Ultrasonic Sound and Dogs: Effects, Risks, Whistles, and Deterrent Devices

Dogs can hear some sounds that people call ultrasonic, but their reactions to whistles and deterrent devices vary. A 1990 experiment found that none of the tested devices repelled every dog under any tested frequency or sound-pressure level. Available evidence supports caution about aversive responses and prolonged loud-noise exposure, but does not establish that ordinary consumer ultrasonic devices cause permanent hearing damage.

If a dog shows persistent fear or distress around sounds, remove a suspected source when safe and seek veterinary guidance. A whistle may be used as a training cue, but it is not an automatic command or a proven universal repellent.

What “ultrasonic” means when dogs are involved

Ultrasound is sound above 20,000 hertz (Hz), the conventional upper limit of human hearing cited in a 2020 review by Barber and colleagues. The review reports that dogs can hear up to 45,000 Hz. These are literature figures, not exact limits for every person or dog.

A whistle described as “silent” may be inaudible to many people while still audible to a dog. “Silent” is a human-centered description, not proof that no animal can hear the sound.

How dogs respond to whistles and deterrents

Responses vary by dog and by the sound’s frequency, amplitude, and other characteristics. A dog may show no clear response, curiosity, surprise, ear-pricking, or aversion.

In a 1990 experiment, Blackshaw and colleagues tested three ultrasonic units on 15 dogs. The study abstract reports that no device repelled all dogs at any tested frequency or sound-pressure level; several dogs showed aversive behavior toward two units and a commercial alarm. The experiment was limited to its sample, devices, and conditions, so it cannot establish how every modern product works.

A 2020 review also describes a separate experiment in which 120 dB ultrasonic sweeps expelled dogs from tested areas. This was a high-intensity experimental finding, not evidence supporting routine consumer use.

Behavioral aversion is not the same as hearing injury

A dog’s fearful or avoidant response is not, by itself, proof of physical hearing damage. Conversely, a dog that shows no obvious reaction does not prove that a sound is inaudible or safe for unlimited exposure.

A 2012 kennel study by Scheifele and colleagues measured equivalent noise levels of 100–108 dB SPL in two kennel environments and reported measurable hearing change in all 14 dogs tested after six months. That study concerns sustained kennel noise in its study settings, not ultrasonic whistles or typical household deterrents.

The available evidence does not establish that ordinary consumer ultrasonic devices cause permanent hearing damage. Avoid close-range or repeated exposure, and do not assume that a product is harmless simply because people cannot hear it.

Comparing whistles, deterrents, and veterinary support

Option Intended use Evidence and considerations
Ultrasonic whistle A training cue, such as for recall It may be audible to dogs, but the dog must learn its meaning. Introduce it carefully and watch the dog’s response.
Ultrasonic deterrent Discourage or repel dogs Responses vary. In one 1990 experiment, no tested unit repelled every tested dog at any tested frequency or sound-pressure level.
Veterinary assessment and behavior support Assess persistent sound fear or anxiety The FDA describes noise aversion as fear-based; behavioral modification may help, and medication may be appropriate in some cases under veterinary care.
Canine hearing protection Reduce exposure to loud noise A 2026 controlled study offers early evidence for the tested device and conditions. It does not establish everyday comfort or protection from ultrasonic deterrents.

Using a whistle as a training cue

An ultrasonic whistle does not inherently mean “come,” “sit,” or “stop barking.” The dog learns what it predicts through consistent training. If you choose to use one, treat it as an optional cue, not as a punishment or universal repellent.

  1. Choose a quiet setting and create distance. Do not begin beside the dog’s head, and let the dog move away.
  2. Use a brief cue. Avoid a loud or repeated blast.
  3. Pair the cue with a reward. Follow it promptly with something the dog values.
  4. Practice before adding difficulty. Gradually add distance or distractions only as the dog responds comfortably.
  5. Stop if the dog shows distress. Do not force the dog to remain near the sound.

A dog that ignores a whistle is not necessarily deaf. The cue may be unfamiliar, the dog may be distracted or too far away, or the dog may have a hearing change. Informal home tests are not diagnostic.

Sound fear and veterinary care

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes noise aversion as a fear-based behavioral problem. It says behavioral modification may help and medication may be appropriate in some cases under veterinary care. Its May 6, 2026 announcement says Tessie (tasipimidine oral solution) was approved for canine noise aversion and separation anxiety and is prescription-only. This is background on available clinical care, not a recommendation for a particular dog.

Seek veterinary guidance if sound-related fear is persistent, severe, or accompanied by possible ear pain, hearing change, balance problems, or other medical signs. A veterinarian can assess the dog and discuss behavior support and treatment options.

What a canine hearing-protection study does and does not show

A 2026 study evaluated a canine hearing-protection device in 21 anesthetized dogs using click stimuli. With the device, 20 of 21 dogs had thresholds above 70 dB nHL, the study’s maximum tested level. The result is promising for sound reduction under those controlled conditions, but it does not prove field effectiveness, comfort during ordinary activity, or protection against ultrasonic deterrents specifically.

Device claims and regulation

In the United States, FDA explains that animal devices do not require premarket approval. Manufacturers and distributors are responsible for assuring safety, effectiveness, and proper labeling; FDA may take regulatory action if an animal device is misbranded or adulterated. Do not assume an ultrasonic deterrent is “FDA-approved” as a category.

FAQ

Can dogs hear ultrasonic sound?

Yes. A 2020 review defines ultrasound as above 20,000 Hz and reports that dogs can hear up to 45,000 Hz. These figures are not exact limits for every individual dog.

Are ultrasonic dog whistles really silent?

Not necessarily. A whistle may be inaudible to many people while still audible to a dog. “Silent” does not mean inaudible to animals.

Do ultrasonic dog deterrents work on every dog?

No. In a 1990 experiment, none of the tested units repelled all 15 dogs at any tested frequency or sound-pressure level. That finding is limited to the devices and conditions studied, but it does not support a claim of universal effectiveness.

Can an ultrasonic dog repeller hurt a dog’s hearing?

The supplied evidence does not establish that ordinary consumer ultrasonic devices cause permanent hearing damage. Research on sustained loud kennel noise documents hearing changes, but that is not the same exposure as a typical ultrasonic deterrent. Avoid close-range or repeated exposure and seek veterinary guidance about concerns.

What should I do if my dog is afraid of sounds?

Where safe, remove or switch off a suspected source and observe the dog. If the fear is persistent or severe, contact a veterinarian; behavioral modification may help, and medication may be considered under veterinary care.
