To start clicker training, make the click predict a reward, then click at the instant your animal does the behavior you want and promptly deliver that reward. The click is a marker, not the reward itself. A distinct, consistent word such as “yes” can serve the same purpose if you do not want to use a mechanical clicker.
What clicker training means
Clicker training is marker-based positive reinforcement. The brief sound tells the learner which moment earned reinforcement; the reward that follows is what makes the behavior worthwhile. The American Kennel Club’s guide to clicker training explains that a click can identify the desired moment more clearly than general praise. Karen Pryor Clicker Training likewise defines its approach as positive reinforcement using a marker signal.

At first, the click has no special meaning to the animal. Pairing it with a valued reward teaches the animal to expect that reward when the marker sounds.
How to begin, step by step
- Set up for an easy start. Choose a quiet place with few distractions. Have your marker ready and prepare small rewards that your animal is motivated to receive.
- Pair the marker with a reward. Click once, then promptly give a reward. Repeat this pairing in several short opportunities. A veterinary behavior overview from Cornell recommends repeating in another location and across subsequent sessions, too.
- Choose one achievable behavior. For a sit, wait for your animal’s hindquarters to reach the ground. Click at that instant, then deliver the reward.
- Use a method that fits the behavior. A lure can prompt a behavior; shaping rewards successive approximations toward a more complex action; capturing marks a useful behavior the animal offers spontaneously.
- Add a cue when the behavior is predictable. For example, PDSA’s sit-training guidance describes adding a command word after the learner is following a lure for a sit.
- Make new challenges easier. When you move to a different place or increase difficulty, simplify the task if your animal struggles, then build success again in smaller steps.
When to click and when to reward
Click while the desired behavior is happening, not after the moment has passed. The click marks the moment; the reward can follow just afterward. That brief gap is what the marker bridges.

While your animal is learning what the click means, follow every click with a reward. If progress stalls, check whether the reward matters to that animal, whether the setting or task is too difficult, and whether your timing is marking the behavior you intend. There is no universal repetition count or guaranteed learning timeline established in the cited guidance.
Choose a marker and rewards that suit your animal
A mechanical clicker is one option, not a requirement. The American Kennel Club names a distinct word such as “yes,” a whistle, a finger snap, or a tongue click as alternatives. Whichever marker you use, keep it clear and consistent; if the mechanical click is unsuitable for your learner, choose another distinct signal.
