In a 2024 study of UK veterinary records, Sphynx cats had the lowest estimated life expectancy at birth among the breeds analysed: 6.68 years. Bengal cats ranked next at 8.51 years. These are population estimates based on cats receiving primary veterinary care in the UK in 2019—not universal breed lifespans or predictions for an individual cat.
Which cat breeds had the shortest life expectancy?
The ranking below lists the seven lowest estimates among the study’s purebred categories. The figures are life expectancy at age zero, with the study’s 95% confidence intervals and recorded deaths shown for context. The results come from Table 6 of the 2024 study of UK cats under primary veterinary care in 2019.

| Rank in this study | Breed category | Estimated life expectancy at age zero | 95% confidence interval | Recorded deaths |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sphynx | 6.68 years | 4.53–8.83 years | 18 |
| 2 | Bengal | 8.51 years | 7.12–9.90 years | 73 |
| 3 | British cats | 9.58 years | 8.73–10.43 years | 194 |
| 4 | Russian cats | 9.65 years | 7.20–12.10 years | 19 |
| 5 | Maine Coon | 9.71 years | 8.42–11.00 years | 69 |
| 6 | Norwegian Forest Cat | 9.95 years | 7.55–12.35 years | 15 |
| 7 | Ragdoll | 10.31 years | 8.86–11.76 years | 69 |
“British cats” combines British Blue and British Longhair; “Russian cats” combines Russian Blue and unspecified Russian cats. Those groupings matter: the table does not provide separate estimates for every variety within them. Two categories also have fewer than 20 recorded deaths, and the confidence intervals overlap for several breeds. The ranking is therefore a description of this dataset, not proof that adjacent breeds have meaningfully different longevity.

The authors define life expectancy as “the mean lifespan of animals alive in the population.” In this study, the age-zero figure was calculated using a cohort life table. It is not the average age at death of every cat currently alive, a maximum lifespan, or a countdown for a kitten. An individual cat may live substantially longer or shorter than the population estimate.
#1 Best Overall
For UK companion cats overall, the study estimated life expectancy at age zero at 11.74 years. Its estimate was 11.89 years for crossbred cats and 10.41 years for purebred cats. Among the breed categories analysed, Burmese cats had the highest estimate at 14.42 years, followed by Birman cats at 14.39 years. These figures provide context for the low estimates, but they describe the same specific UK population and study period.
How strong is the breed ranking?
The study by Kendy Tzu-yun Teng, Dave C Brodbelt, David B Church, and Dan G O’Neill used VetCompass clinical records for cats under primary veterinary care in the UK during 2019. The peer-reviewed paper, “Life tables of annual life expectancy and risk factors for mortality in cats in the UK,” appeared in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery in 2024. Read the study.

- It is a national snapshot, not a worldwide rule. Population composition, breeding and ownership practices, veterinary care, outdoor exposure, and euthanasia decisions can differ between countries.
- The sample represents cats seen at participating primary-care practices. Cats without that kind of veterinary care may be less represented, and deaths before a cat’s first practice visit may not appear in the records.
- Counts are uneven. The table records 18 Sphynx deaths and 15 Norwegian Forest Cat deaths, compared with 194 British cats and 73 Bengals. Estimates based on fewer deaths warrant particular caution.
- Breed is not the only factor associated with lifespan. The authors also reported associations with sex, neuter status, and adult body-weight deviation from the median within breed-and-sex groups.
The authors found a higher estimated life expectancy for crossbred than purebred cats in this dataset, but that is a population association. It does not establish that breed status alone causes an individual cat to live longer or shorter. The study describes peer-reviewed evidence on breed longevity as relatively sparse and calls for further epidemiological work.

Use the ranking as a clue about patterns observed in one UK dataset, not as a reason to assume a particular cat will die young. The Sphynx estimate, for example, was 6.68 years, but its confidence interval ranged from 4.53 to 8.83 years and was based on 18 recorded deaths. Neither that estimate nor any other row predicts an individual cat’s lifespan.
Rank #3
For a specific cat, discuss health and preventive care with a veterinarian who knows its history. The study’s associations with sex, neuter status, and body-weight deviation show why a breed label alone cannot account for the factors linked with lifespan in the data.
