Queen Elizabeth II’s corgi story began with two family dogs, Dookie and Jane, in 1933. Her own corgi, Susan, arrived as an eighteenth-birthday gift in 1944 and became the ancestor of the later royal corgis. The milestones below trace that arc without suggesting a complete year-by-year roster.
How the royal corgis began
1933: Dookie and Jane join the family
The Duke and Duchess of York acquired Dookie and Jane for their daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. The Royal Collection Trust describes them as the first corgis to join the royal family. They were family dogs, not corgis Elizabeth received as an adult: Royal Collection Trust’s account of the royal corgis.

Elizabeth’s own corgi and the start of a lineage
1944: Susan is an eighteenth-birthday gift
Princess Elizabeth received Susan for her eighteenth birthday in 1944, according to The Royal Family. Royal Collection Trust identifies Susan as the ancestor of Elizabeth II’s later corgis. That makes Susan the key link between the early family pets and the succeeding royal line.
30 May 1944: Susan appears in a photograph
A photograph taken at Windsor Castle on 30 May 1944 records Princess Elizabeth with Susan as a puppy. The Wallace Collection identified the image in material for its 2023 display: the Wallace Collection’s announcement.

1944–1959: Susan’s documented life
The Royal Kennel Club’s account of Susan’s memorial inscription gives her dates as 20 February 1944 to 26 January 1959. The dates provide a firm span for Susan’s life, but not a complete record of the dogs that followed her: Royal Kennel Club’s account.
The corgis after Susan
Royal Collection Trust says Elizabeth II’s corgis thereafter descended from Susan. The Royal Family gives her lifetime total as more than 30 corgis. Its separate hobbies page uses the broader wording “more than 30 Corgis and Dorgis,” which includes dorgis and should not be read as a corgi-only count: The Royal Family’s hobbies page.

Those figures are not an exact total, and the cited accounts do not enumerate every dog or assign each one a year. So the reliable timeline is a set of milestones: Dookie and Jane in 1933, Susan in 1944, and a later royal corgi line descended from Susan.
