Each finding has a different scope and limitation, so none should be read as a universal promise or a diagnostic tool.
Can dog-assisted therapy help children with autism?
It may be a useful complement for some children, but the available trial did not show that dog-assisted therapy (DAT) outperformed conventional curriculum training. In a Hong Kong exploratory randomized controlled trial published in 2026, 64 children aged 6–15 were assigned either to an eight-session DAT program or to conventional school curriculum training. The study ran from February 2023 to November 2024. The trial report found statistically significant pre-to-post improvements in some quality-of-life and psychosocial measures within the DAT group, including total difficulties. However, changes between the two groups were not statistically significantly different.

That distinction matters: improvement within one group does not establish that the intervention caused more improvement than the comparison program. The authors describe DAT as a potential supplemental therapy alongside conventional curriculum training, not a replacement for it.
What the trial can—and cannot—tell families
- The program was structured and delivered with an experienced special-education teacher and a trained dog handler; results should not be assumed to transfer unchanged to every school or therapy setting.
- Children with animal allergies, fear, or aversion were excluded. The findings therefore do not establish suitability for children with those circumstances.
- The trial is exploratory. It supports further consideration of a complementary approach, not a claim that DAT is more effective than standard education or therapy.
Does playing with a dog affect brain activity?
A 2026 report describes EEG measurements from 30 adults as they completed eight types of interaction with dogs, each lasting three minutes. Play and walking were associated with increased alpha-band oscillations; grooming and massage were associated with increased beta-band oscillations. The report on the study relates alpha activity to relaxed wakefulness and beta activity to attention, but the measured result is a change in brain-wave activity during brief activities—not proof of a lasting benefit.

Because the sample was small and each interaction short, the findings do not establish that dog play improves memory, relieves stress, treats a condition, or produces the same response for everyone. They also do not identify a particular toy or activity as therapeutic. Shared play can still be an enjoyable way to spend time with a dog; the EEG result is not a reason to promise a brain boost.
Can a cat’s meow or purr identify that individual cat?
Cat vocalizations carry acoustic information that can help distinguish individuals in analyzed samples, but they are not a simple dictionary of what a cat wants. A 2026 Scientific Reports analysis examined 276 meows from 14 cats and 557 purrs from 21 cats. It found individual information in both call types, with purrs showing stronger individual-classification performance in the reported comparisons. Domestic-cat meows also showed more acoustic variability than calls from five wild-cat species. The study concerns measurable sound patterns, not a reliable translation of any one vocalization into a human-readable message.

So the findings do not mean that an owner can decode a specific cat’s needs from one meow or purr, or that every cat vocalizes in a way uniquely tailored to its person. They show that individual signals can be present in vocal acoustics and invite further study of how cats communicate.
Can losing a pet lead to prolonged grief?
Yes. A UK online survey reported that 7.5% of respondents who had lost a pet met the study’s criteria for prolonged grief disorder. The survey included 975 adults and was reported in 2026. The figure applies to respondents with a pet-loss experience in this particular survey; it is not a clinical prevalence estimate for everyone who loses a pet. The report notes that participants were recruited through a nonprobability online panel, responses were self-reported rather than assessed in structured clinical interviews, and the measure had not previously been applied in a pet-bereavement context.

Grief after a pet dies can be profound. This survey finding does not mean that grief is abnormal, and it cannot diagnose an individual. If grief is causing significant distress or disrupting daily life, a qualified mental-health professional can help assess what support may be useful.

These are four separate lines of evidence, not parts of one unified study. The autism research is an exploratory randomized trial; the dog-interaction finding comes from a small adult EEG study reported in media coverage; the cat work is an acoustic analysis; and the pet-loss figure comes from a limited online survey. Their results are useful starting points for curiosity and empathy, but their designs answer different questions and support different levels of confidence.
