Most adult cats should not drink cow’s milk regularly. After kittens are weaned, many produce less lactase, the enzyme that digests lactose, milk’s natural sugar. Undigested lactose can cause diarrhea, vomiting, gas, bloating, or abdominal discomfort.
Milk is not poisonous to every cat, and some tolerate a small amount, but it is unnecessary for cats eating a complete diet. Fresh water is the better everyday drink.
Why kittens can drink milk but adult cats often cannot
Unweaned kittens are designed to digest their mother’s milk and produce more lactase while nursing. As they transition to solid food, lactase production commonly falls, making lactose harder to digest.
Cats may be attracted to milk’s taste and fat content, but enjoying it does not mean they can digest it well or need it. The familiar image of a cat drinking from a saucer does not make cow’s milk suitable for adult cats.

Not every cat reacts in the same way. Some tolerate a small quantity, while others develop symptoms after only a little. A cat appearing fine after a few licks does not mean milk is nutritious or suitable as a regular treat.
What happens when a cat drinks milk?
When lactose is not digested in the small intestine, it passes into the colon, where it can draw water into the intestinal tract and be fermented by gut bacteria. The result may be digestive upset, including:
- Loose stool or diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Gas or flatulence
- Bloating
- Abdominal discomfort
- Reduced appetite in some cats
Symptoms may appear within roughly 12 hours of drinking milk. Mild symptoms often settle within about a day after the milk is removed, but severe or prolonged vomiting or diarrhea can cause dehydration.
Milk also adds fat and calories without providing anything an adequately fed cat needs. Regular servings can contribute to weight gain, and replacing food or water with milk can interfere with a balanced diet.

A few accidental licks are unlikely to cause a serious problem in most healthy cats. Do not give a cat a bowl of milk to “test” its tolerance: the amount that triggers symptoms varies, and repeated exposure adds unnecessary calories.

If your cat has consumed a small amount:
- Remove the milk and do not offer more dairy.
- Make sure fresh water is available.
- Avoid giving other rich or fatty foods.
- Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, lethargy, or reduced appetite.
Do not assume every digestive episode after milk is lactose intolerance. Food allergies, other intolerances, parasites, infections, sudden diet changes, and unrelated illnesses can cause similar signs.
When should you call a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat:
- Cannot keep water down
- Has repeated vomiting or severe diarrhea
- Is markedly weak or lethargic
- Shows signs of dehydration
- Is very young, elderly, pregnant, or has an underlying illness
- Remains unwell for more than about 24 hours, or symptoms worsen
Do not give human anti-diarrhea or anti-nausea medicine unless your veterinarian specifically tells you to. Some human medications are unsafe for cats.
Can kittens have cow’s milk?
Unweaned kittens should receive their mother’s milk whenever possible—not ordinary cow’s milk. Cow’s milk does not provide the nutritional profile a growing kitten needs and can contribute to digestive problems.
If the mother is unavailable or cannot nurse, use a commercial kitten milk replacer formulated for growing kittens and prepare it according to the product label. Ask a veterinarian for feeding advice; do not use an improvised recipe.
Very young or weak kittens can aspirate liquid if fed too quickly or in the wrong position. VCA recommends feeding with the kitten horizontal and its head in a neutral position; follow veterinary guidance.

Is goat’s milk safer?
Goat’s milk is not a nutritionally reliable replacement for a mother cat’s milk or commercial kitten formula. It still contains lactose, so an adult cat may develop digestive upset after drinking it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVCA notes that pasteurized goat’s milk may be used only as an emergency measure for a kitten when formula is temporarily unavailable. Obtain a proper kitten milk replacer as soon as possible and ask a veterinarian for feeding advice.
What about lactose-free “cat milk”?
Milk products made specifically for cats may be easier for some cats to tolerate because they contain little or no lactose. They are still treats, not necessities, and do not replace fresh water or complete cat food.
Check the calorie content and follow veterinary advice for cats with obesity, diabetes, pancreatitis, kidney disease, or other medical conditions. Regular servings can contribute to weight gain.

Can cats drink almond, oat, soy, or coconut milk?
Plant-based drinks are not needed by cats and should not replace water or a complete, balanced diet. Formulations vary and may contain added sugar, salt, flavorings, oils, or other ingredients that can cause gastrointestinal upset. Check the ingredient list and ask a veterinarian if you are unsure.
Coconut products can cause stomach upset or loose stools because of their oils. If a cat accidentally drinks a small amount, check the ingredients and monitor it; contact a veterinarian if symptoms occur or the product contains a concerning ingredient.

Common milk myths
“All cats are lactose-intolerant.”
Not necessarily. Many cats lose substantial lactase activity after weaning, but individual tolerance varies. Even a cat that shows no immediate reaction does not need milk in its diet.
“Milk is poisonous to cats.”
Ordinary milk is not generally a universal poison. The usual concerns are lactose-related stomach upset, excess calories, and poor nutritional value for cats.
“Cats need milk for calcium.”
A cat eating an appropriate complete and balanced diet does not need milk as a calcium supplement. Milk is not a substitute for complete cat food.

“Cow’s milk is fine for orphaned kittens.”
It is not. Orphaned kittens need their mother’s milk or a properly formulated commercial kitten milk replacer. Cow’s milk does not provide the nutritional profile they require.
“Lactose-free milk is automatically healthy.”
Removing lactose may reduce one cause of digestive upset, but it does not make milk essential. It can still provide unnecessary calories and may not suit cats with certain health conditions.
FAQ
Can cats drink milk without getting sick?
Some cats tolerate a small amount, but tolerance varies and milk is not necessary. Regular cow’s milk can cause diarrhea, vomiting, gas, or bloating and may add excess calories.
What should I do if my cat drinks milk?
Remove the milk, provide fresh water, avoid other rich foods, and watch for digestive symptoms. Contact a veterinarian if symptoms are severe, persistent, or include repeated vomiting, weakness, or dehydration.
Recommended Free Tools
Can newborn kittens drink cow’s milk?
No. Unweaned kittens need their mother’s milk or a commercial kitten milk replacer. Cow’s milk does not provide the nutrients they need and can cause digestive problems.
Is lactose-free cat milk safe?
A cat-specific lactose-free product may be tolerated as an occasional treat, but it is not required and can still add calories. Check the label and ask a veterinarian first if your cat has a medical condition or weight problem.
The Bottom Line
Adult cats can sometimes tolerate a little milk, but they do not need it. Regular cow’s milk is a poor choice because many cats digest lactose poorly and the extra calories provide no essential benefit. Give your cat fresh water and a complete, balanced diet instead. For an unweaned kitten, use the mother’s milk or a properly formulated commercial kitten milk replacer—not cow’s milk.
