No. Clover mites are a species of spider mite, but “red spider mite” is an imprecise common name that can refer to other plant-feeding spider mites. Red color alone does not identify either one. Look at the mite’s front legs and where you find it: clover mites often turn up on walls or windows near lawns, while plant-feeding spider mites leave signs on foliage.
How are clover mites related to spider mites?
Clover mites are Bryobia praetiosa, a member of the Tetranychidae family—the spider mite family. That family relationship does not make “clover mite” and “red spider mite” interchangeable names. “Red spider mite” is not precise enough to identify one species; twospotted spider mites are one example of plant-feeding spider mites that can appear reddish or orange.
So the short distinction is: a clover mite is a spider mite, but a mite called a red spider mite is not necessarily a clover mite.
How can you tell them apart?
| Clue | Clover mite | Plant-feeding spider mites, such as twospotted spider mites |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Bryobia praetiosa, a specific species in Tetranychidae. University of Maryland Extension and UF/IFAS Extension. | “Red spider mite” is ambiguous; twospotted spider mite is one distinct example. NC State Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension. |
| Appearance | Under 1 mm long, reddish-brown to dark; the first pair of legs is unusually long and held forward. University of Maryland Extension. | Twospotted spider mites may be clear, green, orange, or reddish; magnification may reveal two dark spots. Color alone is not enough to identify them. NC State Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension. |
| Where you find them | On lawn grasses and other plants, or seasonally on walls, windows, and indoors. Colorado State University Extension and NC State Extension TurfFiles. | On leaves and other plant parts; twospotted spider mites have many host plants. Virginia Cooperative Extension. |
| Typical signs | May leave a red-brown stain when crushed; small feeding spots can occur on turf. University of Maryland Extension. | Foliage may show pale stippling or discoloration. Fine webbing can be visible where leaves meet stems when populations are numerous. NC State Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension. |
Check the legs, not just the color
The unusually long first pair of legs, held forward, is a useful quick clue for clover mites. Their small size and reddish-brown or dark color are less decisive because other spider mites can also look reddish. If you need to inspect one, a hand lens helps: UF/IFAS says at least 20× magnification is needed to distinguish clover mites from similar-looking Balaustium mites. That specific warning does not mean a hand lens alone identifies every mite.

Use the location and damage as supporting clues
A tiny mite on a wall or windowsill near grass or other vegetation fits the common clover-mite nuisance pattern. Mites among damaged leaves, especially with stippling and fine webbing, point instead toward plant-feeding spider mites. These clues help narrow the possibilities but do not establish a species on their own.
Does a clover mite bite or leave blood?
A red mark after crushing a clover mite is a stain, not evidence of a bite or blood. UF/IFAS attributes the stain to the mite’s body pigment or fluids and says clover mites do not directly harm people. Avoid crushing them on walls, fabrics, or other surfaces that may stain.

What should you do if you find clover mites indoors?
- Remove them without crushing. Vacuum mites from walls, windows, and sills. The Colorado State University Extension, NC State Extension TurfFiles, and UF/IFAS Extension recommend vacuuming as a removal option.
- Reduce entry routes. Seal cracks and gaps around doors and windows, and reduce lush vegetation close to the foundation. Local guidance on the width of a plant-free strip varies, so there is no single measurement here that guarantees exclusion.
- Keep pesticide use secondary. NC State says chemical control is usually not required for ordinary clover-mite appearances indoors. If you consider a pesticide, follow the product label and current local guidance.
What if the mites are on plants?
Look for pale stippling or discoloration on leaves and fine webbing where leaves join stems. Identify the mite before choosing a control: Virginia Cooperative Extension cautions that commercially raised predatory mites intended for twospotted spider mites may not work against other mite species.
