There are two distinct Corgi breeds: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. They share a Welsh farming history, short legs, long bodies, erect ears, and a talent for herding cattle—but they are separate breeds with different origins, tails, body shapes, coat colors, and typical temperaments.
The fastest visual clue is usually the tail: Cardigans have long, foxlike tails, while Pembrokes traditionally have naturally short tails or tails docked close to the body in countries and circumstances where docking occurs. That clue is useful, but the ears, bone, outline, and coat color provide a more reliable identification when considered together.

These are breed tendencies and conformation standards—not guarantees about an individual dog. Genetics, socialization, training, age, health, and past experiences all matter.
Are Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis different breeds?
Yes. “Corgi” is a general term commonly used for two separate breeds, not one breed with two varieties. The American Kennel Club recognizes the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi separately in the Herding Group. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale also lists them separately: the Cardigan as breed 38 and the Pembroke as breed 39.

The distinction is not a recent marketing or naming decision. The English Kennel Club recognized the two as separate breeds in 1934. The AKC recognized the Cardigan in 1935, and later naming clarifications did not create the distinction between the breeds.
Origins and history
The two breeds are associated with different regions of Wales. Pembrokes are linked with Pembrokeshire in southern Wales, while Cardigans are linked with Cardiganshire, now generally called Ceredigion, in western Wales.
Both were practical farm dogs rather than ornamental companions. Welsh farmers used them to move and manage cattle, sometimes by nipping at the animals’ heels, while also helping guard the farmstead. Their low stature allowed them to work close to the ground and avoid some of the kicks directed at taller dogs. That working background helps explain why modern Corgis can be alert, vocal, energetic, persistent, and quick to notice movement.
Breed-history accounts describe the Cardigan as the older of the two breeds and associate it with older British dog lines, including a possible Teckel—or Dachshund-related—influence. Pembroke history is commonly connected with Nordic Spitz-type dogs and possible Viking or continental influences. These are traditional historical accounts, not a complete genetic explanation of every modern Corgi or a precisely documented lineage for every dog.
How to tell a Pembroke from a Cardigan
1. Start with the tail
A Cardigan normally has a long tail that extends behind the body and resembles a fox’s tail. A Pembroke is traditionally described in the American standard as having a naturally short tail or a tail docked as short as possible.
Tail length is the most useful first clue, but it is not an infallible identification test. Docking laws and practices vary between countries, some Pembrokes are naturally bobtailed, and mixed-breed or poorly documented dogs may not match either breed standard. A short tail alone does not prove that a dog is a Pembroke, and a long tail does not mean that a dog is a Pembroke mix—it is normal for a Cardigan.
2. Compare the ears and head
Pembroke ears tend to look smaller, sharper, and more triangular. Cardigan ears are generally larger and have more rounded tips. The Cardigan’s head and heavier bone often create a more substantial impression, while the Pembroke frequently has a more compact, foxier appearance.
These differences are most useful when comparing well-bred, documented examples. They become much less dependable in mixes, dogs outside the breed standard, puppies whose features are still developing, or photographs taken from misleading angles.
3. Look at the body and bone
Both breeds are short-legged, long-bodied, deep-chested, and athletic. Neither should look fragile or incapable of work.

Cardigans are generally slightly larger and heavier-boned. Their limbs and body often appear rounder and their outline more curving. Pembrokes tend to look more compact, with oval bone and a somewhat more linear or rectangular outline. Weight varies with sex, body condition, height, muscle, and individual structure, so a scale number should never replace a proper assessment of healthy body condition.
4. Check the coat color
Cardigans have the broader range of standard colors. Depending on the applicable standard, they may be red, sable, brindle, black and white with brindle or tan points, or blue merle, with specified white markings.

The U.S. Pembroke standard is narrower: standard colors include red, sable, fawn, and black and tan, with permitted white markings. In a U.S. breed-standard comparison, merle and brindle should not be presented as standard Pembroke colors.
Color can help identify a dog, but it should not be used alone. A dog’s registration, pedigree, breeder documentation, or a qualified breed professional is more dependable than an internet color chart—especially for mixes.
Temperament: are Pembrokes friendlier than Cardigans?
Neither breed has a guaranteed personality, and it is too simplistic to label one universally friendlier, quieter, easier, or better with children. Still, breed tendencies can help prospective owners know what to look for.
Pembrokes are often described as immediately outgoing, lively, affectionate, and ready to engage with people and activities. Many are highly responsive and enjoy being included in whatever their household is doing.

Cardigans are often described as thoughtful, adaptable, and affectionate with their families, but somewhat more measured or reserved around unfamiliar people. That reserve is not the same as being unfriendly, and an individual Cardigan may be extremely social.
Both breeds are intelligent working dogs. They can learn quickly, but they may also be vocal, independent, watchful, or occasionally stubborn. Their herding heritage can contribute to barking, chasing moving objects, attempting to control household activity, or nipping at heels. These behaviors are more likely to become troublesome when a dog lacks exercise, training, socialization, or an appropriate outlet for its instincts.
Exercise and training needs
Corgis are small in height but not low-energy dogs. Both need regular physical activity and opportunities to use their minds. A short potty walk followed by a long day of boredom is unlikely to meet the needs of a healthy young Corgi.

There is no single correct mileage or exercise duration for every Corgi. A puppy, senior, overweight dog, hot-weather dog, or dog with an orthopedic problem has different needs from a fit adult. Watch for fatigue, soreness, reluctance to move, overheating, or behavior changes, and discuss concerns with a veterinarian.

Because both breeds have short legs and long backs, exercise should be sensible and impact should be managed. Cardigan breed guidance specifically cautions owners to avoid jumping and stairs that could contribute to back injury. That does not mean every stair or movement is automatically dangerous, but it does support using ramps, gates, controlled access, and low-impact habits where practical—particularly for puppies, older dogs, overweight dogs, or dogs with known orthopedic concerns.
Start training early and continue throughout the dog’s life. Reward-based methods, clear routines, short sessions, and consistent household rules usually work better than intimidation or punishment. A training clicker and small training treats can be useful optional tools, but neither is required, and treats do not replace good timing, clear communication, or professional help when a behavior problem is serious.
Early socialization should include calm, positive exposure to people, handling, surfaces, sounds, transportation, and appropriate dogs. Socialization is not forcing a puppy to greet everyone; it is helping the dog develop confidence and the ability to disengage calmly.
Which Corgi is better for families?
Either breed can be a good family companion when properly socialized and trained, but neither should be chosen solely because it looks appealing in photographs. Children and dogs should always be supervised, and parents should teach children not to climb on, chase, hug tightly, disturb, or take food from a dog.
A Pembroke may appeal to a household looking for a compact, highly interactive dog with an often outgoing style. A Cardigan may suit someone who prefers a somewhat more measured companion and is comfortable with a slightly larger, heavier dog. Those are starting points—not predictions.
Before choosing, ask:
- Can the household provide daily activity and mental engagement?
- Can everyone tolerate regular barking and shedding?
- Will someone provide consistent training and supervision?
- Is the household prepared to manage a long-backed dog carefully around jumping, stairs, and excess weight?
- Does the specific dog show the temperament and energy level that fit the home?
Grooming and shedding
Both Pembrokes and Cardigans have short, weather-resistant double coats. Both shed regularly, often with heavier seasonal shedding periods. Regular brushing removes loose undercoat and helps distribute oils, but it will not eliminate shedding.
A dog slicker brush or comparable grooming brush can help manage loose coat when used gently and appropriately. Check the skin as you brush, and avoid aggressive scraping that causes irritation. Nail trimming, ear checks, bathing when needed, dental care, and routine veterinary visits are also part of responsible ownership.
Neither breed is hypoallergenic. Do not routinely shave a double-coated Corgi to solve shedding or heat concerns. If clipping is being considered for a medical or welfare reason, consult a veterinarian or qualified groomer first.

Health and responsible acquisition
Prospective owners should focus on documented health information rather than assuming that either breed is automatically healthier. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America identifies hip dysplasia, eye disorders, and von Willebrand disease among health concerns for which many breeders screen. Its guidance also discusses additional or optional screening involving elbows, cardiac health, and degenerative myelopathy.
Recommendations can vary by country, registry, breed club, and the date on which guidance was issued. Before committing to a puppy, verify the current recommendations from the relevant parent club and look for publicly recorded results where available.
Ask a breeder for:
- Documented health-testing results for both parents
- Information about inherited conditions in the family line
- Veterinary records, vaccination details, and identification information
- A written contract and a clear return or rehoming policy
- Details about how puppies are raised, handled, and socialized
- An opportunity to meet the mother and see where the puppies are raised, when practical
A breeder’s statement that dogs are “health tested” is not the same as independently verifiable results. A responsible breeder should be willing to explain what was tested, which organization performed or recorded the evaluation, and what the results mean.
If you are considering an adult dog or rescue, ask about the dog’s behavior around children, dogs, cats, handling, food, visitors, traffic, and being left alone. A rescue dog’s history may be incomplete, so allow time for adjustment and arrange professional behavioral support if needed.

“There is only one Corgi breed.”
There are two recognized breeds: Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
“A long-tailed Corgi must be a Pembroke mix.”
No. A long, foxlike tail is a normal Cardigan feature. A long tail can also occur in a Pembroke depending on individual genetics, breeding practices, location, or mixed ancestry, so the tail is not a complete test by itself.
“A short tail proves a dog is a Pembroke.”
No. Natural bobtails, docking, mixed ancestry, and incomplete records can all complicate identification.
“Merle and brindle are standard Pembroke colors.”
They are associated with the Cardigan color range, not the standard U.S. Pembroke color list. Always check the standard applicable to the country and registry involved.

Their compact size can work in many homes, including some apartments, but their size does not make them maintenance-free. Both breeds shed, need regular activity and mental stimulation, and may bark or herd when their needs are not met.

A practical decision guide
Choose based on lifestyle first, then breed preference. If you want a smaller, highly interactive herding companion and are ready for daily training, a Pembroke may be a good match. If you prefer a somewhat heavier, more substantial dog with a long tail, broader standard color range, and potentially more reserved approach to strangers, a Cardigan may be appealing.
In either case, meet adult dogs from stable lines if possible, speak with breed clubs or experienced owners, and evaluate the individual dog in front of you. Breed popularity, tail length, coat color, or a social-media stereotype cannot predict whether a particular dog will fit your household.
For readers who want a physical reference before acquiring or raising a Corgi, compare a current Welsh Corgi handbook or Corgi breed guide, checking the edition and availability before buying. A book can supplement—but not replace—advice from a veterinarian, qualified trainer, responsible breeder, or reputable rescue organization.

What is the main difference between a Pembroke and a Cardigan Corgi?
The clearest differences are that Cardigans have long tails, larger rounded-tip ears, heavier bone, and a broader range of standard coat colors, while Pembrokes typically have shorter tails, more pointed ears, a more compact outline, and a narrower U.S. color list. They are separate breeds.
Which Corgi is friendlier, the Pembroke or the Cardigan?
Pembrokes are often more immediately outgoing, while Cardigans may be more reserved with unfamiliar people. These are tendencies rather than guarantees. Socialization, genetics, training, environment, and individual history have a major effect on temperament.
Do both types of Corgi shed?
Yes. Both have double coats and shed regularly, with heavier seasonal shedding periods. Brushing helps manage loose hair but does not eliminate shedding.
Are Corgis good with children?
Either breed can be a good family companion when properly socialized and trained, but no breed is automatically safe or suitable for every child. Children and dogs need supervision, and the individual dog’s temperament and history should be evaluated.
Is a Cardigan Corgi bigger than a Pembroke?
Generally, yes. Cardigans are typically slightly taller and heavier-boned. AKC information lists Cardigans at about 10.5–12.5 inches, with males around 30–38 pounds and females around 25–34 pounds. Pembroke ideal weights are commonly cited around 27 pounds for males and 25 pounds for females, though individual dogs vary.
The Bottom Line
Both Corgis are intelligent, active herding dogs—not interchangeable varieties of one breed. Use the tail, ears, bone, body outline, and coat color to distinguish them, but confirm uncertain cases through registration records or a qualified breed professional. For choosing a companion, prioritize the individual dog’s health, temperament, history, and fit with your household over appearance or breed stereotypes.
