Verdict: Cats.com gives Evolve cat food 6.2/10, or a C+, describing an affordable brand with a useful mix of dry and wet foods but concerns about dry-food carbohydrates, limited variety, and inconsistent ingredient information for one tested variety pack. That is an editorial review score—not a veterinary consensus or proof of health outcomes. Its hands-on sample covered just one dry recipe and two wet foods, so it cannot establish how every cat will respond.

What is the review’s verdict?

In its review updated June 30, 2026, Cats.com scored Evolve 6.2/10 overall. Price was its strongest category; recall history was its weakest. The scores reflect Cats.com’s own review criteria, not an independent scientific rating.

The review’s positive case is affordability and animal proteins among the early ingredients in the recipes it discusses. Its reservations include carbohydrate-heavy dry kibble, a narrower selection than some brands, mixed customer acceptance, and an ingredient-list mismatch involving one received variety pack. Those are the reviewer’s assessments, not independent laboratory findings.

What did Cats.com actually test?

Reviewer Kate Barrington says she ordered one dry recipe and two wet foods: Salmon & Sweet Potato Stew and a Chicken & Liver Classic Crafted Meals variety pack. Her cat, Munchkin, ate the sampled foods, though the review notes that Munchkin usually prefers pâté.

  • Made in the USA with zero meat by-product meals, wheat, corn, soy or artificial ingredients so it’s great for kitties with food sensitives or allergies.

The reviewer says the ingredients for the two recipes in the received variety pack did not match the box and differed from some retailer listings. This is a meaningful reason to check the physical package, especially if your cat must avoid a particular ingredient. It is one reported product experience, not evidence that every pack or batch has the same problem.

Because the sample was small and not a controlled feeding or health study, it does not show whether Evolve improves health, suits all cats, or will be accepted by your cat.

How do the recipes differ?

Grain-Free Deboned Chicken & Chickpea dry food

The review lists chicken and chicken meal first, followed by turkey meal, peas, and chickpeas. Evolve’s product page gives the following guaranteed analysis: minimum 36% crude protein and 15% crude fat, maximum 4.5% crude fiber and 12% moisture. These are label guarantees, not typical values established by a laboratory test.

Cats.com calculates approximately 40.91% protein and 36.93% carbohydrate on a dry-matter basis from listed guarantees, while cautioning that calculated nutrient charts may not represent typical nutrient values. These are the reviewer’s calculations, not measured results. The review’s concern about carbohydrate-heavy kibble is relevant if you are choosing this dry food, but the calculation should not be mistaken for a lab analysis.

The manufacturer states that the food is formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages and lists 3 lb and 15 lb bags. Classic Crafted Meals Liver pâté

The review includes this wet-food format among its top recipes and discusses the ingredient-label discrepancy on the Chicken & Liver variety pack it received. Check the current tray or package for its full ingredient panel and nutritional adequacy statement rather than assuming that information for another wet recipe applies.

Salmon & Sweet Potato Stew in Gravy

The reviewer describes this as a wet stew and reports that its first five ingredients were animal sourced. Cats.com’s account of the tested recipe is not a substitute for checking the ingredients and adequacy statement on the exact product you buy.

Another wet option: Chicken Recipe in Savory Juices

Evolve’s official listing for Classic Crafted Meals Chicken Recipe in Savory Juices describes a different wet product from the pâté and stew recipes above. The manufacturer says it is formulated for maintenance, provides 96 kcal per 3.5 oz tray, lists minimum 10% crude protein and maximum 81.5% moisture, and identifies the product as made in the Netherlands. Do not transfer those figures or claims to the variety pack or another wet recipe.

The review’s lineup includes Classic and grain-free dry foods, a kitten formula, Crafted Meals pâtés, and stew-in-gravy foods. That roster reflects the review’s update date, not a guarantee of what is currently available.

What should you check before choosing an Evolve food?

  • Match the exact recipe to your cat. Compare its full ingredient panel with known allergies, intolerances, or dietary restrictions; don’t rely on a brand-wide description.
  • Confirm life-stage adequacy. Read the statement on the specific food. “All life stages” and “maintenance” are not interchangeable claims.
  • Compare calories and portions. Dry and wet foods differ in moisture and calorie density. Use the exact product’s calorie information and feeding directions when deciding how much to serve.
  • Check the physical label. This is particularly prudent for a variety pack, given the mismatch reported in the Cats.com reviewer’s sample.
  • Compare current value. Prices and availability change. Compare the package size and current price for the exact recipe; where calorie information is available, price per calorie can be more informative than price per bag or tray.

What do the recall references mean?

Cats.com’s review reports a connection to the 2007 melamine pet-food recall and a July 2021 recall involving certain Evolve dry cat and dog foods for potentially elevated aflatoxin. That is the review’s account of recall history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FDA notice available for the 2021 event is specifically about certain Sunshine Mills dog-food lots. It says no other Evolve products or other lot codes were affected by that announcement and marks the recall completed and terminated. It does not establish a recall of Evolve cat food. A recall reference should be checked against its date, product species, and lot codes rather than generalized to the entire brand.

How to interpret Evolve’s nutrition statements

An AAFCO formulation statement indicates that a manufacturer says a specific recipe is formulated to meet the relevant nutrient profile; it does not, by itself, demonstrate a feeding trial or a health outcome. Guaranteed-analysis percentages are minimums or maximums on a label, not a complete picture of typical nutrient content. For an individual cat—especially one with a medical condition or a prescribed diet—ask your veterinarian whether the exact recipe is appropriate.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
