Place and aim your filter return so water travels through the aquarium rather than flowing straight back to the intake. Start with gentle surface movement, then observe the tank and adjust for its layout and inhabitants. There is no single inlet-and-outlet arrangement that works best for every aquarium.
How should you position the inlet and outlet?
Think in terms of the path water takes through the tank, not a universally correct corner for each fitting. Aqueon recommends positioning the outflow to circulate water throughout the aquarium. Avoid a return that sends most of its flow directly back to the intake while leaving other areas sluggish.

Putting the return and intake at opposite ends can be a useful starting experiment if flow seems to short-circuit between them, but it is not a rule. Tank dimensions, filter design, plants, and hardscape all affect where water moves. Follow the filter maker’s installation instructions, then check circulation in the actual aquarium.

For gentle surface movement
A surface-level outlet can agitate the water without producing splashing noise in many setups. Sera’s Dr. Bodo Schnell recommends an outlet at the surface “for most situations,” while noting that suitable flow depends on the fish. Aim the outlet to disturb the surface without creating more current than the livestock can manage.

For a concentrated return
A concentrated jet can be directed just below the surface and angled slightly upward to agitate it. Aqueon describes its Water Director this way and says it can be rotated laterally. A narrow jet may be too forceful for some fish or plants; aiming it toward a wall can soften the direct push.
For broader, gentler flow
A spray bar spreads return water across a wider area than a single concentrated outlet. Aqueon describes its spray bar as providing gentle, wide-area circulation, with sections that can aim flow up or down. Mounted on a side panel, it can send water along the length of the aquarium. Check that a spray bar is compatible with your particular filter.

- 【304 Stainless Steel】Made from premium 304 stainless steel, this lily pipe inlet/outlet set ensures excellent stability in freshwater aquariums. It's robust, maintenance-free, aging-resistant, and durable. Note: Not suitable for saltwater aquariums.
- 【360° Rotatable Outlet】The outlet lily pipe features a 360° rotatable spout. Its internal rotation mechanism eliminates protruding connections, enhancing structural integrity for a smoother, more aesthetic appearance.
- 【Mini Aquarium Clip】Mini aluminum alloy aquarium pipe clips designed for glass up to 12mm thick. Includes 4 hidden screws of varying lengths and 4 thumb screws for optimal concealment and a secure fit on different glass thicknesses.
- 【Safeguards Aquatic Life】Innovative bottom slot design on the inlet pipe, featuring 15 layers x 3 sides of slots. The triangular structure enhances water circulation while effectively drawing in plant debris and fallen leaves, and preventing fry or shrimp from being sucked in, minimizing impact on aquarium inhabitants.
- 【Package Contents】1 x Stainless Steel Inlet Pipe, 1 x Stainless Steel Outlet Pipe, 2 x Aluminum Alloy Clips, 2 sets of installation accessories.
How to find and correct weak-flow areas
- Set a broad initial path. Position and aim the return so water moves beyond the outlet area, with an appropriate amount of surface agitation.
- Observe where debris settles. Repeated accumulation in one spot can indicate weak circulation. Plants and hardscape may block flow and create pockets that the return does not reach.
- Redirect or spread the return. Adjust its direction, or use a compatible spray bar to distribute flow. Recheck the affected area after the change.
- Add a circulation pump only if needed. If a sluggish area remains, a targeted powerhead may help. Aquarium Co-Op advises placing it high enough that it does not stir the substrate, and directing it toward the problem area.
Localized blue-green algae can also be a sign of stagnant conditions, according to Aquarium Co-Op’s circulation guidance. Treat it as a clue to inspect the flow and tank layout, not as proof that circulation alone is the cause.
Match current strength to fish and plants
Fish differ in the current they tolerate or need. Sera contrasts labyrinth fish, which need slow currents, with named surf-zone cichlids that need very strong currents. The right setting therefore depends on the species rather than a general rule that more flow is better.

Watch how animals and plants respond after changing the return. If fish appear overwhelmed or foliage is whipped around, reduce or redirect the jet, aim it at a wall, or spread the flow with a spray bar. Aquarium Co-Op likewise cautions that suitable circulation depends on the aquarium’s plants and animals.

Aqueon, sera, and Aquarium Co-Op provide practical setup and care guidance, not controlled comparisons proving one inlet-and-outlet geometry is best. Their guidance supports a flexible approach: create movement through the tank, check for weak-flow signs, and adjust for the livestock and layout. It does not establish one universal placement or a single turnover target suitable for every aquarium.
