Guinea pigs can eat a small amount of ripe tomato fruit according to some guidance, but advice differs: VCA lists tomato among vitamin-C-rich vegetables, while Oxbow recommends avoiding it because its acidity may irritate the mouth or digestive system. The cautious choice is to skip tomato and offer another suitable vegetable. Never feed tomato leaves, stems, or unripe fruit.
Which parts of a tomato can guinea pigs eat?
| Tomato part | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Ripe tomato fruit | VCA lists tomato among vegetables high in vitamin C. Oxbow says small amounts of ripe fruit are not outright toxic, but advises avoiding tomato because acidity may cause mouth sores or digestive upset. There is no tomato-specific safe portion or frequency established in these sources. |
| Leaves and stems | Do not feed them. Oxbow warns that these parts contain tomatine and may be harmful. |
| Unripe tomato | Do not feed it. Oxbow warns that unripe tomatoes contain tomatine and may be harmful. |
The guidance about ripe fruit is not unanimous, and “not outright toxic” does not mean a food is recommended as a regular part of the diet.
Why do recommendations about ripe tomato differ?
VCA Animal Hospitals’ veterinary-authored feeding guide includes tomato in its list of vegetables high in vitamin C. Oxbow Animal Health’s foods to avoid guide takes a more cautious position: it recommends avoiding tomatoes because their acidity may lead to mouth sores or digestive upset, while distinguishing ripe fruit from potentially harmful leaves, stems, and unripe fruit.
Neither source establishes an exact tomato serving size or schedule. If you decide to offer ripe tomato despite Oxbow’s caution, keep the amount small rather than treating it as a routine food. You can avoid the disagreement altogether by choosing a different suitable vegetable.

What should a guinea pig’s regular diet include?
Tomato is not a substitute for the foods that form the foundation of a guinea pig’s diet. VCA recommends unlimited timothy or other low-calcium hay, a smaller amount of high-fiber guinea pig pellets, and a variety of fresh leafy greens and vegetables. The RSPCA likewise says good-quality hay should make up most of the diet and be available at all times.
- Hay: Keep good-quality grass hay available at all times.
- Pellets: Offer a smaller quantity of commercial, high-fiber guinea pig pellets, following appropriate feeding guidance.
- Fresh vegetables: Provide a varied selection, including suitable vitamin-C-rich choices.
VCA’s guide says guinea pigs need 10–50 mg of vitamin C per day, depending on factors such as age, health, stress, and pregnancy. That is general vitamin C guidance—not a tomato portion recommendation. A balanced diet should not rely on tomato to meet this need.

How should you introduce a new food?
Introduce diet changes gradually. VCA and the RSPCA caution that sudden changes can lead to problems, including food refusal. Do not make a new food a major part of the diet all at once.
VCA also warns that excess fruit can disturb intestinal bacteria and cause serious diarrhea. Its general advice for fruit is occasional, small servings; it does not define a safe serving of tomato specifically.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if your guinea pig’s eating, drinking, or toilet habits change. The RSPCA recommends seeking veterinary advice when these changes occur. Do not try to treat a possible reaction at home based on a general food guide.
