A Toy Poodle is a small, intelligent, active dog that needs daily exercise and mental stimulation, regular training, and substantial coat care. The AKC defines the Toy variety as 10 inches or less at the shoulder; “teacup” is not a separate AKC variety.

Toy Poodles can make responsive companions, but they are not low-maintenance ornaments. Their long-term care includes grooming, dental care, careful handling, and preventive veterinary care.

What is a Toy Poodle?

The Toy Poodle is the smallest of the three AKC Poodle varieties. Miniature Poodles are over 10 inches and up to 15 inches at the shoulder, while Standard Poodles are over 15 inches. The varieties share the same general body proportions and breed standard apart from height.

The Poodle’s history helps explain why a tiny version can be so active and trainable. Poodles originated as water-retrieving dogs, and Toy Poodles retain the breed’s intelligence, athleticism, retrieving instinct, and willingness to work. They may be excellent companion dogs, but they still need something to do.

Size and appearance

Height and weight

For AKC purposes, height is measured at the highest point of the shoulders—not from the floor to the head and not to the top of a fluffy coat. A Toy Poodle must be 10 inches or less.

The AKC lists 4–6 pounds as a typical Toy Poodle weight, but this is not a universal target. Bone structure, sex, body length, muscle, and individual size all affect weight. A veterinarian should assess whether a dog is appropriately conditioned rather than judging health by a number alone.

The official standard calls for a squarely built, well-proportioned, active, intelligent, and sound-moving dog. A healthy Toy Poodle should not be selected for an excessively fragile or fine-boned appearance.

International size standards

Breed measurements differ between registries. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale’s English-language standard, published April 5, 2024, defines Toy Poodles as more than 24 cm—with a 1 cm tolerance below that measurement—up to 28 cm, with an ideal height of 25 cm. If you are comparing dogs or pedigrees from different countries, check which registry’s standard is being used.

Coat, shedding, and colors

Toy Poodles have a curly, dense coat that sheds minimally. Loose hair is often retained in the curls rather than falling around the home, but that creates a grooming obligation: trapped hair can form mats close to the skin.

A long or full coat usually needs daily brushing and combing down to the skin. Running a brush over the surface is not enough. Pay particular attention to behind the ears, the armpits, under the legs, around the collar, and anywhere harnesses rub. Severe mats can pull on the skin and may require shaving by a professional.

Many pet owners choose a shorter trim. Professional grooming is commonly arranged every four to six weeks for bathing, clipping, and nail care, although the correct interval depends on coat length and how often the dog is brushed at home. A short haircut does not eliminate grooming; the coat can still mat as it grows, and the dog still needs brushing, nail care, ear checks, bathing, and handling practice.

Are Toy Poodles hypoallergenic?

No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Some allergy sufferers tolerate Poodles better because they shed less, but reactions can come from dander, saliva, skin oils, or allergens carried in the coat. Spend time with the individual dog before bringing one home.

Accepted colors

AKC registration colors include black, white, brown, red, apricot, cream, blue, silver, gray, silver beige, and café au lait, along with several listed two-color combinations.

Color rules depend on the registry and the activity. In the AKC conformation standard, Poodles are expected to be solid-colored, and parti-colored dogs are disqualified from conformation competition. That does not mean a parti-colored dog is not a Poodle; it means the dog does not meet that conformation requirement. The United Kingdom’s Kennel Club also distinguishes solid breed-standard colors from several multicolored, non-breed-standard patterns.

Temperament

Toy Poodles are generally intelligent, agile, self-confident, active, and highly trainable. That description is a tendency, not a guarantee. Genetics, early socialization, training, health, and the home environment all shape an individual dog.

Many form close bonds with their owners. They can also be watchful and vocal. Barking may be triggered by hallway noises, visitors, boredom, fear, insufficient exercise, or distress when left alone. Treating every barking problem as stubbornness usually misses the cause.

Toy Poodles can live with children and other pets, but their small size creates a real injury risk. Children should be supervised, and chasing, grabbing, rough play, or dropping the dog should never be allowed. Interactions with large dogs also need management, even when the larger dog appears friendly.

Exercise and mental stimulation

A Toy Poodle is small enough for an apartment but not satisfied by a few hurried bathroom trips. Provide daily movement suited to the dog’s age, health, and fitness. Walks, retrieving games, interactive play, and carefully introduced swimming can all be useful.

Mental work is just as important. Good options include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Short reward-based training sessions
  • Trick training
  • Nose-work games
  • Food puzzles and scatter feeding
  • Retrieve games
  • Obedience or agility exercises adapted for a toy-sized dog

Under-stimulation can contribute to barking, chewing, restlessness, and attention-seeking. Swimming should always be supervised. Even a dog with strong swimming ability can tire, panic, or be unable to climb out of a pool.

Training and socialization

Toy Poodles usually learn quickly and can excel in obedience, agility, tracking, and other dog sports. Use consistent, reward-based training rather than intimidation. Their small size makes good manners especially important: a dog that cannot walk calmly, stop barking, or come when called is difficult to manage even if it weighs only a few pounds.

Prioritize the following skills:

  1. House-training and a reliable toilet routine
  2. Name recognition, recall, and leash walking
  3. Handling of the feet, ears, mouth, and coat
  4. Calm greetings
  5. “Leave it” and drop-it cues
  6. Alone-time training
  7. Appropriate responses to common barking triggers
  8. Safe behavior around children and larger dogs

Socialization should be gradual and positive. Expose a puppy to people, surfaces, household sounds, grooming, transportation, veterinary handling, and appropriately vaccinated dogs without forcing interaction or allowing overwhelming experiences. Carrying a puppy constantly may feel protective, but it can prevent the puppy from learning to walk, explore, settle, and behave appropriately on the ground.

Grooming routine

A practical grooming routine helps prevent matting and makes care more comfortable. For a longer coat, brush and comb daily down to the skin. Check behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and in the armpits, where mats commonly form. Introduce grooming gradually during puppyhood, trim or file nails regularly, and keep ears clean and dry. Do not insert products or tools into the ears unless a veterinarian directs you to.

  1. Brush and comb regularly; do this daily for a longer coat.
  2. Check mat-prone areas, including behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and in the armpits.
  3. Build positive grooming and handling practice gradually, starting in puppyhood.
  4. Trim or file nails regularly and keep ears clean and dry.
  5. Arrange professional clipping about every four to six weeks if the dog has a typical short pet trim; the interval depends on coat and home care.

A short haircut does not eliminate brushing: even a clipped coat can mat as it grows. Routine care still includes nail care, ear checks, bathing, and handling practice.

Health concerns

The Poodle Club of America’s health statement dated December 11, 2024, recommends three screenings for Toy Poodle breeding stock:

  1. A PRCD/PRA-prcd DNA test from an approved laboratory
  2. An annual ACVO eye examination, beginning at a minimum age of one year
  3. A patellar luxation evaluation, beginning at a minimum age of one year

These are screening recommendations, not a promise that a puppy will never develop disease.

Conditions reported in Poodles include:

  • Patellar luxation
  • Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
  • Eye disorders, including progressive retinal atrophy
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Idiopathic epilepsy
  • Sebaceous adenitis
  • Von Willebrand disease
  • Immune-mediated disorders

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease and luxating patellas are particularly relevant because the AKC reports that they are more likely in Toy and Miniature Poodles than in Standard Poodles. Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap moves out of its normal groove and may range from an intermittent problem to a condition requiring surgery. Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease involves loss of blood supply to the femoral head and is seen disproportionately in small breeds.

Dental care

Small dogs are prone to crowded teeth and periodontal disease because many teeth occupy a small jaw. Arrange regular veterinary oral examinations and establish home dental care with veterinary guidance. Do not wait for bad breath or visible tartar to become the only warning signs.

Hypoglycemia in toy puppies

Very young Toy Poodle puppies can develop hypoglycemia—dangerously low blood sugar—if they do not eat often enough or become cold, stressed, ill, or excessively active. Weakness, unusual lethargy, incoordination, tremors, collapse, and seizures are warning signs.

The AKC notes that toy puppies younger than four months may need four to five meals per day, with the schedule adjusted as the puppy matures. Follow an individualized veterinary feeding plan. A puppy that is severely weak, collapsed, seizing, or unable to eat needs immediate veterinary attention. A sugary substance may be temporary support in specific circumstances, but it does not replace emergency care.

Feeding a Toy Poodle

Feed puppies a complete and balanced food formulated for growth and appropriate for toy or small-breed puppies. Small kibble may be easier to chew. Portions should be based on calorie content, age, growth, body condition, and veterinary advice—not a generic chart alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overfeeding encourages excess weight, while underfeeding a very small puppy can contribute to hypoglycemia. Do not add calcium, vitamins, or other supplements to a complete diet unless your veterinarian recommends them.

“Teacup” Poodle versus Toy Poodle

“Teacup Poodle” is a marketing term, not an additional AKC variety. The AKC recognizes the Toy variety by a maximum shoulder height of 10 inches; it does not establish a smaller teacup class.

Extreme smallness can increase practical risks, including accidental injury and hypoglycemia, particularly during puppyhood. When choosing a dog, give greater weight to sound structure, stable temperament, health records, and responsible breeding than to the smallest advertised adult size.

How to choose a responsible breeder

Ask to see the sire’s and dam’s:

  • PRCD/PRA DNA results
  • Current ACVO eye examination results
  • Patellar luxation evaluation results

Also request veterinary records, vaccination information, a written contract, a health guarantee, details of early handling and socialization, and the breeder’s plan to take the dog back or help rehome it if circumstances change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An OFA CHIC number means that recommended screenings were completed and results were made publicly available. It does not mean every result was normal. Be cautious if a breeder refuses to show records, promises a puppy can never develop a genetic condition, focuses almost entirely on rare colors or tiny size, or will not discuss the health and temperament of adult dogs from previous litters.

Is a Toy Poodle right for you?

A Toy Poodle may be a good match if you want a very small, responsive companion and can provide:

  • Daily interaction, exercise, and mental work
  • Regular reward-based training
  • Frequent grooming and routine coat maintenance
  • Careful supervision around children and larger dogs
  • Consistent dental care
  • Preventive veterinary care and health screening
  • Preparation for vocal or separation-related behavior

Apartment living can work well, but apartment suitability is not the same as low-maintenance ownership. The dog’s body is small; its intelligence, grooming needs, and social requirements are not.

Common Toy Poodle misconceptions

Claim What is more accurate
“Toy Poodles do not shed.” They shed minimally, but loose hair can remain in the coat and cause mats.
“Toy Poodles are hypoallergenic.” No dog is completely hypoallergenic.
“They only need to be carried or taken out briefly.” They need daily exercise and mental stimulation.
“Every healthy Toy Poodle weighs exactly 4–6 pounds.” That is a typical AKC range, not a universal target or the defining standard.
“Teacup Poodle” is an official variety. The AKC recognizes Toy Poodles up to 10 inches; teacup is a marketing label.
The traditional Poodle clip is purely decorative. It developed from the breed’s retrieving work, retaining hair around joints and vital areas while clipping other areas for swimming efficiency.
A CHIC number proves a dog is disease-free. It confirms completion and publication of recommended screenings, not normal results for every test.

FAQ

How big does a Toy Poodle get?

The AKC defines a Toy Poodle as 10 inches or less at the highest point of the shoulders. The AKC lists a typical weight of approximately 4–6 pounds, but individual healthy weights vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often does a Toy Poodle need grooming?

A full coat generally needs daily brushing and combing to the skin. Many pet dogs are professionally clipped about every four to six weeks, depending on coat length and home maintenance.

Do Toy Poodles shed?

They shed minimally, but loose hair tends to stay caught in the curly coat. That can lead to mats, so low shedding does not mean low grooming.

Are Toy Poodles good family dogs?

They can be, provided children are supervised and taught to handle them gently. Their small size makes them vulnerable to accidental injury, rough play, and falls.

What health tests should a Toy Poodle breeder provide?

The Poodle Club of America recommends PRCD/PRA-prcd DNA testing, an annual ACVO eye examination beginning at least at one year, and a patellar luxation evaluation beginning at least at one year for breeding stock.

Is a teacup Poodle a separate breed?

No. “Teacup Poodle” is a marketing term. The AKC recognizes the Toy Poodle variety by a maximum shoulder height of 10 inches.
