Can Pit Bulls Eat Tuna? Safety, Risks, and What to Do

Tuna isn’t a recommended regular treat for pit bulls. Mercury is the central concern, and canned and raw tuna bring additional risks. Here’s what to do if your dog has already eaten some.

It’s best not to feed tuna to a pit bull as a regular or intentional treat. Tuna can contain mercury, and canned or raw varieties have additional concerns. The American Kennel Club’s tuna-specific advice recommends avoiding it, although a broader AKC guide says a little plain tuna canned in water may be acceptable occasionally. Neither source identifies a pit-bull-specific exception, so ask your veterinarian about your dog’s circumstances rather than relying on a general serving size.

Why tuna raises concerns for dogs

Mercury can build up in tuna

The main concern is mercury. Tuna is a longer-lived fish, and heavy metals can accumulate in fish over time. The AKC’s guidance on feeding tuna to dogs advises against it for this reason; its broader fish guidance favors shorter-lived species over tuna and swordfish.

Canned and raw tuna have other drawbacks

Canning does not remove the mercury concern, and some canned tuna contains added salt or preservatives. Raw tuna can carry parasites or bacteria. The AKC recommends serving fish fully cooked, without bones, oils, or seasonings.

What the AKC guidance says about occasional tuna

The AKC’s tuna-specific article advises against feeding tuna to dogs. Its broader human-food guide is more permissive: it says a little canned tuna in water without spices may be acceptable occasionally, while also cautioning about mercury and sodium. These recommendations differ in tone, and neither establishes a safe serving size. If you are considering giving tuna, ask your veterinarian, particularly if your dog has a health condition or you plan to offer it repeatedly.

The guidance addresses dogs generally, not pit bulls specifically. There is no pit-bull-specific tuna rule in these sources; the same mercury and preparation concerns apply.

If your pit bull already ate tuna

A tiny accidental taste is different from regular feeding. The AKC says a small amount taken from a plate is unlikely to cause mercury poisoning, but advises monitoring your dog and contacting a veterinarian promptly if concerning signs develop. The source does not provide a dose-based risk estimate for an individual dog.

  • Seek veterinary care immediately if symptoms such as tremors, loss of coordination, vomiting blood, or watery or bloody diarrhea occur.
  • Do not use an unrelated salt-toxicity threshold to estimate how much tuna is safe.

Choosing fish treats instead

If you want to offer fish, the AKC recommends choosing shorter-lived species, which are generally less likely than tuna or swordfish to accumulate heavy metals. Examples it names include salmon, whitefish, herring, flounder, and Arctic char. Serve fish fully cooked, plain, and free of bones.

Fish as an occasional treat is different from using it to make a complete homemade diet. If you are planning a fish-based homemade diet, consult a veterinarian or board-certified veterinary nutritionist.
