That is a general guide, not a fixed schedule for every pet: small dogs, cats and certain breeds may need cleanings more often. A veterinarian should tailor the interval to your pet’s oral health, age and risk factors. Routine awake oral exams are a separate part of care and may be appropriate every six months.
How often should a pet have a dental checkup or cleaning?
AAHA’s owner guidance, published February 22, 2024, gives an interval of every 1–2 years for professional dental cleanings for most pets. Some small dogs, cats and certain breeds may need them more frequently. There is no single schedule in that guidance for every breed, size or stage of dental disease, so your veterinarian should recommend an interval for your individual pet.

A checkup and a professional cleaning are not interchangeable. AAHA says oral health should be discussed at the first appointment and at every visit, and that a six-month awake oral-health exam is appropriate. A professional cleaning is a more involved veterinary procedure. Depending on what the veterinarian finds, it can include an anesthetized examination, dental radiographs, probing, cleaning above and below the gumline, polishing and, when needed, additional treatment such as extractions.

In practical terms, think of the awake exam as a recurring opportunity to screen and discuss your pet’s mouth, and the cleaning interval as a decision made from the pet’s findings and risk. Your veterinarian may recommend bringing the cleaning forward if an exam identifies a problem; do not wait for a routine interval if your pet develops concerning signs.

Why the interval is not the same for every dog or cat
AAHA identifies oral health, age and risk factors as considerations for setting the cleaning schedule. Small dogs, cats and certain breeds may need more frequent professional cleanings, but the guidance does not prescribe a separate interval for each group. Breed or size can be part of the conversation; neither is a substitute for examining the individual animal.
Findings matter because dental disease is not always visible when a pet opens its mouth. AAHA’s 2019 Dental Care Guidelines explain that clinically important disease or other abnormalities may be present even when teeth look grossly normal. A veterinarian’s recommendation can therefore depend on assessment that goes beyond what an owner can see at home.
AAHA’s 2024 owner guidance says that by age three, most dogs and cats already have some form of periodontal disease. AAHA presents this as an owner-facing statistic; its reviewed page does not give study-level provenance for the figure. It is a reason to take preventive dental care seriously, not a diagnosis of your pet or a rule that every animal needs a cleaning by a particular birthday.

An awake oral-health exam gives the veterinary team a chance to look in the mouth and discuss oral health. AAHA considers a six-month awake exam appropriate, in addition to discussing oral health during routine visits. These checks can help identify concerns that warrant closer evaluation, but they do not provide the same assessment as an anesthetized dental procedure when one is indicated.

The distinction matters because disease can be hidden below the gumline. A comprehensive assessment may involve periodontal probing and dental radiographs, which let the veterinary team assess areas that a visual look at the exposed tooth surface cannot establish. AAHA’s guidelines explain that comprehensive oral-health assessment involving radiography requires general anesthesia.
So a mouth that looks clean during an awake check is not necessarily a mouth that has been fully assessed. If your veterinarian recommends a professional procedure, ask what the examination and imaging are intended to evaluate and how the findings will shape treatment. The purpose is not simply to make visible teeth look better; it is to assess oral health and address problems the exam reveals.
What happens during a professional veterinary cleaning?
AAHA describes professional cleaning as a veterinary procedure performed under anesthesia. The exact plan depends on the examination findings, but its owner guidance describes several possible elements:
- Dental radiographs: imaging that can help assess disease and abnormalities not apparent from the visible tooth surface.
- Periodontal probing: assessment around the teeth and gums as part of a more complete oral examination.
- Scaling above and below the gumline: cleaning that is not limited to the exposed surfaces of the teeth.
- Polishing: a step included in AAHA’s overview of professional cleaning.
- Additional treatment: some pets may need treatment such as extractions, depending on what the veterinary team finds.
Not every pet will need the same treatment. The veterinarian uses the assessment to determine what is appropriate for that animal; the general interval does not guarantee that a cleaning will involve only scaling, or that all pets will need the same procedures. Ask the clinic to explain the proposed plan and how it may change if examination or radiographs reveal a problem.

Why anesthesia-free scaling is not equivalent
Scaling only the visible tooth surfaces is not the same as a comprehensive veterinary dental procedure. AAHA’s 2019 guidelines consider nonanesthetic dentistry inappropriate because it does not provide the diagnostic capabilities needed for periodontal probing, dental radiographs or treatment below the gumline. It can make teeth appear cleaner while disease in hidden areas remains unassessed.
AAHA also identifies patient stress and injury risk as concerns. A visible-only scaling cannot establish that the areas under the gums are healthy, and a better-looking surface should not be mistaken for a full dental assessment. AAHA Veterinary Content Specialist Emily Singler, VMD, has warned that nonanesthetic cleanings can create “a false sense of security” without making the mouth healthier.
If a cleaning is offered without anesthesia, ask whether the service includes a complete oral assessment, periodontal probing, dental radiographs and the ability to treat disease below the gumline. The limitation described by AAHA is that nonanesthetic scaling does not provide those capabilities; it should not be treated as an alternative equivalent to the veterinary care described above.
Signs that should prompt an exam sooner
Do not wait for the next planned check or cleaning if you notice signs of a possible oral-health problem. AAHA lists the following signs for pet owners to watch for:

Use the next appointment to get a pet-specific plan rather than choosing a fixed annual or biennial schedule on your own. AAHA’s guidance supports individualizing periodontal prevention and treatment over the pet’s lifetime. A focused conversation can clarify the distinction between the next awake check and any recommended professional procedure.
- Ask for an oral-health discussion. AAHA recommends discussing oral health at the first appointment and every visit. If your pet has not had an oral exam recently, ask the veterinary team to assess the mouth.
- Ask when the next awake exam is appropriate. AAHA says a six-month awake oral-health exam is appropriate. Have the clinic explain how that fits with your pet’s routine visits and individual needs.
- Ask what interval they recommend for professional cleaning. Use the general every-1–2-year interval as context, then ask how your pet’s oral findings, age, size, breed-related risk and other risk factors affect the recommendation.
- Clarify what the proposed procedure includes. Ask whether the plan involves anesthesia, radiographs, probing, cleaning above and below the gumline, polishing and possible additional treatment if findings warrant it.
- Ask what changes the timing. If the vet recommends a different interval than you expected, ask which findings or risks explain the timing and what signs should prompt an earlier appointment.
This approach keeps the schedule tied to the animal rather than treating a general interval as a calendar rule. It also helps distinguish a screening visit from a procedure intended to examine and treat oral disease more fully.

Does age alone mean a pet should avoid dental care?
No. AAHA’s guideline section says medically important procedures should be considered individually rather than discouraged solely because of chronologic age. The veterinary team should assess the animal’s health and anesthesia considerations when weighing an indicated procedure.

If age or anesthesia is a concern, discuss the pet’s overall health and the reason the procedure is being recommended with the veterinarian. The relevant decision is an individualized assessment of the animal and the proposed care—not an automatic yes or no based on age alone.
What you can do between veterinary visits
AAHA recommends daily toothbrushing to help reduce plaque accumulation. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush made for pets and pet-specific toothpaste; do not use human toothpaste. If your pet will not tolerate brushing, ask the veterinarian about a gradual approach or other suitable additions to the home-care routine.
AAHA also suggests discussing dental chews, water additives and dental diets with the veterinary team. For chews, it recommends looking for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal. Suitability depends on the individual dog or cat, so ask the veterinarian which products may fit your pet.
Home care supports the plan between appointments; it does not replace veterinary evaluation or treatment when needed. Brushing and other products address at-home care, while an examination can identify concerns and determine whether a professional procedure is indicated.
