Some cats called “tailless” have a short, visible bobtail. The distinction matters: the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) describes the Manx as its only truly tailless breed, while Japanese Bobtails, American Bobtails and Pixiebobs have short or bobbed tails. Manx cats can also be born with tails.
Here are six breeds and breed groups with useful registry-backed information. They are not a ranking: available profiles do not support a fair comparison of eight breeds, and no breed guarantees a particular personality or household fit.

Are all bobtail cats tailless?
No. “Bobtail” generally refers to a short tail, not an absent one. The CFA’s distinction is that Manx is its only truly tailless breed; its Manx profile recognizes both tailless and tailed varieties. The International Cat Association (TICA) also notes that not all Manx kittens are born without tails. Japanese Bobtails, American Bobtails and Pixiebobs are described as bobtailed or short-tailed, not as necessarily tailless. Registry terminology can vary, so check the relevant registry’s description rather than treating the terms as interchangeable.

Which tailless and bobtailed cats might suit a home?
Registry profiles offer general descriptions, not guarantees about an individual cat. Think about how much time you are home, the cat’s need for interaction and activity, the coat-care routine you can sustain, and how the cat may fit with children or other pets. Meet the cat and ask about its health and temperament rather than choosing by breed label alone.
Manx
TICA describes the Manx as medium-sized, compact and muscular, and characterizes the breed as affectionate and generally good with children and other pets. Its profile says Manx cats prefer not to be left alone for long periods, a point to consider if the household is often empty. CFA recognizes both tailless and tailed Manx varieties.
Rank #2
Health deserves careful discussion. TICA says the gene associated with taillessness can also create health issues. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) Manx guidance cautions that an overly shortened back may raise the risk of associated defects. Ask a breeder how kittens are monitored and what breeding practices are used; registry guidance is not a diagnosis of any particular cat.
Cymric
In TICA’s classification, Cymric is the longhaired member of the Manx breed group; the distinction is coat length. TICA describes Cymrics as affectionate and adaptable, and notes they may enjoy teaser and catnip toys. Its Cymric profile recommends weekly combing, sometimes more often during shedding seasons.
The same profile warns that the gene that can produce taillessness can also create health issues, which responsible breeders typically identify and address in kittenhood. Ask what monitoring was done before placement and how the breeder approaches the risks.
Japanese Bobtail
The CFA describes Japanese Bobtails as sturdy, natural cats and says the breed has no specific health concerns in its profile. That is a breed-level summary, not a promise that an individual cat will never become ill. Its bobtail is not the same as the Manx’s truly tailless form in CFA terminology. See the CFA Japanese Bobtail profile.

American Bobtail
CFA says the American Bobtail’s diverse genetic background is not expected to produce significant health problems. It also notes that completely tailless cats occur occasionally and may have incontinence issues; this concern applies to those completely tailless individuals, not every American Bobtail. The breed is therefore best understood as bobtailed, with occasional variation. See the CFA American Bobtail profile.

TICA describes Pixiebobs as smart, active and social, and says they may fit homes with children and other pets. Its standard specifies a short tail from a two-inch minimum to a maximum at the hock, so this is a short-tailed breed rather than a truly tailless one. TICA gives a breed-profile life-expectancy estimate of 13–15+ years; it is not a population study or a guarantee for an individual cat.

TICA recommends weekly combing or brushing. The profile’s activity and social descriptions make interaction and enrichment worth considering when deciding whether a Pixiebob suits your household. See the TICA Pixiebob profile and TICA Pixiebob standard.
Toybob
TICA identifies the Toybob as a bobtailed breed. Its profile establishes its relevance to a bobtail list, but does not provide enough detail here to compare its health or household fit with the other breeds. Avoid inferring temperament or care needs from its name or tail alone. See the TICA Toybob profile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose responsibly
- Clarify tail and registry terms: ask whether the cat is tailless or short-tailed and which registry’s classification the breeder follows.
- Discuss health directly: for Manx and Cymric kittens, ask about monitoring and breeding practices related to the health concerns associated with taillessness. For any cat, ask for its health history and veterinary records.
- Match care to your routine: consider grooming needs, daily interaction, activity and time alone, along with compatibility with people and other pets already at home.
- Judge the individual: registry temperament summaries describe tendencies, not a promise about how a particular cat will behave.
Why this is not an eight-breed ranking
The title’s “perfect companions” wording suggests a universal best choice, but household fit depends on the individual cat and its home. The available registry material supports the six entries above to varying degrees; it does not establish enough comparable health and companion information for a reliable eight-breed ranking. TICA’s standards index also lists the Kurilian Bobtail and its longhair variety, but an index listing alone is not enough to assess its health or household fit.
