The best freshwater aquarium plants depend on your tank’s light, dimensions, substrate, and fish. For a low-tech setup, Java fern and Anubias are useful hardscape plants; Cryptocoryne wendtii and Vallisneria add rooted growth; and Amazon sword suits tanks with room for a larger plant. Choose by growth habit and care needs rather than looking for one species that is best in every aquarium.

Compare beginner-friendly freshwater plants

Plant Best placement Planting method What to plan for
Java fern (Microsorum pteropus) Midground or accent on hardscape Attach to wood or rock with the rhizome exposed; do not bury it. Slow growth means less frequent trimming. Its leaves can show algae.
Anubias (Anubias barteri and varieties) Foreground hardscape or shaded areas; A. nana is a smaller option Attach to wood or rock with the rhizome exposed; burying it can cause rot. Tolerates low light and grows slowly, so trimming is usually less frequent.
Cryptocoryne wendtii Rooted foreground or midground, depending on variety Spread roots into the substrate and leave the crown exposed. Root nutrition may help it grow.
Vallisneria Rooted background Plant in substrate with room for growth. Choose a variety that suits the tank’s dimensions.
Amazon sword (Echinodorus spp.) Large rooted background plant Spread roots into the substrate and leave the crown exposed; consider root nutrition. Can grow large, so allow space. Some fish may chew or uproot rooted plants.
Hornwort Fast-growing planting or cover Does not require conventional root planting. Plan to trim its growth.
Salvinia or another floating plant Water surface Floats and takes nutrients from the water rather than the aquarium bed. Thin it when it shades plants below.

Beginner guides include Anubias, Java fern, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Salvinia, and Amazon sword among plants that can grow without injected CO2 when lighting and basic care are suitable. “Low-tech” does not mean no light or no plant care.

Choose plants by how they grow

For wood, rock, and shaded spots

Java fern and Anubias are rhizome plants: their thick horizontal rhizomes should remain above the substrate. Secure them to wood or rock rather than burying them. These slow growers need less frequent trimming than fast-growing plants, but algae can become visible on their leaves.

For planted substrate

Cryptocoryne, Vallisneria, and Amazon sword are rooted choices. Spread their roots through the substrate and cover the roots while leaving the crown—the point where the leaves emerge—exposed. Root tabs or nutrient-rich substrate may help rooted plants, especially larger swords.

Amazon Sword - Echinodorus Bleheri x3 Plants - Live Aquarium Plant
  • Echinodorus bleheri from South America is undemanding and beautiful, and becomes 20-50 cm tall.
  • A nutritious bottom promotes growth, but the plant needs pruning to prevent it depriving plants underneath of light.
  • Echinodorus bleheri does well even in poorly illuminated aquariums, as it grows towards the light. It is a hardy and easy solitary plant for both beginners and the more experienced with quite large aquariums. It has been sold under the name "Paniculatus".

For rapid growth or surface cover

Hornwort and floating plants can add growth without the same rooted planting approach. Fast growers may use nutrients from the water, but they also need more frequent trimming. Floating cover should be thinned if it blocks light from plants underneath.

Match the shortlist to your tank

  • Limited height or floor space: Consider a smaller Anubias such as A. nana or a Cryptocoryne variety suited to the available area; avoid assuming an Amazon sword will stay compact.
  • Hardscape-led layout: Attach Java fern or Anubias to wood or rock, keeping rhizomes exposed.
  • Want a tall background: Vallisneria or an Amazon sword can fill that role, but check the plant’s likely size against tank dimensions.
  • Fish disturb plants: Account for species that chew leaves or uproot rooted plants. Hardscape-attached plants may be a more practical choice where digging is a problem.
  • Want surface cover: Use a floating plant such as Salvinia only if you can thin it to prevent excessive shade below.

Arrange and plant them successfully

Plan the layout

Purdue Extension recommends grouping the same plant type and placing taller, denser plants toward rear corners. That keeps the layout legible and leaves shorter plants and open areas toward the front. Its general setup guidance gives 8–10 hours of light per day, but that is not a universal schedule for every aquarium, fixture, or plant mix; adjust lighting to the actual setup.

  • Weather Advisory: Live Plants Shipping Notice Please note that these are live plants, and extreme weather conditions can cause damage during transit. If your region is experiencing freezing temperatures (below 32°F) or extreme heat (above 90°F), we recommend refraining from placing an order until conditions improve.

Plant by growth form

  1. Prepare the layout: Decide which plants belong on hardscape, in the substrate, or at the surface before placing them.
  2. Secure rhizome plants: Attach Java fern or Anubias to wood or rock, leaving the rhizome exposed.
  3. Set rooted plants: Spread roots into the substrate, cover the roots, and leave the crown exposed. Add root nutrition if appropriate for the substrate and plant.
  4. Add floating plants last: Keep surface plants thinned enough that they do not shade plants below.
  5. Observe growth and fish behavior: Trim fast growers as needed and check whether fish are damaging or dislodging plants.

What “best” means for your aquarium

There is no universal ranking: the right choice changes with tank size, light, water conditions, substrate, fish, and the layout you want. The New Jersey Aquarium Society’s plant list describes its own difficulty-rating method and includes many Echinodorus types, but it is a classification reference rather than a universal or current species-care ranking.
