The rescue named him Sparks in honor of Ed Schmidt and Anthony Hall, whose quick call brought him to safety.
How Sparks was found
Schmidt and Hall were working for Ameren in St. Louis in August when they came across a dog alone and dangerously thin. Schmidt later said the dog looked like he was “probably not going to make it another day or two.” Hall gave the dog half of his sandwich, then the pair contacted Stray Rescue of St. Louis and sent the organization a photograph.

The workers’ intervention mattered because the dog was already in severe physical distress. Katie Grana, Stray Rescue’s event and public relations coordinator, described him as “emaciated; malnourished.” The rescue took him in for examination and care.
What veterinarians discovered
An X-ray showed that the dog’s stomach was full of rocks. The AOL/Nexstar Media account says he had eaten whatever he could find because he was so hungry. The finding documented how extreme his deprivation had become, although the account does not provide a detailed treatment plan, recovery timeline, or medical-cost figure.

Stray Rescue gave him the name Sparks to honor Schmidt and Hall. Naming him after the two men also preserved the connection between the frightened stray and the people who stopped to help when they found him.
The rescuers came back to see him
A couple of months after the initial rescue, Schmidt and Hall visited Sparks at Stray Rescue. The reunion gave them a chance to see his condition after rehabilitation. Schmidt’s reaction was brief but telling: “He looks good.”

The visit was not presented as an adoption handoff by the Ameren workers. Instead, it was a reunion before Sparks moved on to a permanent family.

How Sparks got adopted
Stray Rescue of St. Louis reported that Sparks had found a loving new forever home. The AOL/Nexstar Media account does not identify the adopters, state when the adoption was finalized, or describe the screening and transition process. It does establish the outcome: after being found starving and alone, Sparks left rescue care for a permanent home.

Why this rescue story stands out
A fast call connected a vulnerable dog with help
Schmidt and Hall did not attempt to manage a severely ill stray on their own. They offered immediate food, contacted an established rescue, and supplied a photograph so the organization could respond. That sequence connected Sparks with people equipped to assess and treat him.
The medical finding showed the severity of his hunger
The rocks found in Sparks’ stomach were more than a dramatic detail. They showed that his hunger had driven him to ingest objects that were not food. Grana’s description and the X-ray together explain why the rescue considered him to be in such bad shape.

Recovery made a reunion possible
When Schmidt and Hall returned, they saw a dog whose condition had improved enough for Schmidt to say, “He looks good.” The later adoption report indicates that Sparks’ recovery continued beyond that reunion and ended with placement in a forever home.
