Calmly watching from a perch, staying in a quiet room, or choosing to approach later are all acceptable outcomes. Prepare a safe retreat, let your cat control the distance, and build tolerance gradually only if your cat remains relaxed.
What comfort around visitors looks like
Comfort is not the same as sociability. A cat that chooses to watch guests from a safe perch may be coping well; a cat that retreats to a familiar room is also making a reasonable choice. Voluntarily approaching is another option, but it should never be the required outcome.

Fear can show up as avoiding or hiding, withdrawing, crouching low, flattening or lowering the ears, vocalizing, or sometimes spraying. These behaviors can have other explanations, so they are signs to pay attention to rather than a diagnosis. Merck Veterinary Manual describes these possible fear-related behaviors in its overview of cat behavior problems.

If visitors are stressful, make a quiet room or other low-traffic area available before the visit begins. It should have familiar essentials such as water, food, litter, bedding, and an accessible hiding place. A suitable box or an existing covered bed may work; buying a special hideaway is not necessary. Keep guests from entering the retreat, and let your cat decide whether to use it.

VCA recommends reducing exposure to triggers where possible; when guests frighten a cat, that can mean offering a quiet room with a cozy hideaway. The important features are that the retreat is familiar, accessible, and protected from visitor traffic. Do not pull your cat out of hiding or treat staying out of sight as a failed visit.
Tell visitors how to behave
Ask guests to ignore the cat at first. They should not approach, stare at, reach for, pick up, follow, or corner the cat. If the cat chooses to come closer, visitors can remain calm and give it room to leave again. A cat’s safe area is not a place for guests to enter or try to coax it out.

For a cat that can comfortably observe from a distance, a barrier and a perch can provide a supervised way to watch while preserving a retreat route. VCA describes practicing with a barrier before guests arrive and supervising if it is later removed. Skip this setup if the barrier itself makes your cat more distressed; a quiet retreat is a better choice than a viewing opportunity that removes control.

Build tolerance in small, manageable steps
Gradual behavior work is different from managing the visit in the moment. The aim is to pair a mild version of the visitor stimulus with something the cat values, while keeping the cat relaxed. VCA describes desensitization and counterconditioning as controlling stimulus intensity so the cat can relax in its presence.

- Start with the easiest version your cat can tolerate. For example, work at a greater distance, with less movement or a quieter voice, or for a shorter time. Change one aspect at a time so you can tell what your cat is coping with.
- Pair the exposure with a willing, positive experience. Offer a familiar treat or play only if your cat is comfortable enough to engage. Keep the reward at a distance the cat chooses; do not use it to lure the cat into unwanted proximity.
- Increase difficulty only while your cat stays relaxed. You might gradually adjust distance, movement, sound, or duration, one step at a time. There is no required timetable, and progress does not mean the cat must accept touch.
- Make it easier or stop if fear appears. Increase distance, reduce movement or sound, shorten the exposure, or end the practice. Do not wait for the cat to become overwhelmed before responding.
Practice should not be imposed during an actual gathering if there is no safe way to control the visitors’ behavior or the cat’s access to retreat. In that situation, focus on keeping the visit calm and making the quiet area available.
Use treats or play only if your cat wants them
The 2022 ISFM/AAFP feline-friendly environment guidelines say treats can support positive emotions when there is no medical reason to withhold them. A highly fearful cat may be too distressed to eat, though. You can offer a familiar favorite at a distance or scatter it where the cat can choose to take it; do not put food in a visitor’s hand to draw the cat closer.

When to contact a veterinarian
Seek veterinary advice if aggression toward visitors is severe, repeated, unpredictable, or difficult to manage safely. VCA advises a veterinary examination when visitor-directed aggression is hard to predict because physical causes may contribute. A veterinarian can assess health concerns and, when needed, refer you to a veterinary behaviorist to plan treatment.
