Yes. Barking close to your dog to provoke a reaction can startle or confuse them, and a dramatic response in a video does not mean they are enjoying it. The safer choice is to skip the challenge and make pet content around activities your dog freely chooses.
What is the bark-at-your-dog TikTok trend?
In the trend described by Daily Paws on December 7, 2021, people sat close to their dogs, barked at them or played barking audio, and filmed the response. That article reported more than 300 million views for the videos over the preceding month; this is a historical figure from 2021, not a current view count.

Can barking at your dog scare or confuse them?
It can. A sudden bark at close range may be startling, while leaning over or staring at a dog as you bark can add pressure. Dogs react differently: one might appear playful or unbothered, while another may feel uncomfortable or frightened. A viral clip cannot reliably tell you which is happening.

How can you tell if your dog is uncomfortable?
Look at the whole body and what the dog is doing—not one isolated expression. Possible signs of stress or discomfort include:
- Backing away, trying to escape, or otherwise creating distance
- Flattened or pinned ears, wide eyes or “whale eye,” and a stiff body
- Lip licking or growling
- Baring teeth
These cues are not a diagnosis on their own. If your dog moves away or shows signs that concern you, stop, give them space, and let them choose whether to re-engage. The American Kennel Club cautions that a frightened dog may lunge, snap, or bite even if they are not usually aggressive. There is no established bite probability for this trend, but deliberately startling or crowding a dog is an avoidable risk.

What to do instead of the challenge
Choose interaction that is low-pressure and voluntary. Daily Paws suggests ordinary activities such as fetch or belly rubs; follow your dog’s cues rather than assuming every dog enjoys the same kind of contact. For a video, Humane World for Animals recommends capturing an activity the pet chooses and appears to enjoy, or adding a viral audio track to footage of the pet naturally going about their day.
