Stocking Your Pond With Fish: Species, Numbers, and Timing

Pond stocking depends on location, size, existing fish, water quality, and goals. Compare regional recommendations and learn when to seek local advice.

The right pond fish and stocking rate depend on where you live, pond size, existing fish, water quality, and whether you want sport fishing or a simpler fishery. For many warmwater ponds, bass paired with bluegill or other suitable sunfish is a common sport-fishing plan—but regional extension recommendations differ, and their per-acre figures are not universal. Check local guidance before stocking, especially if the pond already contains fish or connects to public waters.

Choose fish to match your pond and goal

Before choosing species or counting fish, establish the pond’s surface area, location, current fish population, water quality, and intended use. Also consider whether you will fertilize the pond or provide supplemental feed. These conditions affect which species and stocking rates are appropriate.

  • For a managed warmwater sport fishery: Largemouth bass with bluegill, sometimes alongside redear sunfish, is a common combination in several southern extension guides. Sunfish provide prey for bass, so maintaining the predator-prey balance is part of the plan.
  • For a small pond: A bass-sunfish fishery can be difficult to manage in a very small area. Alabama Cooperative Extension says catfish may be a better choice below half an acre; suitability still depends on local conditions and goals.
  • For an established or recently affected pond: Do not apply a new-pond stocking table automatically. Existing fish numbers, species, and the cause of any fish kill can change what is appropriate.

Alabama Cooperative Extension cautions against common carp, bullheads, and flathead catfish in farm ponds: they can compete with desired fish, muddy water, or prey on other fish. Its guidance describes bass-bluegill or bass-bluegill-redear combinations as common in the Southeast and generally suitable for ponds larger than half an acre. Alabama Cooperative Extension: Management of Recreational Fish Ponds.

Stocking rates differ by region and pond conditions

The figures below are examples from state extension recommendations, not a nationwide formula. They refer to different regional settings and pond conditions. Fertility, feeding, pond size, and management goals can change the rate; follow the guidance for your location rather than combining numbers from different states.

Source and situation Example stocking recommendation Timing or qualification
Mississippi State Extension; unfertilized ponds at least 1 acre 50 largemouth bass and 500 bream per acre for a bass-bluegill option Stock bream, catfish, triploid grass carp, and optional fathead minnows in fall or winter; add bass in spring. These are Mississippi recommendations. Mississippi State Extension.
NC State Extension; example for ponds up to 10 acres, unfertilized 350 bluegill, 150 redear sunfish, 50 largemouth bass, and 50 channel catfish per acre Example timing is sunfish and catfish in October–November, then bass the following June. Rates are general and may need adjustment for management, fishing, water quality, and other uses. NC State Extension Pond Management Guide.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension; new or renovated, unfertilized ponds 500 bluegill and 50 largemouth bass per acre Fertilization or supplemental feeding changes the suggested rate. Bluegill can overpopulate and become stunted, especially in ponds under 1 acre. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

These examples illustrate why “fish per acre” is not enough to determine a plan. A rate intended for an unfertilized new pond may not fit a fertilized pond, a pond where feed is supplied, or an established fishery. NC State Extension notes that management, fishing, water quality, and other uses can call for adjustments.

When to add fish

In the Mississippi and North Carolina examples, prey fish are stocked before bass. Mississippi State Extension advises stocking bream, catfish, triploid grass carp, and optional fathead minnows in fall or winter, with bass following in spring. NC State Extension’s example stocks sunfish and catfish in October–November and bass the following June. Treat these as regional schedules, not fixed dates for every climate or pond; ask a local fisheries specialist when to stock in your area.

What to do before stocking an existing pond

A pond with an existing population needs a different assessment from a new or renovated pond. Before adding fish—or restocking after a fish kill—consult local fisheries personnel. They can help determine what fish remain, whether the pond is suitable for the intended species, and whether a new stocking rate makes sense. Adding fish without that information risks overstocking or worsening an imbalance.

Check regulations before ordering or releasing fish. North Carolina requires a state fish-stocking permit for a pond that is not self-contained and has a direct connection to a stream or other public water body. Rules elsewhere may differ, so check with the relevant local or state agency.
