A Radioactive Wasp Nest Was Found at a Former Cold War Nuclear-Weapons Site

A contaminated paper-wasp nest was found during routine monitoring near radioactive-waste tanks at South Carolina’s Savannah River Site in July 2025. Officials attributed the finding to legacy site contamination, reported no tank leak, and said there were no impacts to workers, the environment, or the public; the precise contamination pathway remains unclear.

A wasp nest contaminated with radioactive material was found during routine monitoring at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina on July 3, 2025. Workers removed it and disposed of it as radioactive waste; officials said the finding was legacy site contamination, not a loss of contamination control, and reported no tank leak. The exact pathway by which the nest became contaminated remains unclear in the reviewed sources.

The discovery drew attention because the site produced weapons materials during the Cold War. But the Savannah River Site is still an active federal complex, with current missions that include nuclear defense, waste management, and environmental cleanup.

Where the nest was found

The Savannah River Site (SRS) is near Aiken, South Carolina. According to the site’s official history, it was constructed in the early 1950s to produce tritium and plutonium-239 for nuclear weapons. It remains an operating site, rather than an abandoned facility.

Workers found the nest on a post near liquid radioactive-waste tanks while conducting routine radiation monitoring. The discovery occurred on July 3, 2025; the site report was dated July 22, according to contemporaneous coverage.

What “radioactive” means in this report

The sources describe radioactive contamination on the nest, not a confirmed health dose to a person. The U.S. Department of Energy characterized the finding as “onsite legacy radioactive contamination” and said it was “not related to a loss of contamination control,” as reported by The Guardian.

The Associated Press reported that officials described the nest’s radiation level as 10 times what federal regulations allow. The report did not provide measurement units or enough detail to translate that comparison into a dose or an individual health risk. It should not be read as meaning a person nearby received ten times a safe dose.

What sources reported What remains unknown
Officials characterized the finding as legacy site contamination and said there was no tank leak. The reviewed sources do not establish the precise source or pathway by which the nest became contaminated.
The Guardian reported that the ground and surrounding area were not contaminated; the site contractor said there were no impacts to workers, the environment, or the public. The reviewed sources do not provide a numerical exposure estimate for workers or the public.

Were the wasps radioactive?

The Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board summary identified the insects as paper wasps. The Associated Press reported that no wasps were found when the nest was removed. The evidence supports describing a contaminated nest; it does not establish that the wasps themselves were tested or intrinsically radioactive.

Workers sprayed and removed the nest and treated it as radioactive waste. The available sources do not establish that the insects were genetically altered or that a population of radioactive wasps spread beyond the site.

How did the nest become contaminated?

The exact pathway is not established in the reviewed sources. Officials attributed the material to legacy contamination at the site, but the sources do not identify what the wasps encountered or what part of the nest carried the contamination.

A watchdog group and advisory-board members raised questions about the source and circumstances. Those questions do not establish that a tank leaked; officials said no leak was found. Avoid treating any specific explanation for how the nest became contaminated as confirmed.
