A coyote grabbed Brittany Furlan and Tommy Lee’s dachshund, Neena, in the couple’s Woodland Hills backyard in September 2024. Security footage shows Furlan chasing after the coyote, but not the rescue itself: Furlan said she climbed a wall and pulled Neena from the animal’s mouth. Reports said Neena was safe.
What the video shows
The Los Angeles Times reported that a coyote entered the yard around 1 p.m. on September 24, approached the dogs near the pool, and took Neena. Furlan chased after it and returned with the dog.
The footage does not show Furlan pulling Neena free. Furlan said she climbed up the wall and grabbed Neena out of the coyote’s mouth. CBS Los Angeles also reported that she reached the coyote outside the security camera’s view.
Neena was reported safe
Reports identified Neena as a dachshund and said she was safe after the encounter. Furlan’s account describes how she got the dog back; the available reporting does not establish the coyote’s motive or condition.

Why coyotes may enter residential areas
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) says coyotes are native to California and can be seen in rural, residential, and urban areas. They may eat pet food, human food, and trash, and encounters can put pets and people at risk.
The incident does not establish that coyotes are generally becoming more aggressive or hungry. Furlan described the animal in her own account, but the reporting does not establish a broader trend or the coyote’s motive.

How to reduce risk to dogs
CDFW recommends these steps to reduce opportunities for coyote encounters:
- Supervise small pets outdoors. Do not leave small pets outside unattended.
- Bring pets inside at night.
- Keep dogs leashed on walks. A leash helps keep a dog close, but it cannot guarantee protection or show that this backyard incident would have been prevented.
- Remove food attractants. Do not leave pet food outdoors, and keep human food and trash inaccessible to wildlife.
What to do if a coyote approaches
CDFW advises people to keep a safe distance, back away slowly, keep small children and pets close, make loud noise, make themselves look larger, and allow the coyote to leave the immediate area. Do not treat Furlan’s rescue as a course of action to imitate. If a coyote makes contact, CDFW advises: “If a coyote makes contact, fight back! Then call Animal Control or 9-1-1.”
