Some foods can poison cats; others can cause infection, digestive upset, or physical injury. Keep the nine food groups below out of reach, and contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat may have eaten a toxic item. The list is not exhaustive. Milk and dairy are also poor default treats for many cats because they can cause digestive upset, but they are not equivalent to the potentially serious toxins discussed here.

Which foods are dangerous for cats?

The risks differ: some ingredients can damage blood cells or affect the nervous system, while raw foods can carry pathogens and bones can cause injury or blockage. For suspected ingestion of a potentially toxic food, contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, or an animal poison-control service promptly.

1. Onion, garlic, chives, leeks, shallots, and scallions

Allium vegetables can damage red blood cells and lead to anemia in cats. They are unsafe cooked, raw, dried, or powdered. Check soups, sauces, gravies, seasoned meats, and other mixed dishes for onion or garlic; a hidden ingredient still counts. VCA’s cat hazard guidance and ASPCA Poison Control’s food guidance describe these risks.

2. Chocolate

Chocolate contains methylxanthines, which can cause toxicity. Darker chocolate, baking chocolate, and cocoa powder contain higher concentrations and are of greater concern, but any suspected ingestion merits veterinary advice. Signs can include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, an abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, or seizures. Risk depends on the product and exposure; do not use a dog-focused dose chart to judge a cat’s risk. ASPCA Poison Control explains the hazards and possible signs.

3. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and other caffeine sources

Caffeine is also a methylxanthine. Keep coffee grounds, tea, energy drinks, and other caffeine-containing products away from cats. The potential effects and urgency depend on the product and amount, so call a veterinary professional rather than trying to estimate safety at home. ASPCA Poison Control lists caffeine among foods and substances to avoid.

4. Alcohol

Alcohol in drinks or food can cause serious systemic toxicity. Possible effects include vomiting, poor coordination, depression, breathing difficulty, tremors, coma, or death. Treat a suspected exposure as urgent and contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly. ASPCA Poison Control outlines alcohol-related hazards.

5. Raw yeast dough

Raw dough can expand in a cat’s stomach, causing painful bloating or twisting. As yeast ferments, it can also produce alcohol. Because both the expanding dough and fermentation are concerns, contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat eats raw yeast dough. ASPCA Poison Control and the U.S. FDA describe food-related hazards for pets.

6. Grapes and raisins

Keep grapes and raisins away from cats and seek veterinary advice if one is eaten. The cat-specific risk is uncertain: VCA says it is unknown whether grapes and raisins cause the same kidney injury in cats as in dogs. Do not assume the dog-related risk is established for cats, but do not wait for symptoms before calling.

7. Foods containing xylitol

Xylitol-containing foods and products should be kept out of reach. ASPCA describes possible low blood sugar and liver damage depending on the amount, but the cited guidance does not establish a cat-specific dose threshold. If your cat may have eaten xylitol, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for advice; do not apply a dog dose estimate to a cat. ASPCA Poison Control discusses xylitol exposure.

8. Raw or undercooked meat and eggs

Raw animal foods are not necessarily classic poisons, but they can carry Salmonella, E. coli, and other infectious hazards for animals and people. The Cornell Feline Health Center does not recommend raw diets, citing possible bacteria, viruses, and parasites and no clear health benefit. This is a foodborne-infection concern, distinct from the toxin risks above.

What about milk and other dairy?

Many cats are lactose-intolerant, so milk and dairy can cause diarrhea or other digestive upset. They are poor default treats, but that digestive risk is not the same as exposure to a potentially lethal toxin. For guidance on feeding cats, see the Cornell Feline Health Center.

What should you do if your cat eats a dangerous food?

  1. Call promptly. Contact your cat’s veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, or an animal poison-control service if you suspect ingestion. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
  2. Share the details you know. Identify the food or ingredient, estimate how much your cat ate, and note when it happened. Keep the packaging or a sample available if possible.
  3. Follow professional instructions. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to do so.

Poison-control contact details can change. In the United States, ASPCA lists (888) 426-4435; VCA lists Pet Poison Helpline at 1-800-213-6680. Confirm current service availability and contact details when you call.
