Are Needlefish Freshwater Fish? It Depends on the Species

Some needlefish are freshwater fish, but most are marine. The Asian needlefish (Xenentodon cancila) is a freshwater species native to tropical Asia; the Atlantic needlefish (Strongylura marina) also enters freshwater, though it is associated with marine and brackish habitats. “Needlefish” names a family, not one species, so habitat depends on which fish you mean.

Which needlefish live in freshwater?

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says that most needlefish species are marine, while some occur in fresh water. It does not give a family-wide count or percentage of freshwater species, so there is no reliable basis for saying exactly how many are freshwater.

Example What its habitat tells you Range or size noted by the source
Asian needlefish (Xenentodon cancila) A freshwater species native to tropical Asia. USGS lists Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand in its native range, and gives a maximum size of 40 cm. Its species profile was revised March 6, 2011 and accessed in 2026. USGS species profile
Atlantic needlefish (Strongylura marina) Uses marine, brackish, and freshwater environments. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) reports that it can spawn in freshwater; it also enters rivers, sloughs, canals, and some lakes. USFWS gives its native western Atlantic range as Maine to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. NOAA lists a maximum length of 61 cm (2 ft); the publication date for that guide passage is not stated. USFWS risk summary; Florida Museum species profile; NOAA estuary guide
Needlefish family (Belonidae) overall Most species are marine, but some occur in freshwater. A needlefish found in a river is not automatically a freshwater specialist. FAO reports family-level extremes: some freshwater forms are 6–7 cm total length, while some marine species reach 2 m. These are extremes, not typical sizes. Its identification sheet is dated circa 2003. FAO identification sheet

Can a marine needlefish live in freshwater?

Some can enter freshwater, and the Atlantic needlefish is a clear example. USFWS describes it as living in marine, brackish, and freshwater environments and says it can spawn in freshwater. Florida Museum notes that it enters rivers, sloughs, canals, and some lakes. That ability to use fresh water does not make it a freshwater specialist like the Asian needlefish.

USFWS also reports an established introduced Atlantic needlefish population in the lower Cumberland River in Tennessee, following movement through a connecting canal. The agency classifies its overall risk in the contiguous United States as uncertain because information about its impacts is limited. A freshwater sighting alone therefore does not establish either the fish’s species or its ecological effect.

How to recognize a needlefish

Needlefish have long, slender bodies and elongated jaws lined with teeth. FAO distinguishes them from halfbeaks: in halfbeaks, the lower jaw alone may be extended, and they lack needle-sharp teeth on both upper and lower jaws. A long beak-like mouth can help identify a fish, but it is not enough by itself to identify a species.

For the Atlantic needlefish specifically, NOAA describes a long slender body, a bill-like mouth with prominent teeth, a green upper side, a white underside, and a bluish tail fin. Florida Museum adds finer scale and pigment traits, but species-level identification may require a clear image and expert review. Location and appearance together are more useful than habitat alone.

What about Asian needlefish outside its native range?

USGS records an established introduced population of Asian needlefish in Hawaii and identifies aquarium release as the probable introduction route. Its profile also notes a past observation of the species preying on introduced largemouth bass; that is a reported observation, not proof of a broader ecosystem-wide impact. An Asian needlefish found in Hawaii is outside its listed native range, even though the species itself is naturally freshwater.
