Are Forget-Me-Nots Safe for Cats? Identify the Plant Before You Decide

It depends on which plant is called a forget-me-not. A veterinarian-reviewed article describes woodland forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica) as non-poisonous to cats, but the ASPCA cat plant list does not provide a species-specific entry confirming that finding. Chinese forget-me-not (Cynoglossum amabile) is a different plant; the ASPCA lists it as toxic to horses, not cats. If your cat may have eaten an unidentified plant or seems unwell, contact a veterinarian promptly.

Which plant do you mean by “forget-me-not”?

The common name is used for different plants, so identifying the species matters. Woodland forget-me-not is Myosotis sylvatica; Chinese forget-me-not is Cynoglossum amabile, also called hound’s tongue. The available cat-specific information is not the same for both.

Plant What the available sources say about cats What the ASPCA listing says
Woodland forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica) A veterinarian-reviewed secondary article describes it as non-poisonous to cats. The ASPCA cat list consulted does not provide a species-specific entry confirming that finding. The list is not all-inclusive, so the absence of an entry is not proof of safety.
Chinese forget-me-not / hound’s tongue (Cynoglossum amabile) The ASPCA page does not classify it as toxic to cats; it does not establish cat-specific safety. The ASPCA identifies it as toxic to horses because of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Its warning concerns liver disease in horses after large or prolonged ingestion.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

Woodland forget-me-not

The reported assessment that Myosotis sylvatica is non-poisonous to cats comes from a veterinarian-reviewed secondary article, rather than a species-specific entry in the ASPCA cat list. Treat that as reassuring but not as a guarantee that the plant is safe in every amount or circumstance.

Chinese forget-me-not

The ASPCA’s warning for Cynoglossum amabile is specifically about horses. It identifies pyrrolizidine alkaloids and describes liver disease following large or prolonged ingestion; it does not say that the plant is toxic to cats. Do not transfer a horse-specific warning to cats as if it were cat-specific evidence.

Why a missing cat-list entry is not a safety guarantee

The ASPCA says its plant lists are not all-inclusive. It also notes that eating plant material can cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs. That general risk is distinct from evidence that a particular plant contains a toxin dangerous to cats.

What to do if your cat may have eaten one

  1. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly if the plant is unidentified or your cat is showing signs of illness. Do not wait for symptoms when you are unsure what was eaten.
  2. Share a clear photo or a plant sample so the plant can be identified. Include the plant’s label or name, if available, and describe what your cat may have eaten and when.
  3. Follow professional advice rather than trying home treatment. Do not substitute a home remedy for veterinary guidance.

ASPCA Poison Control gives this U.S. number: (888) 426-4435. The ASPCA advises: “If you suspect your pet may have ingested a potentially toxic substance, call the ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 or contact your local veterinarian as soon as possible.” ASPCA Poison Control. Cornell University’s Common Cat Hazards guidance also advises prompt veterinary consultation for suspected toxic exposure.
