Hairless cats have little coat protection and are at increased risk of sunburn, but topical products can be groomed off or swallowed. Keep your cat out of strong direct sun, provide reliable shade, and ask your veterinarian whether a specific sunscreen and application plan are appropriate.
Does a Sphynx need sunscreen?
A Sphynx is more vulnerable to sunburn than a cat with a protective coat. That does not make sunscreen an automatic or sufficient solution: cats groom themselves, and a topical product may be licked off or ingested. Cats Protection says the effectiveness of sunscreen for cats is unknown because of grooming; this uncertainty supports prioritizing exposure control and veterinary guidance, not assuming every sunscreen is ineffective. Cats Protection’s guidance on keeping cats safe discusses the uncertainty.

Veterinary Partner warns that some sunscreen ingredients, including zinc, may be harmful if swallowed. Ask your veterinarian to review the exact product and explain where, how, and when to apply it. Do not assume a human sunscreen or a product labeled “pet-safe” is suitable for a cat that can lick it. Veterinary Partner’s sunscreen guidance covers ingestion concerns and veterinary consultation.

Eight summer safety tips for a Sphynx
1. Limit direct sun
Keep your cat indoors when the sun is strong, and supervise any outdoor time. Veterinary Partner’s first-aid guidance emphasizes prevention and keeping pets out of direct sunlight. Veterinary Partner’s sunburn first-aid page explains the prevention-first approach.
2. Provide dependable shade
If your cat goes outside, make sure there is a reliably shaded place to retreat to; bring the cat indoors if shade is not available. Cornell lists trees, umbrellas, sun sails, and indoor spaces as shade options. Cornell Feline Health Center’s heat-safety guidance covers shade and other summer precautions.

3. Ask your veterinarian about a specific sunscreen
For a Sphynx, ask your own veterinarian to review the exact product and recommend an application plan before using sunscreen. Cornell discusses pet-safe sunscreen for exposed areas on light-colored cats, while Veterinary Partner cautions that ingredients can be harmful if licked. Neither supports treating sunscreen as a substitute for reducing sun exposure.

How to recognize possible sunburn
Redness or hair loss can be signs of sunburn. Check the bridge of the nose, ear tips, skin around the lips, and other areas with little pigment. The American Animal Hospital Association also identifies ear flaps, the nose bridge, belly, groin, and shaved areas as places to watch. Seek veterinary advice for suspected burns, persistent redness, sores, or other skin changes. AAHA’s heat-safety guidance lists susceptible pets and areas to check; Veterinary Partner’s sunscreen page describes common burn sites.
Choosing between shade, clothing, sunscreen, and staying indoors
| Option | What it can do | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Limit outdoor time or stay indoors | Reduces direct sun exposure; indoor air conditioning also helps during extreme heat. | Requires keeping the cat inside or closely supervising outdoor access. |
| Shade | Provides a place out of direct sun; Cornell gives trees, umbrellas, and sun sails as examples. | Must be reliably available where the cat spends time outside. |
| Clothing | Can provide a physical barrier over covered skin. | Only useful if the cat tolerates it; remove it if the cat is distressed or overheated. No specific garment or UV rating is established here. |
| Sunscreen | May be considered for exposed areas after veterinary advice. | May be groomed off or swallowed; the exact product and application plan need veterinary review. |
The practical choice depends on how much direct exposure it prevents, whether your cat tolerates it, whether it can be groomed off or ingested, and how consistently you can use it. The cited veterinary guidance most directly supports limiting exposure and providing shade; topical products warrant individualized veterinary review.
What to do if your cat may have a sunburn
Contact a veterinarian for suspected burns, persistent redness, sores, or skin changes. Veterinary Partner advises seeking veterinary attention for a burn and not applying other medication without first discussing it with a veterinarian. Do not try a human sunscreen or an aloe preparation as routine treatment. Veterinary Partner’s sunburn first-aid guidance explains when to seek care and cautions against applying medication without veterinary advice.
