Several veterinary diets sold in Canada are formulated for cats with diabetes, but no single food is best for every cat. The right choice depends on your cat’s food preferences, body condition, other health needs, and the feeding and monitoring plan set by your veterinarian. The available product information supports a practical shortlist of five wet and dry options—not ten independently tested or ranked picks.

How the published calorie profiles compare
The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association-hosted comparison below reports calories from protein, fat, and carbohydrate, plus fibre per 1,000 kcal. Its figures come from manufacturer product guides in a 2025 resource; they are not results from a head-to-head clinical feeding trial. Check current Canadian packaging and manufacturer data with your veterinarian before using them to choose a diet.

What to weigh when choosing a formula
Whether your cat reliably eats it
A nutritionally suitable food only helps if your cat will eat a predictable amount of it. A veterinary nutritionist advises considering the cat’s preferences and habits; consistent intake matters more than applying a universal wet-versus-dry rule. Wet food may support satiety in general, while dry food may be more practical for some cats. Read Royal Canin Academy’s discussion of nutrition for diabetic cats.
Calorie distribution and body condition
The published profiles show that nutrient distribution differs between products and even between formats from the same product line. Your veterinarian can interpret those figures alongside your cat’s weight, body condition, muscle condition, and any weight-management goal. Do not treat a manufacturer feeding table as a personalized portion prescription.

Other health needs and practical feeding
Concurrent urinary or other conditions can affect the choice. Tell the veterinarian what your cat currently eats, including treats and supplements, and consider whether you can obtain the selected formula consistently. The 2026 American Animal Hospital Association guideline calls for a complete diet and medication history, physical examination, body and muscle condition assessment, and appropriate diagnostic evaluation when assessing feline diabetes. Read the 2026 AAHA guidance on recognizing diabetes in cats.
Plan food changes and monitoring with the veterinarian
A food change can affect diabetes management, so do not change your cat’s diet or insulin on your own. Ask the treating veterinarian how to transition foods, what intake to record, and when glucose or other follow-up checks are needed. Manufacturer guidance for these veterinary diets also calls for veterinary involvement or monitoring.
Rank #3
- Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food is specially formulated by Hill’s nutritionists and veterinarians to support your cat’s glucose and weight management
- Clinical nutrition optimized to help cats lose weight and manage blood sugar
- Supports the unique nutritional needs of diabetic cats through high protein and optimal carbohydrates help manage blood sugar
- Enriched with arginine, an essential amino acid
- Clinically proven antioxidants support a healthy immune system
If diabetes has not been confirmed, food selection is not a diagnostic substitute. The AAHA guideline notes that elevated blood glucose without clinical signs can reflect stress hyperglycemia, which is one reason assessment requires clinical context rather than a food choice alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is a shortlist, not a ten-food ranking
Canadian manufacturer pages and professional nutrition resources establish five relevant product-and-format options across three veterinary diet lines. They do not establish ten independently evaluated winners, comparative palatability, retailer stock, or clinical superiority among these foods. Use the options and nutrition information as a starting point for a veterinarian-guided decision, not as a universal ranking.
