Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, Florida, changes character with the seasons. Its clear, 72°F spring run is open for swimming and snorkeling during the warm-season window, but in winter it becomes a protected refuge where visitors can watch hundreds of manatees from a boardwalk. Here is how to plan the right kind of visit, including current activity dates, fees, reservations, overnight options, paddling, and pet considerations.
Blue Spring State Park, at 2100 W. French Avenue in Orange City, Florida, offers two very different experiences in the same clear, spring-fed waterway. During the warm-water season, visitors can swim, snorkel, tube, paddle, and dive in water that stays near 72°F. During the colder months, the spring becomes a protected winter refuge for hundreds of manatees, and swimming is closed so visitors can watch from the boardwalk instead.

The park is a practical day trip for families and nature-focused travelers, but timing matters. Swimming is not available year-round, manatees are not animals visitors may swim with, and day-use reservations are required for visits beginning July 15, 2026.

Blue Spring is a first-magnitude spring that feeds a clear spring run before flowing into the St. Johns River. Its water remains close to 72°F, creating a striking contrast with the warmer Florida air in summer and the colder river water in winter.

That steady temperature is more than a swimming convenience. Manatees can suffer cold stress when water temperatures remain below about 68°F for extended periods, so the spring provides an important refuge during cold weather. Florida State Parks describes Blue Spring as one of the state’s largest winter gathering sites for manatees.
The park reports that the number of manatees visiting grew from about 36 when research began in the 1970s to more than 700 in 2023. That 2023 figure should not be interpreted as a guarantee that 700 animals will be present on every visit. The dependable description is “hundreds of manatees” during the winter gathering season, with daily numbers varying.
The best way to see manatees
A roughly one-third-mile accessible boardwalk follows the spring run from the St. Johns River toward the headspring. It provides viewing areas where visitors can observe manatees without entering the refuge or crowding the animals.
Do not swim, snorkel, dive, or otherwise enter the water with manatees. The winter closure exists to protect the animals while they depend on the spring’s warmer water. Even when water activities are open later in the year, visitors must follow posted wildlife-protection rules and never pursue, touch, feed, block, or separate manatees.
Winter is therefore not a lesser version of a swimming visit. It is the season when Blue Spring’s ecological role is most visible: the spring run changes from a recreation area into a protected wildlife-viewing destination.
When can you swim at Blue Spring State Park?
The park currently lists swimming, snorkeling, tubing, diving, and related water activities as open annually from April 1 through November 14. The spring and spring run generally close to water activities from November 15 through March 31 for the winter manatee period.
Those dates are not absolute guarantees. Reopening may be delayed if manatees remain in the spring because of lingering cold weather, and the scuba-diving guidance notes that closure dates may begin earlier or end later depending on manatee presence. Check the park’s current status before traveling, particularly around the April and November transition dates.

- Packaging Variability: Please note that packaging may vary for this product.
When the water is open, the clear spring run is suitable for swimming and snorkeling, and the park also lists tubing and scuba diving among its activities. The water may look tropical or “Caribbean-blue,” but that is descriptive language rather than an official color classification; the supported description is clear, crystal-clear spring water.
What to bring for warm-season snorkeling
If you plan to explore the spring run independently during the warm-season opening, a properly fitting snorkel mask set is the most relevant piece of personal gear. Clear water makes snorkeling appealing, but equipment does not change the operating season or wildlife rules. Pack only for a visit when the park has confirmed that water activities are open, and follow all posted boundaries and instructions.
For river paddling, a dry bag or waterproof phone pouch may also be useful, although those items are secondary to the park’s central snorkeling and swimming experience. Visitors who want instruction or organized equipment should distinguish guided activities from ordinary admission: Florida State Parks identifies Florida Dive Company as the operator of guided snorkel and scuba tours. Availability, prices, prerequisites, and seasonal access should be confirmed directly with the operator.
Current admission, hours, and reservations
- Address: 2100 W. French Avenue, Orange City, Florida.
- Hours: 8 a.m. until sundown, 365 days a year.
- Listed admission: $6 per vehicle carrying two to eight people; $4 for a single-occupant vehicle; and $2 for pedestrians, bicyclists, and additional passengers.
Important reservation change: Florida State Parks’ new Blue Spring day-use reservation program began July 15, 2026. The advance-reservation window opened July 8, 2026, and day-use visitors are required to have a reservation under the current program. If your visit is on or after July 15, 2026, arrange the reservation before leaving home and verify the current entry rules, fees, and availability on the official park page. Policies and prices can change.
Because Blue Spring can be especially popular during manatee season and warm weekends, a reservation is not the only planning issue. Arrive with enough time for parking, walking to the viewing areas, and changing activities if the spring closes to swimming or reaches capacity.
Other things to do beyond the spring
Hiking and the boardwalk
The spring-run boardwalk is the park’s most accessible wildlife-viewing route. For a longer walk, the Pine Island Trail is listed as 3.6 miles one way. The Sand Pine Scrub Trail is a shorter 0.25-mile loop, offering a compact way to add a land-based walk to a spring visit.
Paddling and river activities
Canoes and kayaks may be rented through Blue Springs Adventures for exploring along the St. Johns River. The concession also provides water-activity rentals, food, a gift shop, and camp-store services.

St. Johns River cruises
The park identifies St. Johns River Cruises and Tours as operating daily narrated cruises at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Current fees and availability should be checked before booking because cruise schedules and capacity can change. A cruise is a useful alternative for visitors who want to experience the river without renting a canoe or kayak.
Fishing, picnicking, and family facilities
Blue Spring also has picnic facilities, a playground, fishing access on the St. Johns River, a concession, and overnight accommodations. These options make it possible to build a full park day around the spring rather than treating the visit as a quick swim stop.
Camping and cabins
For overnight stays, the park lists 51 campsites within walking distance of the spring and six two-bedroom cabins. The listed base rates are:
- Camping: $24 per night plus tax.
- Cabins: $95 per night plus tax.
- Reservation fee: $6.70 and nonrefundable.
- RV utility fee: $7 per night in addition to the camping rate.
Cabins require a two-night minimum stay. Treat these as listed rates rather than guaranteed prices: confirm the total cost, taxes, inventory, cancellation terms, and current reservation rules when booking. The official Florida State Parks reservation system is the appropriate place to check day-use, camping, and cabin availability.

Blue Spring is a wildlife refuge as well as a recreation site. If you plan to bring a dog or another pet, check the park’s current pet rules, permitted areas, leash requirements, and accommodation restrictions before arrival. Do not assume that a pet may accompany you onto every boardwalk, swimming area, trail, cabin, or campground facility. Keep pets away from the water’s edge and wildlife-viewing areas unless current park rules explicitly allow access.
This is especially important in winter, when manatees gather in concentrated numbers. A quiet, controlled viewing environment benefits both the animals and visitors.

Blue Spring’s history
The park’s historic 1872 Thursby House recalls the era when Blue Spring Landing served as a St. Johns River steamboat hub. Much later, a 1971 episode of Jacques Cousteau’s The Underwater World brought wider attention to Blue Spring’s manatee refuge and helped influence Florida’s decision to acquire the property.
That history explains why the park feels like more than a swimming hole. The same spring has been a transportation landmark, a filmed natural attraction, a public recreation area, and a critical warm-water refuge for manatees.

- Choose your season: manatee viewing in winter or swimming and snorkeling during the warm-season opening.
- Never plan to swim with or touch manatees.
- Check whether the spring is open to water activities; the standard April 1–November 14 dates can change with manatee presence and weather.
- For visits beginning July 15, 2026, obtain the required day-use reservation before arrival.
- Confirm current admission, activity fees, tour schedules, and capacity rules.
- Bring a snorkel mask set only for an approved warm-season water visit.

Blue Spring State Park is at its most memorable when visitors plan around its seasonal identity. Come in the warm months for clear-water recreation, or come in winter to see why the spring is protected as one of Florida’s major manatee refuges. Either way, the water’s steady 72°F temperature is the feature connecting the park’s two very different experiences.
