A 2020 study of wild-caught juvenile and sub-adult alligators found replacement sections with skin, nerves, blood vessels, and a supporting endoskeleton, but no skeletal muscle or normal segmented vertebrae. The findings come from a small sample and do not establish how often or how quickly this happens.
What the alligator study found
In a 2020 paper in Scientific Reports, Cindy Xu and colleagues examined tail specimens from wild-caught juvenile or sub-adult American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). The study described three regrown tail segments and one original tail specimen. The team used dissection, radiographs, MRI, and histological analysis to compare their anatomy.
The regrown segments measured approximately 6% to 18% of the animals’ total body length. The specimens were an opportunistic sample of naturally injured animals, not part of a controlled experiment. Researchers did not observe the injuries as they happened or measure regrowth over time.
How were the regrown tails different?
From the outside, the replacement sections had a different appearance from the original tails. Their scales were smaller and arranged differently, and they lacked the normal prominent dorsal scutes along the top of the tail.

- 50 GALLON SPACIOUS ENCLOSURE: Measuring 36" x 17.5" x 18" (91.5x45x45.5cm), this large reptile terrarium provides ample room for climbing, exploring, and adding thick substrate layers. It is the perfect, comfortable habitat for lizards, and other reptiles.
- OPTIMIZED FOR DESERT REPTILES: Crafted with a high-quality engineered wood-style build, this tank offers outstanding heat preservation, effortlessly locking in the high temperatures required by desert-dwelling species. The solid construction prevents heat loss, ensuring a cozy environment. (Note: Not recommended for high-humidity or aquatic setups).
- ESCAPE-PROOF GLASS DOORS & LOCK: Features high-transparency sliding glass doors for a wide panoramic view and easy daily feeding. Equipped with a custom metal lock and specially designed silicone gap-seal bars, it completely eliminates the risk of your pets or live feeder insects escaping. Includes sleek door handles for smooth sliding.
- INNOVATIVE CABLE MANAGEMENT: Designed with special rotating cable holes on the side panels (accommodating a maximum of 4 cables). This allows you to easily and neatly route cords for heating pads, thermometers, or UVB lamps while keeping the enclosure securely closed and 100% escape-proof.
- AESTHETIC PET FURNITURE: Finished in an elegant black wood grain, this sturdy enclosure breaks away from the cold look of traditional all-glass tanks. It functions not just as a professional reptile habitat, but as a piece of modern home decor that blends seamlessly into your living room or bedroom setup.
Inside, the replacement tissue contained skin, nerves, blood vessels, fat, and collagen-rich connective tissue. Instead of the normal chain of caudal vertebrae, the researchers found a ventrally positioned, unsegmented endoskeleton. The regrown sections lacked skeletal muscle.
| Feature | Original tail | Regrown sections in the study |
|---|---|---|
| Supporting skeleton | Segmented caudal vertebrae | Unsegmented endoskeleton positioned toward the underside |
| Skeletal muscle | Present | Not found in the regrown tissue |
| Other described tissues | Normal tail tissues | Skin, nerves, blood vessels, fat, and fibrous connective tissue |
Because the study found no skeletal muscle in the replacement sections, they were not a complete anatomical copy of an original tail. The researchers did not directly test swimming performance or measure how much the regrown sections could move.
Is this regeneration or wound repair?
The authors described the finding as tail repair coupled with regrowth. The replacement contained several tissue types and an internal supporting structure, so it was more than a simple surface closure. At the same time, its collagen-rich connective tissue and missing skeletal muscle and vertebrae distinguish it from a fully restored tail.

As lead author Cindy Xu put it in an Arizona State University release, “What makes the alligator interesting, apart from its size, is that the regrown tail exhibits signs of both regeneration and wound healing within the same structure.” The study describes the anatomy; it does not establish the cellular mechanisms behind the process.

The study used multiple methods to examine the specimens, including imaging and histological analysis. However, its scope is limited:
- It examined a small set of naturally injured, wild-caught animals.
- The injury histories were unknown, and the researchers did not follow the animals from the time of injury.
- The reported specimens were juvenile or sub-adult American alligators; the findings do not establish the same ability in adults or other crocodilians.
- The study did not measure how frequently regrowth occurs, how quickly it happens, or how it affects tail function.
For these reasons, the results should not be taken to mean that every young alligator regrows a tail, or that alligators reliably restore a fixed amount of tissue.

What researchers still need to learn
Further research would be needed to observe tail repair over time, determine how often it occurs, and test how age and injury characteristics affect the outcome. The study also does not establish how the process works at the cellular level or what functional effects a regrown section has on an animal.

Can alligators regrow their tails?
A 2020 study documented partial tail regrowth in wild-caught juvenile and sub-adult American alligators. It does not show that every alligator can regrow a tail.
How much of the tail regrew in the study?
The reported regrown segments measured approximately 6% to 18% of the animals’ total body length. The study did not establish a typical amount for alligators generally.

Did the regrown tails work like normal tails?
The regrown sections lacked skeletal muscle and normal segmented vertebrae, so they were not anatomical copies of original tails. The researchers did not directly measure their movement or swimming performance.
How long does an alligator take to regrow a tail?
The study did not establish a timeline. Researchers examined specimens after regrowth had occurred rather than following injuries and tissue growth over time.
Does the study explain how alligators regrow tails?
No. It documents the anatomy of the sampled regrown sections but does not establish the cellular mechanism or how frequently the process occurs.
