Yes—cats can have a small amount of plain, cat-appropriate bone broth as a meal topper. It is optional, not a complete food or a treatment. Check the full ingredient list for onion, garlic, chives, or leeks, and count the broth’s calories along with all other treats and toppers.
What bone broth can—and cannot—do for a cat
Veterinary guidance lists bone broth as one possible topper for adding moisture or variety to a meal. That does not establish a specific health benefit, make broth necessary, or show that it treats dehydration or illness. No broth-specific clinical outcome or universally safe serving amount is established in the cited guidance.

Broth is not nutritionally complete cat food. Cats have specific nutrient requirements, so it should not replace a complete and balanced diet. For a moisture-rich food option, Cornell notes that canned cat food has at least 75% moisture; check the product’s nutritional adequacy statement when choosing food.

- Read the current full label. Do not assume a broth is suitable because it is made from meat or bones. Ingredients and formulations vary, so assess the specific product.
- Reject alliums in any form. Do not serve broth containing onion, garlic, chives, or leeks—including cooked, dried, powdered, or liquid forms. Garlic is described as the most toxic of these ingredients. Veterinary toxicologist Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, writes for Pet Poison Helpline: “Never give food seasoned with onions or garlic to your cat.”
- Check calories per serving or volume. Include broth in the total calories from treats and toppers rather than treating it as calorie-free.
- Prefer a plain product intended for cats when possible. A category label alone does not certify a product’s safety; the ingredient list still matters.
How much bone broth is appropriate?
VCA Animal Hospitals advises that all toppers and treats together should not provide more than 10% of a dog’s or cat’s daily calories. This is general guidance, not a personalized allowance for broth. VCA also gives ¼ cup of bone broth at each meal as an example maximum, but that example is not a universal feline prescription or a cat-specific dose. Individual needs vary, so use the calorie guidance and ask your veterinarian if you need an amount for your cat.

If your cat has a prescribed diet, an ongoing illness, or a veterinarian-directed feeding plan, ask the veterinarian before adding broth. Cornell advises against giving supplements without veterinary approval.
What if your cat drank seasoned broth?
If it contained onion, garlic, chives, or leeks, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly—even if your cat seems well. Do not wait for symptoms or try to judge safety from a guessed dose; the amount consumed and the cat’s condition matter.

Possible effects include mouth irritation, drooling, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, a rapid heart or breathing rate, panting, pale gums, and red-colored urine. Alliums can cause gastrointestinal upset and, after larger exposures, damage red blood cells. VCA recommends contacting a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline immediately after ingestion.
Why cooked bones should stay out of the bowl
Do not serve cooked bones or bone fragments. VCA warns that cooked bones can splinter and cause digestive obstruction or perforation. If making broth at home, strain it carefully and discard the bones safely.
