The ASPCA’s account, published March 5, 2026, follows the cat’s medical care, a gradual adoption decision shaped by grief, and a small adjustment that helped Nocturne reach the bed on her own.
From the ASPCA Adoption Center to foster care
Nocturne came to the ASPCA Adoption Center in July 2025 through the organization’s longstanding partnership with Animal Care Centers of NYC. According to the ASPCA, she was 15 and showed early signs of chronic kidney disease. The organization says a special diet was prescribed to help slow the disease’s progression; it does not name the diet.

The ASPCA also reports that Nocturne had a dental procedure during which nine teeth were extracted. After medical clearance, she went to a foster home, where she remained until the end of 2025. These are details from the ASPCA’s account, not an independent review of her medical records.

How Olivia decided she was ready to adopt again
Olivia had adopted a cat named Inks from the ASPCA Adoption Center eight years earlier. After Inks died, she grieved and leaned on loved ones and counseling resources through her veterinarian’s office. She recalls, “The apartment felt so noticeably quiet without him there.”

Olivia says she was unsure when she would be ready to adopt again. Near the end of 2025, she found Nocturne’s profile on the ASPCA website and kept thinking about her. “Senior cats often wait the longest to find a forever home,” Olivia said, explaining why she applied. That is her personal observation; the ASPCA story does not provide adoption statistics to establish how long senior cats generally wait.
Meeting Nocturne and bringing her home
Olivia and Nocturne first met over a Zoom call with Nocturne’s foster caregiver. The adoption was finalized in early January, according to the ASPCA. Olivia says the meeting did not feel like meeting “a frail older cat.” That was her impression of Nocturne, rather than a claim about every older cat.

In the new home, Nocturne initially approached her surroundings cautiously and sought reassurance. Olivia reports that Nocturne ate her prescribed special diet, used the litter box without trouble, and grew more affectionate and confident. The account describes this cat’s transition; it does not establish how another cat will respond to a move.
A small change helped Nocturne reach the bed
Olivia noticed that Nocturne needed help jumping up and down from the bed. She brought home a small footstool, which Nocturne took to immediately and used confidently. Olivia said it let Nocturne climb up for bedtime cuddles while maintaining independence and comfort.

The footstool is a practical detail from Nocturne’s story, not a veterinary recommendation or a tested product endorsement. A cat’s mobility and the suitability of any home setup vary; Olivia’s account supports only what worked for Nocturne.

Olivia describes Nocturne as playful and affectionate, and says, “She’s shown me that senior animals can be surprisingly playful and affectionate at any age or stage of their lives.” Her experience offers one example of an older cat forming a bond and settling into a home. It does not predict an individual cat’s temperament, medical needs, or adjustment.

Olivia’s closing thought captures what she hopes others might notice in an older cat: “The cat who isn’t jumping up at the kennel door may be the one who will quietly transform your life.” The ASPCA story documents Nocturne’s path from July 2025 intake through her early-January adoption, but gives no update on her status after the article was published on March 5, 2026.
