Yes, a cat can survive a fall of five stories, but the Chicago cat described in an October 15, 2026, A-Z Animals report appears to have experienced an exceptional outcome—not proof that such falls are safe. The black cat jumped from a fifth-floor window during a May 2021 apartment fire, landed on grass, bounced once, hid under a car and then appeared to escape without an obvious injury.
What happened in Chicago
Chicago Fire Department personnel were recording a fire in the city’s Englewood neighborhood when smoke poured from a fifth-floor apartment window and a black cat appeared. The cat leapt from the building, struck the grass, bounced, ran to shelter beneath a car and later emerged. In the video account reported by A-Z Animals, it showed no obvious injury and walked away.

The incident is best understood as an unusual survival event. A cat that runs immediately after a fall may still have fractures, chest trauma or internal injuries that are not visible at first.

The righting reflex controls orientation
Cats have a righting reflex governed by the balance system in the inner ear. When a cat begins to fall, its head turns first to establish an upright reference. Its flexible spine then rotates the front and rear parts of the body so the paws point downward. Loosely attached collarbones give the shoulders additional freedom of movement, and a cat can perform the maneuver without pushing against a wall or another object. Most kittens have refined this reflex by about seven weeks of age.

The reflex helps a cat orient itself; it does not make the landing harmless. A cat can be perfectly upright and still hit the ground with enough force to break bones or injure the chest.
Body design can reduce, but not remove, impact

- Low mass relative to surface area: A cat’s size and proportions can limit the force generated compared with a much heavier animal.
- Spread limbs: Extending the legs increases drag and can slow the descent.
- Bent legs: Flexed joints act as a moving cushion, lengthening the time over which the body stops.
- Flexible joints and spine: The body can distribute some of the impact instead of transmitting it through one rigid structure.
- Grass: A yielding surface can absorb more energy than concrete, asphalt or another hard landing area.
These mechanisms lower peak impact force under favorable conditions. They do not guarantee survival, and a change in landing position or surface can produce a very different result.

No scientifically established height is safe for a falling cat. The popular claim that falls become safer above six or seven stories is based on an incomplete picture of veterinary cases, not a safety threshold.

A-Z Animals reports that a 1987 study reviewed 132 cats treated at a New York veterinary hospital. Cats that died at the scene or never reached that hospital were not included. That selection means the apparent pattern—fewer reported injuries at the greatest heights—cannot be interpreted as evidence that a longer fall is safer.
The same article reports later research involving 119 cats in which falls from the seventh floor or higher were associated with more severe injuries and more chest trauma. The studies, as summarized by the article, show why outcomes cannot be reduced to a single number: landing surface, body position, impact force, physical condition and which animals receive veterinary care all affect the result.

What injuries can follow a high fall?
Veterinarians use the term high-rise syndrome for injuries associated with falls from buildings. Possible consequences include broken limbs, jaw fractures, chest trauma, collapsed lungs and internal injuries. A cat may walk, hide or act alert because of adrenaline while still being seriously hurt.
Breathing problems can worsen after the initial event. A normal-looking cat therefore cannot be cleared by observation alone, particularly after a fall from a building, balcony or elevated window.

What to do if a cat falls
- Keep the cat still and contained. Approach carefully; frightened or painful cats may bite or scratch. Use a carrier or a firm box with ventilation.
- Check breathing without delaying transport. Do not force the mouth open or manipulate suspected fractures.
- Seek prompt veterinary care. Any significant fall warrants examination even when the cat walks away or appears comfortable.
- Tell the clinic what happened. Report the approximate height, landing surface, time of the fall and any changes in breathing, movement or behavior.
- Follow monitoring instructions. Delayed breathing difficulty, weakness, collapse, bleeding, vomiting or refusal to move requires urgent attention.
The practical answer
The Chicago cat may really have survived a five-story fall, helped by its righting reflex, body mechanics and a grass landing. That extraordinary outcome should not be used to test a cat’s limits or to reassure someone after an accident. As Andrew Clemente put it, “The practical conclusion is much less exciting but far more useful: there is no safe floor from which a cat can fall.”
