Yes. Solar hot-water systems can become very hot and may discharge hot water, so households should know where their system’s outlet is and have a licensed plumber assess whether it is safely routed. A Perth family’s account of their dog Ollie’s death shows why that outlet matters—but it does not establish a fault common to all solar systems.
What happened to Ollie?
PerthNow/7NEWS reported on 17 February 2024 that Ollie, a 13-year-old poodle, was in the backyard eating when a solar hot-water system released a stream of scalding water. The report says he suffered third-degree burns to 80 percent of his body and could not be saved after his family took him to a veterinarian. That burn figure is part of the family’s account reported by the outlet, not an independently published medical finding.

Christa Hauck, the owner’s daughter, said her mother had rescued Ollie two years earlier and that he was “her everything.” The family shared the warning because they feared what might have happened if a toddler or child had been near the outlet. Read the PerthNow/7NEWS report.
Can a solar hot-water system release scalding water outdoors?
It can. The Australian Government’s YourHome guide explains that solar collectors heat water that flows to an insulated storage tank. In summer, water in a system may approach boiling; overheating can increase pressure and lead the system to discharge hot water.

This explains a possible hazard, not the specific cause of Ollie’s death. The news report does not establish which component failed, or include a technical investigation’s conclusion. It also does not show that all solar hot-water systems share the same defect.
Why the discharge outlet deserves attention
Hot water can burn quickly
YourHome states that water at 60°C can burn skin within five seconds. A discharge outlet can therefore pose a serious risk to pets and people who might be nearby, particularly children who may not recognise the danger.

A tap-mixing valve is not an outlet safeguard
Tempering and thermostatic mixing valves limit the temperature of water delivered at household taps. That does not, by itself, show that an outdoor relief or discharge outlet is safe. The outlet and its pipework need to be considered as part of the actual system installation.

Discharge is not necessarily a sign of the same fault in every system
The plumber quoted by PerthNow/7NEWS, Ben Van Der Kooy of Beautiful Plumbing, said hot water may be dumped on very hot days when little hot water is being used, to prevent pressure from building. He also advised households to find the pipe and protect pets and children from it. These are comments attributed to the plumber in that report—not a diagnosis of Ollie’s system or a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions and an on-site assessment.

What households with solar hot water can do
- Locate the discharge outlet. Find where the system’s discharge pipe terminates outside, and consider whether pets or children can reach the area. Do not assume that a pipe is harmless because it is usually dry.
- Arrange a site-specific inspection. Ask a licensed plumber to check the system’s safety valves, discharge pipe routing and installation against the system manufacturer’s requirements and rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
- Follow maintenance guidance. YourHome recommends professional installation, correctly installed safety valves and discharge pipes, and maintenance in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Have the plumber explain what applies to your system.
- Do not improvise a fix. The report quotes advice to put something in front of the pipe, but a pot plant or other improvised barrier is not a verified engineering solution. Do not block, cap, redirect or enclose a discharge pipe yourself; ask a plumber how to protect people and animals without compromising safe operation.
