Best Cleaner Shrimp for a Saltwater Aquarium: Which One to Choose

The scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp is the best fit for fish-cleaning behavior in many saltwater tanks, while fire and peppermint shrimp suit different goals. Check predators, shelter, and stable water before choosing.

For most saltwater aquariums, the scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis) is the best match if you want a shrimp that cleans fish. It visits cleaning stations and removes parasites and dead tissue from tankmates. That recommendation depends on having stable marine water and no fish likely to eat shrimp. If you want help with Aiptasia instead, consider a peppermint shrimp—but its appetite for the pest is not guaranteed.

Which cleaner shrimp is best for your goal?

Shrimp Best fit What sets it apart Main caveat
Scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis) Fish-cleaning behavior and visible activity Fluval’s species sheet describes it cleaning parasites and dead tissue from tankmates. Avoid shrimp-eating predators; salinity stability and medication exposure matter. Fluval care sheet
Fire shrimp (Lysmata debelius) A true cleaner shrimp with a vivid red-and-white appearance It cleans fish but tends to prefer its own territory and privacy. It may spend more time hidden; provide shelter and check tankmate compatibility. PetMD
Peppermint shrimp (Lysmata species; trade names vary) Scavenging and possible Aiptasia control Bulk Reef Supply identifies Lysmata boggessi as the species to seek for Aiptasia targeting. It is not a substitute for a fish-cleaning shrimp, and Aiptasia consumption varies by individual. Confirm the scientific name with the seller. Bulk Reef Supply and PetMD

These are different roles, not a universal ranking. Choose based on what you want the shrimp to do, whether your fish might prey on it, and whether your tank offers suitable shelter and stable water. No robust head-to-head survival, fish-cleaning, or Aiptasia-control rates have been established for these options.

What a skunk cleaner shrimp does—and does not do

The skunk cleaner’s main appeal is its interaction with fish at cleaning stations. It may also scavenge leftover food, but it is not a dedicated tank-cleaning device. Some aquarium guidance notes that cleaner shrimp can steal food from corals, so observe feeding rather than assuming the shrimp will only eat waste. It does not replace routine maintenance or disease treatment.

Fire shrimp are also genuine cleaners, but their preference for territory and privacy makes them a better fit when you are comfortable with a less visible shrimp. Peppermint shrimp are scavengers; some may eat Aiptasia, but that behavior is not dependable enough to treat as guaranteed pest control.

Check compatibility before buying

Predation is a major constraint: a shrimp that fits the water conditions can still become prey. Fluval advises avoiding pufferfish, scorpionfish, wrasses, and lionfish with L. amboinensis. It lists damselfish, anemonefish, surgeonfish, butterflyfish, gobies, and blennies among compatible groups. These broad groups are not guarantees—consider the individual fish, its size and behavior, and the rest of the tank.

Fluval recommends caves, nooks, and crannies for security and cleaning-station setup. Its sheet suggests keeping this species singly or in pairs. For any shrimp, check that tankmates will not harass or eat it and that it has a place to retreat, especially while molting.

How to choose at the shop

  1. Decide the job. Choose L. amboinensis for fish-cleaning behavior, a fire shrimp for a more territorial and private cleaner, or a peppermint shrimp if you want a scavenger that may eat Aiptasia.
  2. Check the scientific name. Trade names can be imprecise, particularly for peppermint shrimp. If Aiptasia targeting is your aim, ask whether the animal is Lysmata boggessi.
  3. Review predators and shelter. Consider the actual fish in your tank, not just compatibility lists, and make sure the shrimp has secure hiding places.
  4. Confirm mature, stable water. Complete the nitrogen cycle before adding a cleaner crew, then compare your conditions with the species-specific care guidance.
  5. Plan feeding and medication carefully. Provide appropriate food rather than relying on leftover waste, and check before using chemical fish medications.

For a first choice when the goal is fish cleaning, a healthy scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp is the clearest fit—provided the tank has no likely shrimp predators and meets its care needs. For pest control, choose a peppermint shrimp only with the understanding that Aiptasia eating is individual behavior, not a promised result.
