For fish whose diet includes vegetable matter, offer a small piece of plain zucchini that has been rinsed, briefly par-boiled, and cooled completely. Secure it if it floats or is difficult to reach, watch whether the fish eats it, and remove leftovers promptly. Zucchini is a supplement—not a replacement for the complete, species-appropriate diet your fish needs.
Which fish can eat zucchini?
Fish diets vary by species and life stage. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations notes that “the food preferred by fish varies considerably, depending on species and development stage” in its freshwater fish culture manual. A food that suits one fish should not automatically be treated as suitable for every aquarium species.

A Brooklyn Aquarium Society recipe describes bristlenose, plecos, and suckermouth catfish as vegetable-loving fish, and notes that other fish may nibble zucchini. That is hobbyist guidance, not evidence that zucchini is appropriate for every fish. Check the diet recommended for your species and its stage of development before offering it.

Keep the normal staple diet in place. For example, the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association advises feeding fancy goldfish specialised goldfish food, with vegetable matter as a supplement to regular feeds. Its advice is specific to fancy goldfish; it is not a universal feeding rule for all fish.

How to prepare and offer zucchini
- Rinse the zucchini. Use a small piece of plain zucchini.
- Cut a manageable piece. Make a small round slice or a lengthwise strip sized for the fish to reach and nibble. The published recipe does not specify an exact portion.
- Briefly par-boil it. The Brooklyn Aquarium Society recipe calls for par-boiling but gives no cooking time. Do not treat a particular duration as an established standard.
- Cool it completely. Let the piece cool before placing it in the aquarium.
- Secure it if needed. If it floats or is awkward to reach, hold it with a seaweed or lettuce clip with a suction cup, or attach it to a small rock or driftwood with a rubber band. A dedicated pleco feeder is another option described by the society; none is required if the zucchini stays accessible on its own.
- Observe and remove leftovers. Watch whether the intended fish eats it and remove uneaten zucchini promptly.
How much zucchini should you give?
Start with a modest piece rather than treating zucchini as a meal for the whole aquarium. The society recipe does not set a portion size, and the available guidance does not establish a universal zucchini amount or feeding schedule. Adjust based on the fish’s species-appropriate diet and whether it actually eats the piece.
Leftover food can break down and release toxic waste into aquarium water. OATA advises giving fancy goldfish only what they can eat within a few minutes; that timing is goldfish-specific guidance, not a universal zucchini removal interval. For zucchini, remove uneaten pieces promptly rather than relying on an unsupported fixed window.

- It does not show that all fish need or can eat zucchini.
- It does not support replacing a complete, species-appropriate diet with zucchini.
- It does not set an authoritative blanching time, portion weight, or feeding frequency.
- It does not establish that the skin or seeds must always be removed across fish species.
