“Bass fish” does not have one universal French translation. If you mean sea bass, the usual French word is bar. If you mean the North American freshwater fish—such as largemouth or smallmouth bass—use black-bass, perche noire, or, especially in Canadian French, achigan.
The French translation depends on which bass you mean
English uses bass for several different fish. French distinguishes them more clearly, so translating every instance of “bass” as bar can produce the wrong result.

How to say “largemouth bass” or “smallmouth bass” in French
If you mean the North American freshwater sport fish, do not normally translate it as bar. The established French terms include:
- black-bass — commonly used in France and in fishing contexts;
- perche noire — literally “black perch,” an established French name;
- achigan — especially associated with Canadian French, although it is also recognized more broadly.
For example:
- I caught a largemouth bass. → J’ai pêché un black-bass.
- I caught a largemouth bass. → J’ai pêché un achigan.
When species-level accuracy matters, add the specific species or use the name preferred in the relevant country or fishing community. The word achigan is not a universal translation for every English fish called “bass”; it points specifically toward freshwater black bass and has a strong Canadian association.

The Larousse definition of achigan identifies it as the Canadian common name for black-bass. The CNRTL entry for achigan also describes the freshwater fish and gives black-bass and perche noire as names used in France.
What does perche mean?
Perche means “perch” in French, but Larousse gives it as a broad translation for the freshwater sense of English bass. You may therefore see perche d’eau douce (“freshwater perch”) in a general translation context.
However, perche by itself can be too general if you are identifying a particular fish. For North American largemouth or smallmouth bass, black-bass, perche noire, or achigan will usually communicate the intended fish more accurately.

Quick decision guide
- Is it a marine fish served in a restaurant or sold as seafood? Use bar. In some Mediterranean contexts, loup or loup de mer may also be used.
- Is it a largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, or another North American black bass? Use black-bass, perche noire, or achigan.
- Does the English source simply say “freshwater bass” without identifying the fish? A broad dictionary translation may use perche, but specify the species if you can.
- Is the audience in Quebec or elsewhere in Canada? Achigan may sound especially natural, while black-bass and perche noire remain useful alternatives.
Why “bass” should not always become bar
Bar is correct for sea bass, but a fishing reference from the United States usually means a freshwater black bass. Translating “I caught a bass” as J’ai pêché un bar could therefore suggest that the speaker caught a marine fish rather than a largemouth or smallmouth bass.
Likewise, translating every bass as achigan is too broad. The term is associated with black bass and is particularly common in Canadian French, whereas a seafood menu in France will generally use bar.

Can perche mean bass in French?
Yes. Larousse gives perche for the broad freshwater sense of English bass. For a precise species identification, however, use the specific name when known.
The Bottom Line
Use bar for sea bass. Use black-bass, perche noire, or achigan for North American freshwater bass. Because English “bass” is ambiguous, the fish’s habitat, species, and regional French usage determine the best translation.
