Not reliably as a group. Butterflyfish vary by species: some may nip corals, and some eat corals or other invertebrates. Before adding one to a reef tank, identify the exact species, check its diet and space needs, and decide whether your corals and invertebrates can tolerate the risk.
Why reef safety depends on the species
“Butterflyfish” covers fish with different feeding habits, so the family name alone cannot tell you whether one is safe for a reef. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) cautions that many butterflyfish prey on aquarium invertebrates and some may nip corals. Its guidance puts it plainly: “Many butterflyfish will predate on invertebrates they can find in the aquarium.” OATA butterflyfish care guidance.

The spotfin butterflyfish (Chaetodon ocellatus) shows why a species-level check matters: the National Aquarium lists soft corals, anemones, tube worms and other small marine invertebrates among its foods. There is no complete, authoritative species-by-species reef compatibility chart in the cited guidance. Do not assume a species is reef-safe based on the broad label or on another butterflyfish’s reputation.

How to assess a butterflyfish for your tank
- Identify the exact species. Confirm the scientific name where possible; a common name or general “butterflyfish” label is not enough to assess diet or care.
- Check what it eats. Look for reliable species-specific information about coral polyps, soft corals, anemones, worms, shrimp, crabs and other invertebrates. Ask the seller what the individual is eating and whether it accepts appropriate prepared foods.
- Match the fish to the aquarium. Compare its activity and space requirements with your tank volume, filtration and rockwork, as well as the needs of the other fish.
- Decide whether the remaining risk is acceptable. Even with a suitable diet and setup, do not assume feeding will stop coral predation. Consider whether you could move the fish or affected coral if a problem develops.
The Oceanographic Institute of Monaco’s technical sheet on butterflyfish and coral predation recommends considering species compatibility, tank setup and nutrition. If predation continues, moving the fish or the affected coral to a better-suited aquarium may be necessary; extra feeding should not be treated as a reliable fix. Space, equipment and water conditions
OATA gives a general recommendation of at least 250 litres for one butterflyfish. This is a starting point, not a universal guarantee: active species, additional fish or species-specific requirements may call for more space. OATA also says filtration is essential. Live rock with adequate flow, internal or external filtration, or a sump-based filter can provide it; a protein skimmer may help remove dissolved organic waste. Feeding: prepared foods may not suit every species
OATA suggests meaty frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp or krill. Frozen mysis shrimp is one possible food, not a complete diet recommendation for every butterflyfish. Some individuals may accept pellets or flakes after weaning, but some species have specialized diets that are difficult to meet in an aquarium, particularly where coral polyps are involved. Do not choose such a fish unless you can provide its specific nutritional needs.
Feed only what the fish can eat within a few minutes, twice daily, and remove or avoid excess food that can decay and degrade water quality. Find out what the individual is eating before purchase rather than assuming it will readily switch to a prepared diet. OATA butterflyfish care guidance.

Tank mates and invertebrates
Compatibility is individual and species-dependent. OATA says some butterflyfish can be kept in small groups and that different species may be mixed if they do not look too similar. Similar-looking butterflyfish may be aggressive toward one another. Angelfish, tangs and damsels may be possible companions when they are not too active or aggressive, but these are general possibilities rather than guarantees for every aquarium.
