If your cat is struggling to breathe, breathing with its mouth open, short of breath, or has blue or gray gums, go to an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Do not wait to see whether a hairball comes up.
Can cats choke on hairballs?
Cats swallow loose fur while grooming. Some of it passes through the digestive tract; sometimes it is vomited up as a hairball. A hairball can become lodged in the digestive tract and cause an obstruction. That is different from an airway emergency, and the two should not be confused.

Coughing, gagging, and retching can look similar. A cat that crouches, stretches its neck, and makes a dry or harsh sound may be coughing rather than trying to vomit. A cough can end in retching without producing a hairball. A brief description or video alone cannot reliably establish what is happening.

How to tell what you may be seeing
| What you see | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A hairball comes up, and the cat promptly returns to normal | An occasional hairball may follow normal grooming-related hair ingestion. | Monitor your cat. Ask a veterinarian about episodes that become frequent. |
| Crouching, neck extended, dry or harsh cough, or gagging without producing a hairball | Coughing can be mistaken for hairball retching. Respiratory conditions such as asthma or bronchitis are among possible causes. | Contact a veterinarian if the cough is persistent, severe, recurrent, or occurs with other signs of illness or weight loss. |
| Open-mouth or labored breathing, shortness of breath, or blue or gray gums | Respiratory distress, which may involve an asthma attack or an obstruction. | Seek emergency veterinary care immediately. |
| Repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, no bowel movements, or inability to keep food or water down | A possible digestive obstruction, including one caused by a hairball. | Arrange prompt veterinary care. |
What to do if your cat is gagging or may be choking
- Check breathing first. If your cat is struggling to breathe, breathing with its mouth open, short of breath, collapsing, or has blue or gray gums, call an emergency veterinary hospital and leave for care immediately.
- Keep your cat calm and handle it carefully. A frightened cat may bite. Avoid pushing anything farther into the throat.
- Do not put food, water, oil, or oral remedies into a cat having trouble breathing. Do not delay emergency care to try a hairball remedy.
- If an object is clearly visible and easily reachable, use caution. Do not perform blind finger sweeps. If breathing distress is present, professional care is the priority.
- Call a veterinarian even if the apparent obstruction clears. There is no reliable home check here that rules out a problem after a choking-like episode.
For respiratory distress, emergency veterinary guidance takes precedence over home treatment attempts. The veterinary first-aid guidance also cautions against careless attempts to clear an obstruction; it does not establish a single safe maneuver for owners to use in every suspected choking episode.

When a hairball needs veterinary attention
Repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, lack of bowel movements, or inability to keep food or water down can indicate a digestive obstruction and warrant prompt veterinary evaluation. Contact a veterinarian as well if your cat’s coughing or gagging is persistent, severe, or repeatedly returns, particularly if breathing is affected or your cat seems unwell.
VCA’s general vomiting guidance recommends contacting a veterinarian when hairballs occur more than about once a month. That is guidance from VCA, not a universal diagnostic cutoff; your cat’s health, symptoms, and pattern matter.

How to reduce recurring hairballs
Brush regularly
Regular brushing removes loose or dead fur before your cat can swallow it during grooming. Choose a grooming routine suited to your cat’s coat and tolerance.

If hairballs recur, discuss the pattern with your veterinarian. Excessive grooming may be related to itchy skin, allergies, stress, pain, or gastrointestinal disease. Addressing an underlying cause may be more useful than treating each hairball in isolation.
