Yes—but only in a limited, evidence-based sense. Controlled experiments found that drinking beer increased mosquito activation, attraction, or landing in particular tests. That does not mean every mosquito is attracted to every beer drinker, and it does not mean mosquitoes simply follow beer odor. Hygiene is similarly nuanced: mosquitoes respond to a mixture of breath, heat, humidity, sweat-related chemistry, skin microbes, and individual body odor—not a binary measure of whether someone is clean.
Controlled studies found that drinking beer can make a person more attractive to some mosquitoes, but the effect is not universal—and it is not the same as mosquitoes being drawn to spilled beer or to “dirty” people. The best evidence concerns specific mosquito species tested under controlled conditions. In everyday outdoor settings, beer is only one possible influence among carbon dioxide, body heat, humidity, clothing, weather, location, mosquito abundance, and a person’s individual skin chemistry.

Hygiene matters in a more complicated way than the common claim that mosquitoes prefer unwashed people. Mosquitoes follow a changing combination of breath, heat, moisture, visual cues, sweat-related chemicals, and skin odors shaped partly by resident microbes. Showering may temporarily remove sweat and residues, but it has not been established as a dependable way to prevent bites.
What the beer studies actually found
The most frequently cited evidence comes from a 2010 PLOS ONE study conducted in Burkina Faso. Researchers tested 25 volunteers after they drank beer and compared them with 18 volunteers who drank water. The volunteers’ odors were presented to Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes in a Y-tube olfactometer, a device that allows mosquitoes to choose between odor streams. Thousands of mosquitoes were tested.

Water did not change how attractive the volunteers were. After beer consumption, however, the mosquitoes showed greater activation and orientation toward the volunteers’ odors. The researchers reported that the result was not explained by changes in exhaled carbon dioxide or body temperature, although the experiment did not identify one definitive chemical cause.
An earlier, smaller experiment reached a similar conclusion. After 13 volunteers drank 350 milliliters of 5.5% beer, researchers recorded a significant increase in mosquito landings. The study also examined ethanol in sweat, sweat production, and skin temperature, and concluded that alcohol ingestion increased mosquito attraction.
These studies support careful wording: beer consumption has been shown in controlled experiments to increase attraction or landing by some mosquitoes. They do not show that every mosquito species responds in the same way, that beer breath alone attracts mosquitoes, or that the effect has a predictable size during an ordinary evening outdoors.
Why beer might change mosquito attraction
Female mosquitoes seeking a blood meal do not rely on a single signal. At longer distances, carbon dioxide from breathing can help mosquitoes locate a potential host. As they approach, they can integrate odor, heat, humidity, and visual information.
Drinking beer may alter several host cues at once. It can affect metabolism, sweating, skin temperature, breath, and the chemical profile of odors released from the skin. The controlled studies did not prove that one particular compound—or simply the smell of beer—was responsible.
This distinction matters. A mosquito is not necessarily responding to a glass of beer in the same way it responds to a person who has consumed beer. The experiments primarily examined changes in human host cues after ingestion, rather than proving that beer spilled on a table is a universal mosquito lure.

Do mosquitoes prefer people who are unwashed?
Not in the simple, moralized sense implied by “dirty people attract mosquitoes.” Mosquito attraction is better understood as a response to biology and chemistry than as a judgment about cleanliness.
Sweat and skin secretions contain compounds that skin-resident microbes can transform into volatile odors. Compounds such as lactic acid, ammonia, and various carboxylic acids may contribute to attraction, often in combination rather than independently. The amount and mixture of these chemicals vary among people and across body sites.
One study of malaria-mosquito attraction found that highly attractive people had greater overall bacterial abundance but lower bacterial diversity on sampled skin than less attractive people. That is an association—not proof that inadequate washing causes more bites. Bacterial abundance and diversity are not visible measures of personal hygiene, and the study does not support a consumer rule such as “wash more often to stop mosquitoes.”
Why some people seem to be mosquito magnets
Some people consistently attract more mosquitoes than others. Research on Aedes aegypti found that exceptionally attractive individuals produced higher levels of skin-derived carboxylic acids. The pattern remained relatively stable over several years, suggesting that individual body chemistry can be an important, persistent factor.
That does not mean a person has one permanent “mosquito smell.” Attraction can still change with temperature, sweat, clothing, activity, skin products, the mosquito species present, and the surrounding environment. It means that two people sitting next to each other can receive different numbers of landings even when they drank the same beverage and appear equally clean.

Will showering prevent mosquito bites?
A shower may temporarily reduce sweat, residue, and some odor compounds, but there is not good evidence that ordinary bathing reliably prevents mosquito bites. Its effect will depend on how soon the person begins sweating again, the products used, the mosquito species, and the environmental conditions.
Showering is reasonable for comfort and may reduce some immediate odors, but it should not replace a tested repellent, protective clothing, or screens and other measures that reduce mosquito exposure.
What about deodorant, soap, and perfume?
Grooming products change the odor environment around the skin. Some ingredients may mask or modify human odors; others may have little effect or may alter mosquito responses in ways that are not obvious to a person using the product.

However, the effects need more testing in living people under ordinary outdoor conditions. It is therefore not reliable to say that a particular soap, deodorant, or perfume repels mosquitoes—or that one makes a person more attractive in every situation.
Do not treat fragrance as protection. “Natural” does not automatically mean mosquito-repellent, and a pleasant-smelling product has not necessarily been tested for bite prevention.
What actually helps prevent bites after drinking beer?
If you are having a beer outdoors, use the same evidence-based precautions you would use at any other time. They help address exposure rather than trying to manipulate body odor.

- Outdoor mosquito spray is formulated with a botanically inspired active ingredient and contains no added dyes, making it ideal for camping, hiking, running and your favorite outdoor activities
- OFF! bug spray offers effective protection from mosquitoes
- OFF! mosquito repellent comes in a convenient bottle with a spray pump for easy application before enjoying the outdoors
- Convenient bottle is perfect to pack in a backpack for bug repellent on the go
- Use an EPA-registered repellent. CDC-recommended active-ingredient categories include DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD, and 2-undecanone. Follow the product label for where and how much to apply, reapplication, age restrictions, and any warnings. A picaridin mosquito repellent is one practical option for exposed skin; choose a product whose EPA registration and directions are clear.
- Cover exposed skin. Wear loose-fitting long sleeves, long pants, socks, and closed footwear when mosquitoes are active. Loose clothing is preferable to tight clothing because mosquitoes may bite through thin, close-fitting fabric.
- Consider treated clothing or gear. For camping, hiking, or extended backyard exposure, permethrin-treated clothing or clothing treated according to the product label can add a layer of protection. Permethrin products intended for clothing are not the same as topical products for skin.
- Reduce mosquitoes around the home. Empty or cover containers that hold standing water, maintain screens, and use environmental-control products only according to their labels. An outdoor mosquito trap or patio mosquito-control device may be relevant in some settings, but performance depends on the technology, placement, maintenance, mosquito species, and coverage area. No device should be treated as a guaranteed solution.
- Use protection appropriate to the setting. A mosquito net is useful for sleeping or stationary situations, especially during travel or camping, but it is not a substitute for repellent when walking around a patio or yard.
Product note: If you buy a picaridin or DEET product, compare the active ingredient concentration, application instructions, duration claims, and label restrictions rather than choosing based only on the product’s scent or marketing language. These products are for mosquito-bite prevention; they are not proven to cancel out any beer-related change in attraction.

Permethrin-treated clothing and gear should be used only as directed. Do not apply a clothing-treatment product directly to skin, and keep treated items away from pets unless the product label specifically addresses their safe use. Dogs and cats can be especially vulnerable to inappropriate insecticide exposure, so follow the label and ask a veterinarian when unsure.
For patio devices and traps, check the label’s intended area, setup requirements, maintenance schedule, and limitations. A device that captures adult mosquitoes may not eliminate breeding sites or protect every person in a large or windy outdoor area.
For sleeping protection, select a net that fully encloses the sleeping area and has no gaps. Follow any instructions about hanging, tucking, washing, and insecticide treatment.

The studies show increased attraction or landing under particular experimental conditions. They do not establish that drinking beer increases the risk of mosquito-borne disease in every population, country, or outdoor situation.
That risk depends on whether disease-carrying mosquitoes are present, which species are involved, local transmission, the duration and timing of exposure, and whether the mosquito successfully bites. The practical response is still straightforward: reduce bites with repellent, clothing, screens, nets, and control of breeding areas.

The bottom line on beer, hygiene, and mosquitoes
Beer consumption has increased mosquito attraction or landing in controlled studies involving particular mosquitoes and doses. The finding is biologically plausible, but it is not a universal rule and does not mean mosquitoes are attracted to beer odor alone.
Mosquitoes also respond to carbon dioxide, heat, humidity, vision, sweat-related compounds, skin microbes, and persistent differences in individual skin chemistry. Being freshly showered does not make someone mosquito-proof, and no particular soap, deodorant, perfume, or essential oil should be treated as dependable protection.
For people—and for households with pets—the safest practical strategy is to prevent exposure with an appropriately labeled repellent, covering clothing, treated gear when useful, screens or nets, and sensible control of standing water. Never use a human mosquito repellent on an animal unless its label specifically permits that use or a veterinarian recommends it.

Are mosquitoes really attracted to people who drink beer?
Controlled studies involving particular mosquitoes found increased attraction or landing after volunteers consumed beer. The result does not prove that all mosquito species respond the same way or that spilled beer attracts mosquitoes universally.
Does taking a shower stop mosquito bites?
A shower can temporarily remove sweat, residues, and some odor compounds, but ordinary bathing has not been established as reliable mosquito protection. Use repellent and protective clothing instead.
Do mosquitoes prefer people who are unwashed?
No. Skin microbes help produce odor compounds from sweat and skin secretions, but mosquito attraction reflects multiple cues and individual biology. Calling someone “dirty” oversimplifies the evidence.
Can deodorant or perfume keep mosquitoes away?
No grooming product should be assumed to repel mosquitoes. Soaps, deodorants, and perfumes can alter skin odors, but their real-world effects vary and are incompletely studied.

What is the best way to prevent bites after drinking outdoors?
Use an EPA-registered repellent such as one containing picaridin or DEET, follow the label, cover exposed skin, and use screens, nets, treated clothing, or environmental controls as appropriate. Do not apply human products to pets unless the label or a veterinarian specifically permits it.
The Bottom Line
Beer may increase attraction to some mosquitoes, but hygiene is not a simple cleanliness test. Showering and scented products are unreliable protection. Use an EPA-registered repellent, cover exposed skin, consider permethrin-treated clothing for extended outdoor activity, and keep mosquito-control products away from pets unless their labels specifically allow animal use.
