The crows were not proven to attack MAGA supporters. Viral videos linked to Threads user @biz_dave show crows removing a red hat from a stationary outdoor setup to reach food. The creator says the behavior took roughly seven months to develop, but the footage does not establish that the birds recognize the MAGA logo, distinguish political hats from other red hats, or target people.
No confirmed evidence shows that crows were trained to attack people wearing MAGA hats. The viral videos associated with Threads user @biz_dave show crows removing a red, hat-like object from a stationary outdoor setup to reach food underneath. According to the creator’s account, the birds were conditioned over roughly seven months—but the footage does not show them recognizing the MAGA logo, targeting a person, or expressing a political opinion.

What the viral crow videos actually show
In the circulated clips, a crow approaches a red cap placed on a fixed surface such as a fence or platform. The bird manipulates or removes the cap and gains access to food. The visual joke depends on the cap’s association with the “Make America Great Again” movement, but the demonstrated behavior is narrower: a crow has learned that moving a particular object can lead to a food reward.
That distinction matters. The available reporting does not establish that the birds can:

No confirmed real-world hat snatching from a Trump supporter was found in the reviewed coverage. “Trained crows to remove a red hat in a staged feeding setup” is therefore more accurate than “trained crows to attack MAGA supporters.”
How @biz_dave says the training progressed
The creator reportedly described the project as taking about seven months. The first four months were spent getting neighborhood crows to visit the same feeding location consistently. Foods mentioned in coverage included peanuts, chicken scraps, mealworms, and dog kibble.
The later conditioning reportedly progressed through increasingly difficult object-manipulation tasks:

- The container was replaced with an opaque red cup.
- The crows were encouraged to strike, move, or flip objects to reach the reward.
- A red object roughly comparable in size and weight to a cap was introduced.
- Key rings were attached to a red cap to make lifting easier, then removed as the birds became more capable.
- In the staged setup, the creator said the crows eventually removed the hat in roughly two minutes.
This sounds like incremental conditioning: make the desired action possible, reward it, and gradually remove assistance. It is also an account supplied by the creator, not an independently controlled scientific experiment. The videos do not tell viewers how consistently the behavior worked, how many crows participated, or whether it transferred to unfamiliar locations and people.

Why the behavior is plausible without being political
American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) are intelligent, adaptable, omnivorous birds that commonly forage on the ground. Cornell Lab of Ornithology lists foods ranging from insects, earthworms, seeds, and fruit to pet food, garbage, and carrion. Outdoor food sources can attract them, which helps explain why a consistent feeding location may have brought the birds back.
Crows are also family-oriented and capable of social learning. Young birds can remain with family groups for an extended period, and crows may learn by observing one another. Those traits make gradual food-based object training plausible. They do not, however, validate every detail of this particular story or indicate that a crow understands a human political symbol.
The most reasonable interpretation is an editorial inference from the reported sequence: the birds appear to have learned an association involving a food reward, a red object, its position, and the action needed to move it. They were not shown “hating Trump,” identifying an ideology, or choosing a political target.
Why the stunt went viral
The story combines several elements that work especially well in short-form social media: a recognizable political symbol, an unusual animal, a simple visual objective, and a progression viewers can understand immediately. A crow lifting a hat to reveal food is funny and surprising even without the political framing.

Coverage described the creator as interested in animal behavior and training psychology, as well as in creating an absurd form of political resistance. The account’s own explanation reportedly characterized him as a “big nerd” and a “very part-time artist.” Those motivations help explain the stunt, but they do not turn the videos into evidence of a repeatable wildlife experiment.
Do crows really collect shiny objects?
Another popular crow belief is that the birds routinely collect shiny objects and bring gifts to people. Cornell’s crow guidance cautions that this is largely folklore associated with captive or hand-raised birds, rather than a general fact about wild crows.
Wild crows are certainly curious and capable of manipulating objects, but curiosity should not be confused with a dependable desire to collect human possessions. The hat videos likewise show a specific learned behavior in a specific setup—not proof of a broad, symbolic attraction to hats or political merchandise.

Should you try to train neighborhood crows?
It is best not to copy the stunt or attempt to condition free-ranging birds to pull objects from people. A bird trained to interfere with strangers could create unintended encounters involving ordinary red hats, children, pets, or startled pedestrians. No such incident was documented in the reviewed reporting, so this is a foreseeable safety concern—not a claim that one occurred.

Wildlife agencies also warn that feeding wild animals can teach them to associate people with food, alter normal behavior, increase disease transmission, and concentrate animals in ways that raise predator or collision risks. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service distinguishes ordinary backyard bird feeding from intentionally hand-feeding wildlife, but still emphasizes sanitation and risk reduction.
If your goal is simply to observe local birds, a ground or platform bird feeder can provide a more appropriate observation point than a training setup. Keep the area clean, remove moldy or discarded food, and avoid creating a place where birds must cross dangerous traffic or crowded human areas.
Mealworms were among the foods reportedly used in this story. Readers interested in ordinary backyard bird feeding may encounter dried mealworms for wild birds, but that product reference should not be taken as an endorsement of training wild birds or teaching them to interfere with people.

The takeaway: clever conditioning, not a crow political movement
The viral claim contains a real piece of animal behavior, but the headline overstates what has been shown. According to @biz_dave, neighborhood crows were gradually conditioned to move a red hat-like object from a stationary feeding setup. The public videos demonstrate object manipulation for food. They do not demonstrate political recognition, a reliable attack on MAGA wearers, or a general method that other people can safely reproduce.

The entertaining part is the mismatch between human symbolism and animal learning. To viewers, the red hat carries a political message. To the crows, the available evidence points to a much simpler lesson: moving this object can expose something worth eating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the crows actually attack someone wearing a MAGA hat?
No. The reviewed footage shows crows removing a red hat-like object from a stationary surface to reach food. It does not show a crow attacking or removing a hat from a person.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo the crows know what MAGA means?
There is no evidence in the reviewed coverage that the birds understood the MAGA logo or its political meaning. The behavior is more consistently explained as a learned association between a red object, its position, and a food reward.
What food was used to train the crows?
The creator reportedly used several foods, including peanuts, chicken scraps, mealworms, and dog kibble. The birds were reportedly trained through gradually more difficult object-manipulation tasks.
Should people try to reproduce the crow-training stunt?
It is not advisable. Training free-ranging birds to pull objects from people could cause unsafe encounters, and wildlife agencies warn that feeding can alter animal behavior and increase disease or collision risks.
The Bottom Line
The videos show crows removing a red hat from a stationary, food-based setup—not attacking people or recognizing what MAGA means. Treat the political framing as the joke and the crow behavior as learned conditioning, and do not train wild birds to approach or interfere with strangers.
