In the United States, dogs and cats are not known to become infected with hantavirus, so they are not known to pass it directly to people. The practical concern is indirect: a pet may bring an infected wild rodent into a home or into contact with someone. Avoid handling that rodent or its waste, and follow CDC guidance for safe cleanup.
Can pets carry hantavirus to people?
For ordinary household dogs and cats in the United States, the answer is no known direct transmission: the CDC says these pets are not known to become infected with hantavirus. It also warns that pets may bring infected rodents to people or into homes. That is an indirect route of concern, not evidence that a dog or cat becomes a carrier and infects a person. CDC clinician guidance

Hantaviruses are associated mainly with rodents and their urine, droppings, saliva, and nesting materials. A person can be exposed when contaminated material is disturbed and particles become airborne, by touching contaminated material and then the eyes, nose, or mouth, or when it contacts broken skin. Rodent bites or scratches are less common routes. CDC prevention guidance
So if a pet comes across a mouse or rat, the important question is not whether the pet passed hantavirus to you. It is whether an infected rodent or contaminated material has been brought into your surroundings, and whether anyone has had contact with it.

That distinction also helps put an encounter in perspective: a pet finding or carrying a rodent does not establish that the rodent was infected, and it does not establish that a person was exposed. The risk to consider is contact with the rodent or material it left behind—not simply being near a dog or cat. Hantaviruses can cause serious illness, so it is sensible to avoid potential rodent contamination even when infection has not been confirmed. CDC: Hantavirus Prevention
How the risk differs by pet and type of contact
| Situation | What CDC guidance establishes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Dog or cat in the United States | Not known to become infected with hantavirus; may bring infected rodents to people or into homes. CDC | Focus on the wild rodent and any contaminated waste or nesting material, rather than assuming the pet is infectious. |
| Wild mouse or rat brought indoors by a pet | Rodents and contaminated urine, droppings, saliva, and nests are the relevant exposure sources. CDC | Do not pick up the rodent or casually sweep or disturb its waste; use CDC safe-cleanup guidance. |
| Pet rat or another live pet rodent | Handlers may be exposed through bites or contact with saliva, urine, droppings, or contaminated bedding from infected rodents. CDC | Use different precautions from those for dogs and cats; ask a veterinarian about new pet rats and keep wild rats away from pet rats. |
This distinction matters because “pet” covers very different animals. The CDC statement about dogs and cats should not be applied to pet rodents or every animal species. Conversely, the advice about handling pet rodents does not mean that dogs and cats are known to transmit hantavirus.
It is also useful to separate direct and indirect exposure. Direct transmission would mean the dog or cat became infected and passed the virus to a person; CDC says these animals are not known to become infected in the United States. Indirect exposure means a pet brings a wild rodent or contaminated nesting material into a place where people may encounter it. The latter is the practical household concern described by CDC.

If your pet brings a wild rodent indoors
Do not handle the rodent, droppings, urine, saliva, or nesting material with bare hands or treat the area as an ordinary mess. Disturbing fresh rodent waste or a nest can put contaminated material into the air. The CDC advises avoiding contact with rodents and safely cleaning rodent waste; follow its current instructions for the specific cleanup situation rather than improvising a method. CDC: Hantavirus Prevention
- Keep people and pets away from the rodent and affected area. Avoid touching the animal or contaminated materials while deciding how to handle the situation.
- Use the CDC’s safe-cleanup guidance. Cleanup needs to account for the risks of disturbing urine, droppings, and nesting material. The CDC prevention page gives the relevant instructions; this article does not substitute a shorter procedure for them.
- Consider how the rodent got inside. Check for possible entry gaps and sources of accessible food or shelter, then address them to reduce future rodent contact.
- Contact a health professional if someone becomes ill after possible rodent exposure. Mention the rodent and any contact with its waste or nest, even if the illness initially seems like a common flu-like illness.
Finding a rodent does not establish that it carried hantavirus, and a pet bringing one inside does not establish that anyone was exposed. The point of the precautions is to avoid contact with a possible source, not to diagnose the rodent or the household.

Exposure can happen in more than one way, which is why simply avoiding a bite is not enough. Breathing contaminated air after urine, droppings, or nesting material is disturbed is one recognized route. Touching contaminated material and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth can also expose someone, as can contact with broken skin. Bites and scratches are less common routes. These routes concern contaminated rodent material; they do not mean that routine contact with a household dog or cat is a recognized hantavirus route. CDC prevention guidance
How to reduce rodent access to pets and the home
Prevention centers on reducing contact with wild rodents and making food and shelter less accessible. The CDC recommends sealing entry gaps, controlling food access, and safely cleaning rodent waste. Store all food—including pet food—covered in rodent-proof containers. A suitable container is useful for that narrow purpose: limiting wild rodents’ access to pet food. It does not eliminate every possible exposure. CDC prevention guidance

- Look for and seal gaps rodents could use to enter the home.
- Reduce conditions that provide rodents with food or shelter around the home.
- If rodents have been present, follow CDC instructions for cleaning their waste rather than disturbing it casually.
These measures target the animal and materials associated with hantavirus exposure. They are relevant whether or not a pet has caught a rodent; the CDC does not suggest that ordinary contact with a dog or cat is itself the route of concern.
Rodent-proof food storage is a practical prevention measure, not a guarantee. Its purpose is to reduce wild rodents’ access to food, including pet food; it is not a tested treatment or a substitute for addressing possible entry points, food sources, and safe cleanup. The same prevention logic applies whether food is kept for people or for pets: reduce access to what could attract rodents, and avoid disturbing waste if rodents have been present.
Pet rodents require separate precautions
People who keep or work with live rodents can be exposed through bites or by touching saliva, urine, droppings, or bedding contaminated by an infected animal. This is why a pet rat is not covered by the reassuring U.S. guidance about dogs and cats. For new pet rats, the CDC suggests discussing testing with a veterinarian, especially before introducing them to other rats, and keeping wild rats away from pet rats. CDC pet-rodent guidance

The CDC says pet rodents are not recommended for households with children five years old or younger, pregnant people, or people with weakened immune systems, because these groups are at greater risk of serious illness. This is a precaution concerning pet rodents and household vulnerability; it is not a claim that a dog or cat poses the same hantavirus risk. CDC, May 13, 2024

For a household considering a pet rat, that means taking the decision and introductions seriously: ask a veterinarian about testing a new rat, particularly before it joins other rats, and prevent contact between pet rats and wild rats. CDC’s recommendation about households with young children, pregnant people, or people with weakened immune systems is specific to pet rodents. It should not be mistaken for a general warning that every pet presents the same exposure risk.
Does the answer change outside the United States?
The CDC’s statement that dogs and cats are not known to become infected is expressly framed for the United States. Hantaviruses and their rodent reservoirs vary by geography, so that U.S. statement should not be generalized to every virus, animal, or country. In the United States, deer mice are the most common source of the hantavirus that causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. CDC: About Hantavirus
The CDC identifies Andes virus, found in South America, as the only hantavirus known to spread from person to person. That is a person-to-person exception; it is not evidence that pets transmit hantavirus to people. CDC: About Andes Virus
Geography matters because “hantavirus” refers to a family of viruses associated with rodent reservoirs, rather than one identical virus with the same pattern everywhere. The U.S. guidance about dogs and cats is useful for the question it addresses, but should not be stretched into a claim about all animals or all locations. Likewise, the Andes virus exception concerns spread between people and does not change the distinction between a pet bringing a rodent home and a pet itself transmitting infection.

When to seek medical care
Hantavirus disease can be serious, and early illness may be nonspecific and resemble influenza. If illness follows possible rodent exposure, seek medical care promptly and tell the clinician about the exposure. The CDC advises seeing a physician immediately when hantavirus disease is suspected; a clinician can assess the person and decide what evaluation is needed. CDC: About Hantavirus
This is general public-health information, not a way to diagnose a person, a pet, or a rodent. A pet’s contact with a wild mouse does not by itself show that the rodent was infected or that a person contracted hantavirus. But if a person becomes ill after possible contact with rodents or their contaminated materials, the exposure history is important to share rather than relying on the pet’s appearance or behavior as reassurance.
