, had been there for a year. They marked the occasion with a party that included play, tennis balls, and cake. The 2021 article reports that Brownie then found a new home.

Georgia cared for orphaned kittens
Georgia arrived at Sunshine Dog Rescue in Phoenix sick, homeless, and pregnant. After she lost her puppies, she bonded with two orphaned kittens. The article reports that Georgia and the kittens were happy, healthy, safe, and with new families.
Page Turner became a library regular
Adopted from the Humane Society of Elkhart County, Page Turner, a gray cat, took on duties at Bristol Public Library in Indiana. Best Friends described those duties as “human supervision and therapeutic naps.” Some visitors came specifically to see her, giving the cat a public role that brought people through the library’s doors.
What these stories show about community support
Each animal’s route to a better outcome was different: coordinated transport for cats who needed placement, an indoor home for an injured community cat, a celebration that drew attention to a long-term shelter resident, foster-like bonding between a dog and orphaned kittens, and a welcoming role for an adopted cat. Together, the anecdotes illustrate how people and organizations can respond to individual animals’ needs; they do not establish a general success rate for rescue programs.
