Can a Betta Fish Live Alone? What They Need to Thrive

Yes. A betta can live alone, and it generally should not share a tank with another betta. These fish are territorial, and fights can cause serious injury or death. Living alone does not mean living in a bare bowl, though: a betta still needs swimming space, stable warm water, and places to explore and shelter.

Do betta fish get lonely?

There is no need to add another betta for company. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine says bettas are unlikely to get lonely in their tanks, while noting that a small tank may leave them bored. That distinction matters: companionship is not a substitute for a suitable habitat, and a second betta can create a serious social risk.

Fish behavior can be described and studied, but it should not be assumed to match human feelings. The practical takeaway is to provide a good environment rather than a fish companion.

Why shouldn’t bettas share a tank with another betta?

Bettas are territorial. The CDC’s fish-care guidance warns that male bettas may fight. The University of Illinois veterinarian advises against housing bettas together because fighting can injure or kill them. This applies even when a tank looks spacious: a 2024 behavioral study found that larger aquaria reduced approaches and aggressive displays between paired males, but did not reduce attacks. The study’s largest paired-fish tank was 378 L, and its results do not establish any tank size as a guarantee of peaceful cohabitation.

AQUANEAT Fish Tank, 1 Gallon Betta Fish Tank, Small Aquarium Kit with LED Light and Water Filter Pump
  • Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
  • Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
  • Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
  • Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
  • Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)

How much space and enrichment does one betta need?

Recommendations differ because the sources address different contexts and study conditions; they should not be treated as one settled universal minimum.

Source and context Finding or recommendation
University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine; veterinarian guidance for home care A 5-gallon or larger aquarium, with low-flow filtration.
2024 Animal Welfare study; individual-fish swimming comparisons Males in 0.5 L bowls spent less time swimming than fish in larger aquaria. The study used individual-fish volumes including 0.5 L, 10 L, 38 L, and 208 L; its authors said at least 10 L was needed for full expression of swimming in their experimental conditions.
2024 “Life beyond a jar” study; 13 male fish rotated through five housing conditions The authors recommend home tanks larger than 5.6 L. Fish were more active and spent less time resting and performing the study’s defined abnormal behaviors in a furnished 19.3 L tank than in smaller conditions. The 19.3 L barren tank also showed more of certain abnormal behaviors than the furnished 19.3 L tank.

The studies point to two useful principles without proving a single threshold that fits every setup: very small containers can restrict swimming, and furnishings can influence behavior. The 2024 Animal Welfare study found that enriched containers elicited more swimming in individually housed males. In the separate 13-fish study, the furnished large tank included gravel, live plants, and refuges.

  • Choose an aquarium: The veterinarian recommends 5 gallons or larger rather than a bowl.
  • Keep water warm and monitor it: Maintain 76°F to 81°F and use a thermometer. Most homes are cooler than this range, so an in-tank heater may be needed.
  • Provide gentle filtration: Use a low-flow filter.
  • Treat tap water: Use a dechlorinating product and test for heavy metals when using tap water. Avoid distilled water; it lacks minerals important to fish health.
  • Add safe furnishings: Plants and refuges give a betta places to hide and explore. Avoid sharp decorations that can tear fins. Plants are not food; bettas are carnivores and need suitable pelleted or flaked food.

Can a betta live with another kind of fish?

The University of Illinois source says some other species may be possible, but tank size and filtration must increase to support them. That is a conditional option, not a requirement for a betta’s well-being. Compatibility is not guaranteed by adding a tank mate; consider whether the aquarium can support the additional animal and whether the species are suitable together. Keeping one betta alone is a straightforward choice that avoids introducing a companion-related risk.
