To teach your dog to take a bow, start with the dog standing, lure the front end down while the rear stays raised, and reward that position. Then fade the food lure, add a hand signal, and teach the verbal cue. Prompt your dog back to standing after each bow so the movement does not turn into a down.
What a dog bow looks like
A bow begins with your dog standing. The dog lowers the chest and front legs toward the floor while keeping the hindquarters raised. The goal is a brief, comfortable position—not a full lie-down.

Teach the bow with a food lure
- Start with a stand. Work where your dog has room to move comfortably. Let the dog see a treat held in your closed fist.
- Guide the front end down. Move your fist from the dog’s nose down between the front legs and back toward the belly. Reward as soon as your dog reaches the bow position.
- Return to standing. Prompt your dog back up as soon as the bow happens, then reward. Repeat the lure and the return to standing while your dog learns the difference between a bow and a down. The American Kennel Club’s guide describes this lure-and-reset approach: Teach Your Dog to Bow.
Fade the treat and build a hand signal
Once your dog regularly follows the lure into a bow, make the same hand movement with an empty hand. Reward after your dog performs the behavior instead of showing food first. This teaches your dog to follow the signal, rather than simply tracking a visible treat.
When the empty-hand signal is reliable, use it consistently. Reward the bow, then gradually ask your dog to hold the position for a little longer. Give a reward for reaching the bow and another for holding it. Increase the hold in small steps; if your dog’s rear drops or the dog moves into a down, make the next repetition easier. Battersea outlines this progression in its guide to teaching a dog to take a bow: Teach your dog to take a bow.

Add the verbal cue
After your dog understands the movement and responds reliably to the hand signal, say a cue such as “take a bow,” then give the signal. As your dog begins to connect the words with the behavior, wait a little longer between saying the cue and showing the signal. Reward a bow performed after the verbal cue. Build the wait gradually so the hand signal does not disappear before your dog understands the words.
Choose rewards your dog values
A small food reward can make repeated practice practical, but it does not have to be a special treat. Some dogs will work for pieces of their usual kibble; choose something your individual dog values and can comfortably eat in small portions. VCA explains how food rewards can reinforce training and how to choose rewards that suit the dog: Using Predictable Rewards to Train Your Dog. A clicker is optional; it can mark the moment your dog gets the bow right, but the trick does not require one. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based methods for dog training and behavior modification, stating: “Reward-based learning offers the most advantages and least harm to the learner’s welfare.” See its position statements and handouts.

If your dog lies down instead
If your dog repeatedly continues into a down, return to an easier repetition: lure only as far as the dog can lower the front without dropping the rear, reward that attempt, and promptly guide the dog back to standing. The American Kennel Club also suggests that a hand or finger placed lightly under the belly, just below the loin, may help signal that you are asking for a bow rather than a down. Keep the touch gentle, reward the bow, and stop if your dog appears uncomfortable. Its advanced dog tricks guide includes this troubleshooting suggestion.
