“Skinny cat” is an informal description, not a breed category. It can mean a cat with little or no coat, or a naturally slender, long-lined build. These seven breeds cover both: four with hairless or sparse coat types, and three with distinctive coats and lean physiques. A breed’s typical appearance is never a reason to assume an individual cat is underweight; a veterinarian can assess that cat’s health and body condition.
Which slim or sparse-coated cat might suit your home?
These are options to explore, not a ranking. Coat type, grooming, temperature and sun sensitivity, activity, sociability, and health screening are more useful comparisons than the word “skinny.” Breed traits describe tendencies; individual cats can differ.

What should you know about each breed?
Sphynx
The Sphynx is the clearest hairless choice on this list, though “hairless” does not always mean entirely without hair: fine hair or down may be present. The International Cat Association (TICA) describes routine skin, ear, eye, dental, and nail care, along with sun and cold protection. Its guidance also stresses screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart disease. Ask a breeder for screening records and talk with a veterinarian about appropriate ongoing checks; breed risk is not an individual diagnosis. TICA’s Sphynx profile
Donskoy
Donskoy coat types can range from bald to patchy or peach-fuzz, and some cats lose hair as they mature. TICA describes the breed as active and social. A kitten’s coat may not predict its adult appearance. TICA’s Donskoy profile

Peterbald
Peterbalds may be hairless, downy, wiry, or ordinarily coated; not every cat of the breed is bald. TICA describes them as social and oriented toward companionship, a useful point to weigh if the cat would spend long periods alone. TICA’s Peterbald profile
Lykoi
The Lykoi has a partially hairless, sparse coat, rather than complete hairlessness. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) says coat coverage can change with age and molting. Devon Rex

Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex combines a slender, long-legged, muscular build with a short waved coat. The Rex Cat Association says the coat moults and the breed is not hypoallergenic; pale or white-eared cats outdoors may need sun protection. TICA also notes HCM and patellar-luxation concerns. Oriental Shorthair
This is the list’s clearest slender-body choice rather than a hairless one: TICA describes a long, lean, athletic cat with a very short, sleek coat, and an active, social temperament. As one breed-reference example—not a universal target—TICA lists adult female weight at approximately 5–8 pounds and adult male weight at approximately 8–12 pounds. Are hairless cats low maintenance?
No. Cats Protection says hairless cats need routine skin maintenance and protection from sun, heat, and cold. TICA describes occasional gentle bathing and skin cleaning for Sphynx cats, while warning that over-bathing can disrupt the skin’s balance. Ask your veterinarian what bathing and skin-care routine is appropriate for the individual cat rather than assuming that frequent bathing is needed. Nails also need routine attention. Are Devon Rex or Cornish Rex cats hypoallergenic?
No breed can be promised hypoallergenic. TICA says Devon Rex cats shed and produce allergens like other cats; the Rex Cat Association says Cornish Rex cats moult and are not hypoallergenic. If allergies matter in your household, spend time with the specific cat before committing. Individual reactions vary, and a breed label cannot guarantee how someone will respond.

How do you choose responsibly?
- Match care needs to your routine. Hairless and sparsely coated cats need attention to skin and temperature; lean, coated breeds may suit people seeking a distinctive silhouette without choosing a hairless cat.
- Consider company and enrichment. TICA describes Donskoy and Oriental Shorthair cats as active or social, and describes Peterbalds as company-oriented. Plan for activity and interaction while remembering that breed tendencies do not guarantee an individual’s temperament.
- Ask about health screening. For a Sphynx, ask for HCM screening records and discuss follow-up with a veterinarian. Ask breeders what other health checks they perform and request documentation.
- Put welfare ahead of an extreme look. Cats Protection warns about welfare concerns associated with traits such as shortened legs, extreme wrinkling, and curled ears in so-called “bully” cats. It also says the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) recognizes Sphynx but discourages other hair-deficient breeds in the UK. That is the position of one organization in a specific national context, not a universal rule.
- Assess the individual cat. A slender breed standard does not establish that a particular cat is healthy or underweight. Have a veterinarian assess that cat rather than judging by breed appearance.
