Australian Shepherds are intelligent, energetic herding dogs that need daily activity, training, human companionship, and routine coat care. They can suit an active household prepared to involve them in everyday life; they may be a poor match for a home that cannot consistently meet those needs. The breed’s name is misleading: the Australian Shepherd is an American-developed breed, not a dog whose name guarantees Australian origins.
What kind of dog is an Australian Shepherd?
The United States Australian Shepherd Association’s breed standard describes the Aussie as “an intelligent working dog of strong herding and guarding instincts.” The standard was approved May 14, 1991, and became effective January 1, 1993. The American Kennel Club (AKC) likewise describes the breed as an “only in America” breed story. Those working-dog roots help explain why many Aussies are alert, energetic, and closely engaged with their people.

Breed traits describe tendencies, not guarantees about an individual dog. An Aussie may be territorial or overprotective, and some may become destructive if regularly left without enough companionship or activity. A dog’s behavior also reflects its individual temperament, experiences, training, and health.

Is an Australian Shepherd right for me?
An Aussie is most likely to thrive with people who can make daily physical activity, training, mental challenges, and companionship part of the routine. AKC suggests activities such as hiking and canine sports, and recommends giving the dog a job or structured activity. The breed club says most Aussies need vigorous daily exercise and close human companionship.

There is no single exercise-minute target established for every Australian Shepherd. Needs vary with age, health, fitness, and behavior, so work with a veterinarian or qualified trainer to shape an appropriate routine. A home’s label, such as apartment or house, does not by itself establish whether it is suitable; the practical question is whether the dog’s needs can be met reliably.
- Consider whether you can provide regular activity and structured training, rather than relying on occasional outings.
- Think about how much time the dog would spend alone and whether your schedule allows for companionship and engagement.
- Plan for routine brushing, shedding, and other basic care.
- Account for the possibility that an individual dog may be reserved with strangers or protective of family and property.
Are Australian Shepherds good family dogs?
They can be. The breed club says properly socialized and trained Aussies can be family dogs. It also notes that they may be reserved around strangers and protective of their family and property. An Aussie’s fit with a particular family depends on the individual dog, the household’s routine, and the time available for training, activity, and supervision—not on breed reputation alone.

How much training and socialization does an Aussie need?
Training and socialization are ongoing care, not optional extras. AKC calls early socialization and obedience training “musts” for the breed. Introducing a young dog to varied people and places in a positive, appropriate way can help build confidence and guide behavior. Training also gives an intelligent, energetic dog useful ways to engage with its handler.
The breed club recommends training classes and positive methods such as praise or treats, which work well for most Aussies; it says harsh corrections are seldom necessary for this breed. Choose an approach suited to the individual dog, and ask a qualified trainer or veterinarian for help if behavior concerns arise.

Do Australian Shepherds shed a lot?
Yes. Aussies have a medium-length double coat that sheds and benefits from regular brushing. AKC recommends weekly brushing. During shedding season, it suggests using an undercoat rake every two or three days, followed by a wire brush. The breed club recommends brushing weekly down to the skin with a pin brush and using a slicker brush to remove undercoat during shedding.
An Australian Shepherd undercoat rake is a tool to consider for loosening shed undercoat; a pin brush is another option for routine care. Tool choice depends on the dog’s coat and tolerance, so use gentle strokes and stop if brushing causes discomfort. Baths are generally occasional unless the dog gets especially dirty. Regular nail trimming, ear checks, and tooth brushing are also part of routine care; follow your veterinarian’s guidance for your dog.

What health tests should an Australian Shepherd breeder provide?
AKC’s herding-group health guidance lists these Australian Shepherd parent-club screening recommendations:
- Hip evaluation
- Elbow evaluation
- Ophthalmologist evaluation
- MDR1 DNA test
- HSF4 Australian Shepherd-type hereditary cataract DNA test
- PRCD-PRA DNA test
Ask a breeder for verifiable results for the parents, an explanation of what each result means, and information about health concerns in their lines. You can also ask how the breeder selects for sound temperament and function as well as appearance. Screening can reduce uncertainty, but it does not guarantee an individual dog’s health or rule out every condition. What should an Australian Shepherd eat?
AKC advises choosing a high-quality food appropriate to the dog’s life stage, monitoring calories and body weight, and discussing home-prepared diets with a veterinarian. Training treats count toward total food intake. The guidance does not establish one food brand or formula as best for every Aussie; ask your veterinarian to help account for your dog’s age, health, and condition.
