For a general-purpose clumping clay, consider Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented; for low-tracking plant-based pellets, Tuft & Paw Really Great Cat Litter; and for non-clumping crystals with a color-monitoring feature, Purina Tidy Cats Tidy Care Alert. These serve different needs rather than making one a universal winner.
How to choose cat litter for your household
Compare litter on the traits you actually need: odor control, dust, tracking, clumping, material, scent, and how straightforward it is to clean. A litter that works well for one cat may not suit another’s texture preferences or a household’s cleanup routine. NBC Select’s September 17, 2026 guide and Good Housekeeping’s July 10, 2026 guide report editorial testing, but those results are not a universal guarantee for every home.

- Odor control: Consider how well the litter manages smell alongside how often you can remove waste and refresh the box.
- Dust: Low-dust options may be worth considering for cats with respiratory sensitivities, but a product description does not mean zero airborne dust.
- Tracking: Texture and particle size affect how much litter a cat may carry beyond the box. Larger pellets can reduce tracking but may feel unfamiliar to some cats.
- Cleanup: Clumping litter forms waste that can be removed as clumps. Non-clumping crystal litter absorbs liquid and calls for a different maintenance routine.
- Acceptance: Scent and texture both matter. A cat may avoid a litter that is unfamiliar, even if it suits the household on paper.

Best for odor control and multi-cat use
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented
Dr. Elsey’s is a sensible starting point if you want unscented, clumping clay and prioritize odor control with routine scooping. Good Housekeeping selected it as its overall pick and describes hard clumps and effective odor control in its reported testing. NBC Select also reports good clumping, while flagging substantial tracking. That makes it a less obvious choice if keeping litter off the floor is your main concern.
Boxiecat Probiotic Clumping Clay
Cats.com’s 2026 guide names Boxiecat Probiotic Clumping Clay its overall pick, describing a fast-clumping, unscented formula with probiotic-powered odor control. Keep the attribution in mind: that is Cats.com’s recommendation, not evidence that all reviewers or households would rank it first. The cited description does not establish a dust or tracking comparison for this product.

Best for low dust and respiratory sensitivity
Veterinary guidance identifies litter dust as a possible asthma trigger in cats and recommends considering low-dust litter. NBC Select reports low dust for both Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented and Tuft & Paw Really Great Cat Litter, but low-dust descriptions should not be read as a promise that no particles become airborne. If your cat has asthma or breathing symptoms, consult a veterinarian about litter and environmental triggers; VCA’s guidance on asthma and bronchitis in cats explains the condition.
Best for low tracking
Tuft & Paw Really Great Cat Litter
NBC Select reports that this plant-based tofu litter’s pellets track less and produce little dust. The larger pellet size is a meaningful trade-off: some cats may not like its feel, so a gradual transition is preferable to an abrupt switch. The cited guide also describes it as more expensive than some alternatives; no current price is established here.
Rank #2
- PREMIUM QUALITY: A combination of premium texture and granule size made with 100% bentonite clay for maximum clumping creates litter particles that are just the right size.
- LOW DUST: Ideal for cats and owners who suffer from allergies with a 99.9% dust-free and hypoallergenic litter formulation.
- HARD CLUMPING: Hard clumping medium grain clay helps prevent moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray and forms hard clumps that won't break down, making it easier to scoop.
- SUPERIOR ODOR CONTROL: Formulated for single or multi-cat households with natural ingredients to keep your home smelling clean and fresh between litter box cleanings.
- LOW TRACKING: A unique formulation of medium grain clay helps keep litter in the box where it belongs.
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented
Although NBC Select reports good clumping and low dust, it also reports that Dr. Elsey’s tracks a lot. If you already use it successfully, a mat near the box may help catch scattered litter, but the product itself is not the low-tracking choice among these picks.

Best for easy daily cleanup
Clumping litter generally makes routine waste removal easier because urine and solid waste form clumps that can be scooped out. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented is the clearest fit among these picks for someone seeking clumping clay, with NBC Select reporting good clumping and Good Housekeeping describing hard clumps in its testing.

Purina Tidy Cats Tidy Care Alert is non-clumping crystal litter, so do not expect it to be maintained like clumping clay. It absorbs liquid rather than forming clumps for removal; follow the product’s directions for its specific upkeep. The cited product information does not establish that it is faster or easier to clean overall.
Best non-clumping crystal litter with a monitoring feature
Purina Tidy Cats Tidy Care Alert
This crystal litter changes color as an observation aid. Purina says to compare crystal colors within two hours and explicitly states that the litter is not intended to diagnose, cure, prevent, treat, or mitigate disease. A color change is not a diagnosis, and a normal-looking product cannot rule out a medical problem. Discuss a change that concerns you with a veterinarian.
Rank #4

How to switch litter and keep the box clean
Introduce a new texture or scent gradually
VCA advises gradually introducing new litter because cats may reject an unfamiliar product. Mix the new litter in over time rather than replacing the old litter all at once, and watch whether your cat continues to use the box. If avoidance begins suddenly, consider both the change and possible health issues; VCA discusses litter transitions in its guide to switching to green kitty litter.
Use a routine that fits the litter type
PetMD’s veterinary-reviewed guidance recommends scooping daily, keeping litter about 1–3 inches deep, and fully changing it about monthly, with the schedule adjusted to litter type and household needs. Non-clumping crystals require their own product-specific maintenance, so follow the label rather than assuming clumping-litter routines apply.

When litter-box changes need a veterinarian
Repeated straining, frequent unsuccessful visits to the box, very small amounts of urine, crying, or blood can signal a medical problem. Contact a veterinarian rather than relying on a color-changing litter or other product to interpret symptoms. VCA’s overview of urinary tract infections in cats describes signs that warrant veterinary attention.
What veterinarians say about scent and texture
Megan Conrad, B.V.M.S., a veterinarian consultant to Good Housekeeping, says: “According to research, most cats seem to prefer a clay, unscented litter.” The quoted passage does not provide a study or statistic, so treat it as her guidance rather than a quantified finding. It is one reason unscented clay can be a reasonable first option, but an individual cat’s acceptance still matters.
