A routine swim at a familiar pond near Irvine Beach Park left Cocker spaniel Lyric critically ill within 40 minutes of returning home. Vets Now said a severe toxic reaction, possibly after exposure to blue-green algae, was the likely explanation—but its account does not report laboratory confirmation. The case is a reminder to check water conditions each time and seek urgent veterinary help if a dog becomes unwell after swimming.

What happened to Lyric after her swim?

Vets Now reported that Lyric went swimming with four other dogs at a familiar pond near Irvine Beach Park in North Ayrshire. Within 40 minutes of arriving home, she became cold, weak and unresponsive, and developed severe diarrhoea. The clinic reported that Lyric was the only one of the five dogs to become ill; that fact neither rules out a water hazard nor establishes what caused her condition. (Vets Now)

Her owner, Amanda Smith, said: “She went from her normal, lively self to being completely lifeless in such a short space of time. I knew something was seriously wrong.” Lyric was taken to the Vets Now clinic in Kilmarnock for intensive care, IV fluids and specialist warming. Treating veterinarian Sam King described her as hypothermic, with a dangerously low heart rate and blood that had stopped clotting. After two nights of one-to-one care, she improved and later returned to competing.

Vets Now’s account, published on 10 July 2026, says the water likely triggered a severe toxic reaction and identifies blue-green algae as a likely exposure. It does not report a laboratory result confirming algae or a toxin as the cause. The account also gives an incident month that conflicts with its publication date, so the timing is not clear.

Why can blue-green algae be dangerous to dogs?

Blue-green algae is the common name for cyanobacteria. Some blooms can produce toxins, but not every bloom is toxic, and appearance alone cannot establish whether water is dangerous. Local authorities and veterinary guidance advise treating suspected affected water as a hazard to pets. (Argyll and Bute Council; PDSA)

A dog may be exposed by swimming in or drinking affected water, or by swallowing contaminated material while licking its coat. Blooms can move or change, so a spot that was familiar or looked clear on an earlier visit is not guaranteed to be safe now.

What should you do if your dog becomes unwell after swimming?

Weakness or collapse, vomiting or diarrhoea, tremors or seizures, unusual lethargy or behaviour, and breathing difficulties after time in the water need immediate veterinary attention. Do not wait to see if symptoms pass. Tell the vet where and when your dog swam and describe any signs you noticed.

If you suspect contact with blue-green algae, prevent your dog from licking its coat, rinse it with clean water and contact a veterinarian promptly. Rinsing is not a substitute for veterinary advice or treatment. Vets Now treating veterinarian Sam King said: “If your dog becomes unwell after being in water, do not wait. Get veterinary help straight away. Time is critical, and early treatment can save lives.”

How can you check whether a swimming spot is suitable?

Before letting your dog in, look for local water-quality warnings and signs such as suspicious scum, discolouration or a green sheen. Do not let your dog swim in or drink water that looks affected, or where an advisory has been issued. If you cannot establish that conditions are suitable, choose another place. (North Ayrshire Council; Argyll and Bute Council)

Water quality is only one part of the decision. Check the current strength of the water, depth and underwater hazards, how easy it is to get in and out, and whether the water is stagnant or fast-flowing. Prefer a calm, shallow place with an easy exit; avoid fast-flowing water, flooded rivers, reservoirs and rough seas. Cold water, currents, sudden depth changes, hidden objects and fatigue can all put dogs at risk. (PDSA; Dogs Trust)

What if your dog struggles in the water?

Do not enter the water to attempt a rescue. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service advises calling 999 in an emergency; if a dog has struggled in the water, seek veterinary attention because it may have inhaled water. (Scottish Fire and Rescue Service)

Dogs Trust reports 308 dog-related water incidents between 2021 and 2025, attributed to RNLI data, an average of more than one a week. A flotation device may help in a water emergency, but it does not prevent toxin exposure, make unsafe water safe or replace supervision. (Dogs Trust)
