Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs are both small, sociable, short-coated companion dogs—but they are not interchangeable. A Boston Terrier is usually lighter, leggier, more animated, and more interested in brisk play and training. A French Bulldog is typically more compact, muscular, indoor-oriented, and physically limited by its heavy build and very short muzzle.

The better choice depends less on which breed is “easier” in general and more on your climate, activity level, tolerance for breed-specific care, and the individual dog’s breathing, conformation, health records, and temperament. Both breeds are brachycephalic, so neither is a suitable choice for strenuous exercise or hot, humid conditions.

Appearance: similar size, different silhouette

The quickest way to tell the breeds apart is to look at the overall outline. Boston Terriers tend to look lighter and more athletic, with longer-looking legs, a compact body, a short tail, and the familiar black-and-white or other contrasting “tuxedo” pattern. Their head is square, their muzzle is short, and their eyes are large and round.

#1 Best Overall
Wags & Wiggles Dual-Sided Dog Grooming Glove, One Size, 1 Count
  • 2-IN-1 DUAL SIDE GROOMING GLOVE — RUBBER BRUSH AND VELOUR FUR REMOVER: One glove, two grooming tools. The rubber bristle side brushes, massages, and loosens fur during grooming or bathing. Flip to the velour side to remove fur from clothing.
  • RUBBER BRISTLE SIDE FOR WET OR DRY BRUSHING AND MASSAGING: The paw-shaped silicone and rubber bristle side can be used dry for regular brushing and massaging, or wet during bath time for a deeper lather, scrubbing, and coat cleanse.
  • VELOUR SIDE FOR LIFTING FUR FROM CLOTHING AND FURNITURE: The velour side of this grooming glove works as a lint-style fur remover — use it to sweep loose pet hair from clothing, upholstery, furniture, and other fabrics between grooming sessions.
  • FLEXIBLE RUBBER PAW SHAPE — COMFORTABLE FIT FOR GROOMING: The flexible, paw-shaped rubber brush conforms to your pet's body for an effective, comfortable groom. Note: this glove is one size and may run slightly large for smaller hands.
  • WORKS ON DOGS AND CATS — SHORT OR LONG COATS: The rubber grooming side works effectively on dogs and cats with a range of coat lengths. Short-haired breeds especially benefit from the rubber bristle action for undercoat removal and shine.

French Bulldogs look heavier through the front end. They have a compact, muscular body, a broad square head, a very short nose, prominent facial wrinkles, and upright ears commonly described as bat ears. Their characteristic shape is part of the breed standard, but more exaggerated short-faced conformation can increase health risk. The Boston Terrier Club of America and French Bull Dog Club of America breed standards describe the defining features of each breed.

Temperament and personality

Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are commonly friendly, alert, cheerful, sociable, and eager to interact with their people. Many are enthusiastic about games, learning tricks, and joining household activities. They can be a good fit for someone who wants a small dog with a bit more spark and play drive than a purely indoor companion.

That does not mean every Boston Terrier is calm, quiet, or naturally obedient. Individual temperament is influenced by genetics, early socialization, training, exercise, and the way the household manages excitement. A Boston may also become bored or noisy if it receives little interaction.

French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are generally affectionate, playful, social, adaptable, and strongly companion-oriented. Many are content to stay close to their owners and can adapt well to apartment living or a smaller home. They often enjoy short play sessions and training, but they usually do not need the same amount of outdoor activity as a more athletic small breed.

“Low exercise” does not mean “no exercise.” French Bulldogs still need age-appropriate movement, basic training, enrichment, and careful weight control. Excess weight places additional stress on breathing, joints, and heat tolerance.

Which is better with children and other pets?

Both breeds can live successfully with children and other dogs when the individual dog is well socialized and interactions are supervised. A breed label cannot guarantee patience or compatibility. Children should be taught not to climb on, corner, grab, or disturb a dog while it is eating or sleeping, and every dog should have a quiet retreat.

The Boston Terrier may suit a family wanting more interactive play. The French Bulldog may suit a family wanting a more relaxed companion. In either case, choose the individual dog—not just the breed—based on observed temperament and a responsible breeding or rescue history.

Exercise: the Boston is more active, but neither is an endurance dog

A Boston Terrier often has more capacity and enthusiasm for brisk walks, play, training games, and some appropriately managed canine activities. Some need a walk once or twice daily plus additional play or mental stimulation. Others are satisfied with less. The dog’s breathing, fitness, age, and weather should determine the pace.

Many French Bulldogs can manage a short daily walk or an outdoor play session, supplemented by indoor enrichment. They are not built for long-distance running, strenuous hikes, or sustained activity in warm weather. Their front-heavy build also means they cannot be considered reliable swimmers.

Both breeds are brachycephalic. Their shortened skulls and muzzles can contribute to brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, or BOAS. The condition can interfere with airflow and reduce a dog’s ability to exercise and cool itself. A dog that breathes noisily, tires quickly, gags, struggles to recover, or collapses during activity needs veterinary assessment—not simply more conditioning.

Heat and humidity: a serious limitation for both breeds

Short-faced dogs have less room for efficient airflow and evaporative cooling. Boston Terriers can have breathing difficulty in excessive heat or humidity, even if they appear eager to play. French Bulldogs generally require an even more conservative plan because their compact, front-heavy conformation and very short muzzles can make heat and exertion particularly hazardous.

  • Exercise during the coolest parts of the day.
  • Keep activity short and allow frequent breaks.
  • Use shade, air conditioning, and readily available water.
  • Avoid forced running, intense fetch, and strenuous exercise in warm or humid weather.
  • Never assume a dog is safe because it has exercised successfully in the past.
  • Stop immediately for distress, weakness, excessive or abnormal panting, stumbling, vomiting, or collapse and seek veterinary help urgently.

French Bulldogs should never be left unattended around pools, tubs, ponds, or other water. Their front-heavy bodies make swimming unreliable, and a flotation device is not a substitute for direct supervision.

What does the research say about Boston Terrier BOAS?

A 2024 Cambridge BOAS study of 104 Boston Terriers classified 37.5% as Grade 0, 35.6% as Grade 1, 26.0% as Grade 2, and 0.96% as Grade 3. In that sample, Boston Terriers were less severely affected than the Bulldog breeds included in the comparison. The researchers also found that more extreme conformation increased risk within Boston Terriers.

This is a relative finding, not a clean bill of health for the breed. A Boston Terrier can still have clinically important airway disease, and an individual dog’s breathing ability matters more than the breed’s average ranking.

Grooming and routine care

Neither breed has a long coat or a high-maintenance haircut. Weekly brushing with a soft-bristle brush, rubber grooming mitt, or hound glove helps remove loose hair and distribute skin oils. Both typically need bathing only occasionally, unless they get dirty. Nails should be trimmed regularly because overgrown nails can affect comfort and movement.

For routine brushing, a rubber dog grooming mitt can be a practical option for either breed. It is a grooming tool, not a treatment for skin disease or breathing problems; persistent itching, odor, redness, or hair loss warrants veterinary advice.

Extra French Bulldog care

French Bulldog facial folds need regular inspection, gentle cleaning when necessary, and careful drying. Moisture and trapped debris can contribute to irritation or infection. Persistent redness, discharge, odor, pain, or recurrent problems should be evaluated by a veterinarian rather than managed indefinitely with wipes.

Prospective French Bulldog owners should budget time for French Bulldog facial-fold cleaning supplies and learn the correct cleaning routine before bringing the dog home. Products should be used gently and according to veterinary guidance.

Extra Boston Terrier care

Boston Terriers’ prominent eyes deserve routine observation. Contact a veterinarian about redness, squinting, cloudiness, discharge, rubbing, or any apparent injury. Their eyes can be vulnerable to irritation and trauma.

For either breed, regular nail care is part of normal ownership. A small-dog nail trimmer may help owners maintain the nails at home, but a groomer or veterinary team can demonstrate safe technique if the dog is nervous or the nails are dark.

Health differences and veterinary considerations

Both breeds can have concerns related to short-face anatomy, eyes, heat tolerance, and anesthesia. This does not mean every Boston Terrier or French Bulldog will develop these conditions. It does mean that prospective owners should investigate breathing, health testing, and veterinary history rather than choosing a puppy based only on appearance.

French Bulldog concerns

French Bulldogs may be affected by breathing problems, eye disease, skin allergies or autoimmune skin disorders, abnormal vertebrae, disc degeneration, patellar problems, and weight-related limitations. Their airway anatomy can also make heat exposure, strenuous exercise, and some anesthetic procedures more complicated.

Boston Terrier concerns

Boston Terriers warrant particular attention to eye disease, deafness, patellar luxation, early-onset hereditary juvenile cataracts, and airway function. Their lighter, leggier shape does not make them immune to BOAS or heat-related emergencies.

Recommended breeder screening

Health testing cannot guarantee a problem-free puppy, but it is an important way to reduce avoidable risk and assess the parents. The American Kennel Club lists the following recommended evaluations:

Rank #4
Pet Hair Removal Glove with 255 Silicone Tips for Dogs & Cats, Right Blue
  • Gentle Grooming Massage – Brush away mats, light tangles and loose undercoat with a soft, flexible groomer that turns petting into an effective deshedding tool
  • Pet Hair Removal Glove – Removing hair not only helps reduce flying hair in the air, it stimulates skin oils and improves coat softness and shine
  • Versatile Wet or Dry Use – Great for dogs and cats with short, medium, curly, or long coats, this pet hair removal glove can be used daily or during bath time for an even deeper clean
  • Adjustable Comfort Fit – Flexible and breathable, our cat and dog brush fits most pet owners thanks to the adjustable wrist strap; better yet, it’s machine washable
  • What You Get – Every order comes complete with 1 right-hand pet grooming glove
  • French Bulldog breeding stock: patella, hip, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations.
  • Boston Terrier breeding stock: patella evaluation, ophthalmologist evaluation, and BAER testing for hearing.

The Boston Terrier Club of America also describes annual eye examinations, patellar-luxation examination, BAER testing, and a DNA test for early-onset hereditary juvenile cataracts in its health statement.

Ask for verifiable records rather than accepting “the parents are healthy” as proof. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals’ CHIC program can help: CHIC certification indicates that a dog completed the disease screenings recommended by its parent club and that the results are publicly available. CHIC status confirms completion and disclosure of the required tests; it does not mean every test result was normal.

Questions to ask a breeder

  1. Which parent-club-recommended tests were completed for both parents?
  2. Can you provide the registered names or OFA records so the results can be verified?
  3. Do either parent or close relatives have breathing problems, airway surgery, exercise intolerance, or heat-related emergencies?
  4. Has either parent had difficulty with anesthesia or recovery?
  5. What eye, hearing, orthopedic, skin, or spinal problems have appeared in the family?
  6. What veterinary examination and health guarantee accompany the puppy?

Do not select the puppy with the flattest face, smallest nostrils, or most exaggerated features as a sign of quality. A veterinary examination should be part of any acquisition decision, and a pre-purchase examination is especially valuable for these breeds.

Which breed is easier to own?

For a low-exercise urban lifestyle, the French Bulldog may be easier day to day—but not necessarily easier medically. It often needs less outdoor exercise and adapts well to apartment life. At the same time, owners must manage heat, breathing, body weight, water safety, facial folds, and potentially complex veterinary care.

For an owner who wants a more active small companion, the Boston Terrier may be the easier fit. It often offers more enthusiasm for walks, play, and training while generally requiring less skin-fold maintenance. It still needs careful heat management, eye monitoring, and attention to airway function.

Neither breed is universally healthier, quieter, cheaper, or simpler. Climate, access to veterinary care, insurance terms, the dog’s conformation, and the individual’s health history can matter more than the breed name.

Cost planning and pet insurance

Before choosing either breed, make a realistic veterinary budget for routine care and unexpected problems involving the airway, eyes, joints, skin, or anesthesia. If you are considering insurance, compare pet insurance for a French Bulldog or Boston Terrier before bringing home a puppy. Compare the actual policy documents, not just the monthly premium: coverage, deductibles, reimbursement limits, waiting periods, breed-related exclusions, bilateral-condition rules, and pre-existing-condition definitions vary by provider and location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In particular, ask how the policy treats signs or diagnoses that existed before enrollment and whether airway-related conditions are excluded. Availability and terms are state-specific and can change, so verify the current documents directly with the provider. Insurance cannot retroactively cover a pre-existing condition.

Which breed should you choose?

Choose a Boston Terrier if:

  • You want a small, social dog with more potential for brisk walks, active play, and training games.
  • You can provide regular interaction and mental stimulation.
  • You live in a climate-controlled environment and will carefully limit heat and strenuous exercise.
  • You prefer to avoid routine facial-fold care but are prepared to monitor the eyes and airway.
  • You are willing to evaluate the individual dog’s breathing and conformation rather than assuming the breed is athletic.

Choose a French Bulldog if:

  • You want a compact, affectionate indoor companion.
  • You prefer short walks and brief play sessions over extended outdoor activity.
  • You can consistently manage weight, facial-fold hygiene, heat avoidance, and water safety.
  • You understand that a low-energy lifestyle does not remove the breed’s respiratory and veterinary considerations.
  • You will choose based on health records and functional breathing—not the most exaggerated facial features.

Bottom line

The Boston Terrier is generally the lighter, leggier, more playful choice; the French Bulldog is generally the stockier, more indoor-oriented choice. The Boston may better suit an active household seeking a small dog for play and training, while the Frenchie may better suit someone wanting a close companion with modest exercise needs.

But both are brachycephalic breeds. Neither should be exposed to strenuous exercise or hot, humid weather, and neither should be chosen without investigating breathing, conformation, health testing, and veterinary history. The best match is the individual dog whose health and temperament fit your household—not simply the breed that looks more appealing in photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Boston Terriers healthier than French Bulldogs?

Neither breed is automatically healthy, and a direct ranking can mislead. Both can have airway, eye, heat-tolerance, orthopedic, and anesthesia concerns. French Bulldogs often require especially careful management because of their compact, heavily built, very short-faced conformation, while Boston Terriers can still develop clinically important BOAS and eye or hearing problems. Evaluate the individual dog, health records, conformation, and veterinary examination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which breed is better for an apartment?

Both can adapt to apartment living. French Bulldogs often need less outdoor exercise, while Boston Terriers may need more daily play and training. Apartment suitability also depends on heat control, access to safe walking areas, noise level, stairs, elevator access, and whether the owner can provide enrichment.

Can Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs go running?

They should not be treated as running or endurance breeds. Both are brachycephalic and may struggle to breathe or cool themselves during strenuous exercise. Short, carefully monitored activity in cool conditions is safer, but a veterinarian should assess any dog that shows exercise intolerance.

Do French Bulldogs need more grooming than Boston Terriers?

Their coats are similarly easy to maintain and generally need weekly brushing. French Bulldogs usually require more hands-on daily-care management because facial folds need inspection, gentle cleaning when needed, and thorough drying. Boston Terriers’ prominent eyes also need regular observation.

What health tests should a breeder provide?

For French Bulldogs, look for patella, hip, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations. For Boston Terriers, look for patella and ophthalmologist evaluations plus BAER hearing testing; the breed club also describes annual eye exams and DNA testing for early-onset hereditary juvenile cataracts. Verify records through appropriate public databases where available, and ask specifically about breathing and anesthesia history.
